I love the line "You didn't save me. You didn't think I needed saving." So many songs are about a guy saving a girl, or overlooking her flaws. I don't want a guy who thinks I need saving, or to change to be worthy of love. I want someone like in this song, who sees me, flaws and all, and loves me as I am.

This song, to me, is about two broken, traumatized people healing each other. They both recognize each other’s trauma and accept it as part of who they are. My girlfriend and I are both traumatized in different ways. Mine was emotional and psychological. Her’s was both of those, and physical. I truly believe that two broken people can heal each other. They accept each other’s trauma with empathy and understanding. Whenever each of us has a moment, empathy floods the other and we embrace to let each other know that we feel each other’s pain, and the other’s tear drops stain our individual cheeks. We let each other know that’s it’s safe to still feel from the trauma and that there is someone that loves and cares for you to give you a safe place to grieve and still have feelings from the past, without feeling threatened or hurt. Trauma never fully heals. Having someone in your life that loves and cares about you with kindness and empathy helps you to carry on with your life and still allow the trauma to be expressed in a healthy manner that is met with love.

I stumbled onto this song driving a 28' rented truck, driving through the Indian Reservation just over the CO southern border, fleeing the Oregon Holiday Farm fire. Smoke was literally coming off my jacket. It burned out my community, but my home stood. I really tried to power through, but it was just too heartbreaking to drive an hour each way through the burned-out pass to the nearest standing town just for groceries when all my friends had fled. For me it wasn't a love song. It was a survival anthem. There were so many who lost everything. So many that it wasn't appropriate to mention my losses. We were all totally on our own with our completely different responses to the same tragedy. So it was completely inappropriate for me to lean on anyone except myself. In hindsight I made the wrong decision in moving back to TX. I no longer had the will or drive to try to fit in here. I've half ass tried to conform, but it's not happening. But after 2.5 years of "trying" and being so devastated by the ceaseless MAGA anger in deep rural TX, I've started preparing for a real adventure. I'm off to Thailand. Texas DID try to change me.

How many voices today don’t need all the electronic magic? Here’s one. It is rare to feel that textured combination of smooth and harsh. Most female voices , even at her level , can’t do both with the magic this girl has. She steps back and forth across that line with such ease that it is absolutely spooky. Without doubt Maren is holding aces she is yet to play. Have not heard anyone sell that level of contempt and conviction in a song since the very early days of Mr Cash.
I wish this song was as big as "The Bones." This was a decent follow-up.
