- We are nearing the end, and it is very clear in this one. It was nice to spend a big portion of the episode with the people we've come to know, where they at least weren't in constant danger, and we got a lot of great interactions and new perspectives. Two more to go!
Remember this is not a substitute for watching the actual show. If you haven't seen it, please do so (available on HBO Max) and then come back to the video afterwards.

Webster was an English Lit major at Harvard who left school to enlist -- also bypassing a chance for his wealthy family to "buy" him a commision as an officer. He journaled a lot during the war; in fact, a lot of his writings helped inform Stephen Ambrose's book on which the series is based, and he's a much bigger character in the book than in the series.
Don’t give away any info from after the war.
Dont spoil it
Spoiler guys, Germany loses the war.
@@captaint5739 HAHAHAHA!!!
@@captaint5739 Germany lost. Fascism won.
The short scene of the men laughing taking cover in the cellar I feel is such an overlooked masterclass of character development; These men had just endured some of the worst shelling they’d experienced all war, in Bastogne, where they had nothing but holes in the ground for cover - now they are cozy in a cellar, which causes them to burst out laughing at the [relative] safety of their situation given the Hell they endured not long before.
It's all relative right? Well said.
Kris Frederick - As Major Dick Winters said in the beginning, “There was this feeling that the war was easing off...”
That was an incredibly insightful breakdown of the scene! Well said.
Adam Borseti - That’s why I love cinematography; That long message was conveyed in a clip no more than a few seconds long
Adam Borseti - thank you
Some of my favourite little details about this episode:
- Scary Badass Speirs sort of forcefully mama-bearing resident Mama Bear Lipton who is sick and not very good at feeling useless and being looked after for a change -- something that actually happened, too.
- The relieved but tense hush that falls when Doc Roe finally arrives onto the scene. You see that a lot throughout the series but this one was one of the most memorable instances, even if there was nothing he could do in the end.
- The spark of realization and respect in Lt. Jones's eyes when he realizes what Winters is doing. Kudos to Colin Hanks for selling through a subtle expression that this was a massive learning moment for his character about leadership.
I always liked that Lt., usually these guys that are career officers and on track for a role away from combat and take that one tour to see a fight, are portrait as nearly braindead idiots that get soldiers killed.
Jones was inexperienced, but he wasn't stupid and adapted to the situation. With more experience he might have turned into a solid commander.
The reason Lieutenant Henry Jones was promoted so quickly, as well as why he was being moved to Regimental Staff, was because he graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point. The army at that point was mostly draftees, men who would not be retained in the army after the war, and thus the US Army was trying to fill important posts with "regular army" soldiers -- that is, those who joined voluntarily rather than those who were involuntarily drafted. The army had big plans for a bright young officer like Jones.
Unfortunately, a few years after the events depicted in this episode, he was killed in a car accident in Germany at the age of 23.
Many of the elite soldiers esp the airborne paratroopers of 101st and 82nd during WWII were volunteers.
Remember they are in front line, they have deficit number of man and officers, even supply are limited
every man count, and West Point officer is natural for HQ.
Jones was killed when his jeep hit a land mine in Germany during the occupation.
He was part of the "West Point Protective Association"
Webster was rich, very rich, His mom tried to pay for him to have a cushy rear echelon position as an officer or something but he refused and chose instead to be a private on the front lines, he also chose to be as passive as possible, rarely volunteering to do things and never accepting a promotion beyond Sargent... which didn't stick. He did this all with the intent to write a first hand account after the war of a front line soildier.
Unfortunately, his not volunteering for things gained him the reputation you saw here when they said “he tries to get out of everything.”
He sounds so good when you hear how he chastised his mother for trying to get him a cushy position and enlisted, but then knowing he avoided all he could with the hopes of writing a book afterwards that I’m sure the goal was to be a best-seller to make him a ton of money (relative to that time period, of course, and I know he was already rich, but still). I don’t know how decent a guy he actually was, but he does sound a bit like a dick when you think about it.
@@charlesedwards2856 that didn't actually happen in real life. His memoir mentions none of that and I actually got the chance to ask a writer for the show in a q and a on twitter and he confirmed it didn't actually happen like that to Webster, but it did happen to others who came back to units after a stretch so that's why it's in the series.
I have to second another comment here:
Have tissues handy when you watch episode 9.
Have no worries. I'm watching this in my bedroom so I have plenty of tissues handy.
@@bakersmileyface Nudge nudge wink wink... ;)
They've already finished the series and posted the videos on Patreon.
@@Radwar99 Ah, well, can't blame me for trying!
Well-said!
When the boat flipped over into the cold water you both got so tense.
"Shhhhhhhhhhhhh"
It just shows how invested this show you guys are. Every episode is powerful and thought provoking.
Enjoying your reactions. Thanks.
They were even whispering as if they were there and exercising noise discipline 😂
What no one ever notices is the guy that flips the line over their heads and says I can't swim. Is the same guy that makes fun of the replacements for wearing the D-Day medal, refuses to go look for Bull and pokes at Webster for standing in line for the shower.
The story I heard was that after the first patrol, another colonel friend of Sink's visited him and they started drinking. They got into a bit of a brag-off about their respective regiments accomplishments and Sink kept hyping up his prisoner grab, then he suddenly turned to Winters and ordered the 2nd one. Winters waited until he was sure Sink was drunk enough to be fast asleep that night and then did it his way.
I don't know how to say this without sounding condescending and I really hope you take it as the compliment I intend: your English is fantastic. Your vocabulary and the way you really seem to be deliberating about exactly what you want to say is great and makes your commentary that much more enjoyable and interesting to listen to. Thanks for being such attentive viewers!
How could this ever be condescending?
Thank you ♥️
@@KatSonny If I may be so bold to speak to the OPs comment. Most likely because there's a certain group of people in America that any type of compliment to non native speakers about their English is somehow racist/problematic. Considering you speak better English than most Americans, it is definitely a compliment.
When Major Winters got the oak leaves, it was the first time Nixon had to salute him.
The more I learn about Webster, the more I like him. He really reminds me so much of myself, and he was an excellent writer as well, so you can really learn a lot about him from reading his work
My dad and I have a theory as to why Colin Hanks played the new officer. They wanted someone whom the other actors would not respect, so they used the producer's son.
Actually the might be something in that. I listened to a history podcast recently where they interviewed the cast , show makers , relatives etc. And everyone had to go through boot camp before they even started filming. Except for maybe the replacement's etc and they used to haze the newbies etc like real soldiers as well so
Makes sense. There's also a resemblance between the real Lt. and Colin Hanks when you see a picture side by side.
When Jackson died in the basement, the chaos of that scene, then the silence after he died..... faint shelling in the background.... dust falling from the cieling as a reminder that the war is still going on..... such a powerful scene.
I know I love that scene, the utter silence as everyone gazed to his body, so heartbreaking because Webster’s actor who voiced-over afterwards, said that in real life, he died in the basement with his soldiers looking on to him in shock, bless poor Eugene Jackson
The emotional price these guys paid is almost unbearable .... i love this show cause it is all about the emotional aspect of the war.
I believe Winters was one of the few if not the only one promoted Major on the field.
Once again, I love your reactions to this series and your honest commentary. You two seem to really get the deeper meaning of the series rather than just the action and the history. You understand the psychology of combat soldiers to a certain degree, no civilian can truly understand unless they have experienced it first hand, but you two seem to get it as well as any civilian can.
I remember the end of my first deployment to Iraq as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps. you get this feeling that your so close to getting on that plane and heading out of the war zone or back home where your safe. As an officer I didn't want to make any mistakes that could lead to my guys not being on that plane, but at the same time you gotta guard against your guys becoming complacent and making mistakes that could threaten their lives or the mission. Its a weird feeling at the end like Major Winters says you have this feeling, It hard to explain i guess the closest I can explain is its like watching a sports game and the score is really close and the there is just one minute left on the clock and your team just has to maintain the lead for 60 seconds and you win but x 100.
Once again love your reaction to this series hope your able to react to the sister series to Band of Brother, the Pacific it tells the story of the US Marine Corps. in the Pacific theater. P.S. the next episode is extremely good yet extremely disturbing.
❤️
Thank you for your service!
@@KatSonny Your welcome, and thank you for your respect and appreciation.
after episode 10 there's a documentary called "We Stand Alone Together" they talk with the real men who are portrayed in the series. trust me you will really enjoy hearing from those men. i hope you will watch/react to this as well.
I believe Sonny will be reacting to that video with his father.
This series is much easier to follow the individuals because it is from one book
The Pacific is from several books, so a little more dispersed when it comes to the characters. It is also much more violent - they are on Islands and the Japanese will fight to the death and there is no way off except for winning or, essentially, dying
Very intense series
The fact that the Pacific is split between 3 different stories hinders that series a bit. It should have been 12-14 episodes.
Hell, Guadalcanal could have been the whole series on it's own. A lot of the desperation, and isolation the Marines felt is lost because of the pacing.
I freaking love The Pacific. The dispersed nature of that series mirrors the nature of the actual Pacific campaign -- chaos, lack of cohesion, and utter insanity.
Tied with Lonesome Dove (which y’all should check out) Band of Brothers is the best miniseries/movie of all time.
100 percent agree. Gotta love Augustus McCrae and Lorrie darlin'
After Band of Brothers, react to The Pacific, another great show
@Tales Figueiredo I totally agree but maybe in a bit for them? I grew up with 2 grandpas in the Pacific Theater (Navy and Marine). I don't want them to keep cringing, unless they're game I mean.
Battle Brothers can come back... this is something civilians should avoid.
@@EthanBSide not sure what you mean by “Battle Brothers,” but coming from a military family background this is definitely something “civilians” should definitely NOT avoid.
It's a good thing that you were whispering at 6:39, Sonny - the Germans might have heard you! 🤫
There is a moment, in this episode that I really enjoy. It's the quiet moment, where each man is going about his routine...just mentally preparing himself for what he's going to have to do. Some men, clean their weapons...other men, do slight tweaks to their weapons..such as Jackson, whom used his lighter to darken the front sight of his rifle...thus giving it more contrast, and easier for his eye to pick up....while others, prefer to sit quietly with their thoughts. Band Of Brothers, is a great mini-series...and I hope you guys enjoy these last episodes..they're some of my favorites.
I am a Vietnam combat veteran I have really enjoyed your study and comments about this movie . Thinking about it I have come to realize that you both are a lot like me
You two and I know what others don't . Thank you and God bless you both
Webster at the beginning of the episode was trying to find his place both literally and figuratively. It was a well-written approach to the episode.
The next episode will be the hardest emotionally to deal with.
Definitely
Consider this your warning. Have tissues ready.
Still gets me upset. It was one of the "best" depictions I can think of in cinema.
Dirus Maybe Schindler's List.
FreemanicParacusia Shhhhh shhh don’t spoil it
One aspect about this episode many people miss or don’t understand is that the Germans had a huge rail gun here and just after Easy company leaves the safe building they were in that rail gun fired a massive shell that hit that building completely destroying it and causing many casualties to the unit that had replaced easy. You can see it in the background as the episode ends...the building that explodes.
At the end of the episode in just a fraction of a second, when the men are leaving, Cobb sits in the rear of a jeep with military police. He got arrested after being drunk and got court martialed and got a dishounerable decharge and send home. In reality Webster actually received a warm welcome. His friends were happy he had missed the horrors of Bastogne. but for dramatic purpose this was changed in this episode
In Don Malarkey's book, his biggest criticism of the book/series was the high profile of Webster, which he thought was unwarranted. He had little respect for him.
I believe, from reading the book that Sink got drunk and was boasting how well the patrol went that he gave an order for another patrol whilst drunk. Winters, who didnt like alcohol was disgusted and didnt allow it to happen.
Of the 10 episodes this is the most “Hollywood-ized”.
1-Webster was in the hospital from September to January because his wounds were more serious than was depicted.
2-Webster was immediately welcomed back into the unit. He didn’t receive any hostility.
3-When Popeye left the hospital the unit was still in England and that’s where he joined them. Same with Guannere. For Webster to have joined them he would’ve had to have escaped from his hospital in England, found a way to the coast, snuck onto a boat for France, found his way across France and the Netherlands to Belgium, fought through enemy lines encircling Bastogne and then find out where the unit was. There is no way he could’ve done all that.
4- Webster didn’t go on the patrol. He was one of the ones on the machine guns giving them covering fire.
5-From watching the episode it would appear that Jones was there a day or two. He was actually there for a few months.
How does this show get me in the feels even after so many years and countless re-watchings?
In a reflection of the situation his character faces, Colin Hanks was met with some indifference by the existing cast members who suspected that nepotism got him the role, that's why he was chosen.
you guys need to react to the show “the pacific” after you finish this. it is the same directors and same type of show but based off of what happened at this same time but in the pacific!! it’s really good!!!!
Sonny said on twitch that he'll be doing The Pacific with his dad
I hope they do Generation Kill as well. Also a HBO show about the American invasion of Iraq. It's soo good.
@@samgoldstein1993 Nice, they said they would not do the pacific. so this is great news :)
Generation War (German: Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter, translated as "Our Mothers, our Fathers") should be on their list too. WW2 from the German perspective, follows 5 friends over the course of the war.
Awesome, I always enjoy your level of respect and colorful comments through my favorite series of all time.
I liked Kat's reaction at the end when Liebgott put his hand out to help Webster up onto the truck.
I feel these soldiers were horribly misled by joining "Easy" Company. Worst play on words ever.
To be fair, they only joined the airborne. They got assigned to “Easy” Company.
"Easy" is just a phonetic call-sign for "E". They are the 506th Parachute Regiment's, 2nd Battalion's, E Company.
Call-signs for other Companies would be Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog, Fox, How, and so on.
@@Marshall_Thompson The OP was just having a fun play on words, Marshall.
@@Marshall_Thompson And obviously I know that, Baker company didn't make pies.
@@AngeloBarovierSD Thank you sir
The funny thing about being ready at a moment’s notice, I see, is remembering your weapon.
It’s gallows humor. You can see great examples of “you might be a veteran”. Black Rifle Coffee
Black Rifle Coffee.
Also VetTV.
Well. If you are easily offended don't watch VetTV.
I've only seen their RUclips channel. Boy is it crass and dark. It's a different generation.
the next episode for me has the deepest impact on me as a high schooler when i first saw this series ... upto today i still see this as one of the best moment of any ww2.
Colonel Sink wanted another successful mission. Many believed that Sink simply wanted to puff his feathers.
WInters out right defied orders. That could have ended his career. Also Nixon for the false report. He made the right call. The Germans just had a fire fight on their side of the river with some captured men. They wold be watching that sector.
The vehicle that was giving fire support for the mission is an M16 multiple gun motor carriage. Built by the White Motor Company. Based on the M3 half track chassis, used for several different rolls. Scout car, transport, anti aircraft, anti tank, and a few others. The M16 was an anti aircraft variant, four .50 caliber machine guns. 2,877 were made. That is out of the over 50,000 total off all variants of the M3 chassis. However the M16 was seldom used in the anti aircraft roll. The U.S. Army Air Corps was doing that just fine. Instead the M16 was often used to add massive fire power for the infantry.
The Chieftain has a nice video on the vehicle. He has a great channel check him out if you want to know about tanks.

As the company was leaving there is an explosion in the back ground. The building is were the company was staying.
the building that exploded was the enemy building across the river that they raided, you see them hide a timed charge behind a shelf before leaving, in the conversation minutes before you see it blow , they even mention the timed charges should go up any minute..
Tom Hanks made a cameo in this too. He was the screaming German across the river
Extremely late but scrolling through the comments I didn't see this, so I thought I'd mention it. In the book Beyond Band of Brothers, Winters wrote that Jackson was actually screaming for someone to shoot him because of the agony he was in after being wounded. Not sure why the show changed it to I don't want to die
I watched all your reactions to this epic mini series. You guys are awesome, and have GREAT respect for the time and what was going on.
Hey guys, there's a documentary of all the interviews with the men of Easy company which was originally part of the series run. It's really worth watching
I had the feeling that Private Cobb fell into the river on purpose - that he didn't want to do the mission. Overall, I did not think that the series portrayed him as a soldier I would want to have to rely on in combat. wikiofbrothers.fandom.com/wiki/Private_Roy_W._Cobb
Cobb was court-martial for the drunk and disorderly incident. If you look real closely at the end of this episode, as all of the soldiers are leaving in trucks, you can see Cobb leaving in a jeep with 2 MPs. Nice attention to detail by the producers. Blink and you'll miss it.
Tom Hanks is also in the episode. He’s the one screaming on the River for help towards the end of the episode
Yep, it's definitely Nixon aka "Nix" who is Winter's right hand man of sorts, good friend, and the intelligence officer of Easy Company.
"No helmets" more likely to take shrapnel to the skull or a bullet at a very long angle if I remember from Saving Private Ryan beginning scene.
Sad fact about Captain Sobel:
For an unknown reason, in the late 1960s, Sobel tried to commit suicide by shooting himself through his temple, but the shot only severed his optic nerves, blinding him for life. He was later moved to a VA assisted-living home, and resided there for 17 years, before dying of malnutrition and neglect in 1987. No funeral was held.
He was a bitter man. He had a wife and daughter, from what I've read they did not love him. No one should die alone like he did. Just no one.
Sgt Martin is played by Dexter Fletcher who directed Rocketman (the Elton John biopic) and finished Bohemian Rhapsody after Bryan Singer was fired.
I love the Hi-Def setup. Especially the picture in picture hi res.
Good reaction. In real life Winters was promoted to Major before they was in this town and also that argument between Cobb an Martin was actually physical altercation.
Well done as always ! Hang in there. A book you might like, "If You Survive", goes into some of these kinds of patrols in detail and the importance of getting fresh prisoners to get local intel.
Sonny has way better facial hair.... but Kat is definitely great and a lot like my history. That's why America is grean and kinda crazy. Love you guys.
if Kat is a Biologis? Is she?I spent a stupid amount to learn neolby

@@KatSonny 1) Sorry, I was clearly drunk last night 2) You won't believe me, but I studied for Neuro/Psychopharmacology. I was (and am still) fascinated by consciousness and experience. Still love you guys.
Buckle yourselfs in guys, ep 9 is upon you 😢
Yipppeeeee I've been waiting for this one, thanks for upload guys... you're awesome!!
You guys arent ready for the Pacific 😭😭😭 cant wait!
Did you know The Colonel is actually a Retire Captain in the military and he is a Counselor for military movie like he did in Saving private Ryan and this tv series.
I went to summer camp with Colin Hanks. Cool dude. Kind of quiet.
Webster had been injured during an artillery barrage during Ep. 5, "Crossroads." ("They got me! Can you believe I said that?")
Love your reactions, keep it up!
He actually complained about how cliche a thing to say "they got me" was in his memoir
Another way too late addition to this comment section (since I didn't see anyone mention it) is that Pvt. Roy Cobb (the drunk jerk character) ended up being brought to trial under court-martial for his drunken assault of the officer that lead the prisoner grab mission and was dishonorably discharged for his actions.
I have really really enjoyed these reactions to one of my favorite films/series. Especially looking forward to your reaction to the final 2 episodes. Well done.
Its sister series The Pacific (HBO too), is worthy of watching. Spielberg, Hanks, even Ambrose's son was involved. A little different, it follows 3 key people with great episode stories on other soldiers throughout.
Prepare for tears in episode 9.
Tom Hanks makes a cameo in episode 9, also. Plays a French soldier with a pistol ;-)
Yeah; those French soldiers were in no mood to F-ck around.
The best episode in TV history.
Where
@@jian5568 As the company is riding in the trucks... O'Keefe's first view of 'action'.
He was also the voice of the soldier calling for help across the river.........fun fact
In the American Army if it ain't expressly forbidden anything you can get away with goes. In most other Armies if it isn't expressly authorized then "Alles Verboten". The Australians are a lot like Americans in this respect. I retired from the American Army and in my early years I was a pretty good scrounger. We had no supplies under Carter, like every democrat, so you had to get what you needed where you could find it. Hell, we didn't get paid for over three months, ran out of food in the messhall so we didn't get fed for over a month. We had to have our parents wire us money so we could eat.
The Lt Jones played by Hanks was killed about a year after this in a car accident
Once you've finished the series, make sure you watch the behind the scenes documentary, or Nixons video diary. What they did behind the scenes was as amazing as what they did on screen.
It’s a hard watch, but rewarding. Thanks for covering it.
Winter's didn't feel like it was worth it to risk soldier's lives just so the colonel had something to brag about. Winter's is the best CO ever.
Did you recognize Michael Fassbender on 4:36?
Now it's confirmed Professor X and Magneto were in easy company

Before his death, Webster wrote quit good book about paratrooper infantry.
Excellent reaction and comments from both of you. Looking forward, and also dreading, the last two episodes. Not ready for the series to be over.
Just realized that the young dude is Tom Hanks son...no wonder I saw facial similarities.
You skipped over it in the video but I figured I should mention this. The wounded German they left behind that you hear screaming later is voiced by Tom Hanks in that scene. You can actually tell its him if you listen close enough.
It was awesome guys! Thanks for your reactions, keep watching please :)
I’m curious how your English is so good, both of you. Is it mandatory in Denmark to learn English in school? I’m Canadian and I can hardly detect your accents.
Thank you! 😊 Yes it is mandatory, kids here start learning English in first grade.
You both look gorgeous in this one.
Yall such a beautiful couple.
Fair warning. Episode 9 will leave you in tears. Or make you not feel well.

The next episode will be a tough one to watch, probably the toughest.

Check out Webster and his life - short - after the war.
Great reaction guys.Been following. Hope Kat's creek in the neck is better. :)
You guys should check out The Pacific next. Basically Band of Brothers for Marines in the Pacific theater.
Get ready, the episode 9 will made you cry a lot. So have your handkerchief ready
I hope you guys watching The Pacific ! So good as Band of Brothers
You will not be ready for Episode 9...
I hope both of you will be ready for next episode......it is hard one to deal with.......
Get those tissues at the ready. Episodes 9 is the roughest episode of the series. No joke you'll both need it.
After seeing your reactions to this and Dark can I recommend "Generation War" to you? It's a pretty good german mini series. Showing the life of five friends during the second world war. Or alternatively "Babylon Berlin" which should be on Netfllix. A neo-noir crime drama set in 1920's germany. The most expensive german show ever made. There's also some overlap in actors between these shows, which is fun.
Also, please watch, and react to “we stand alone together” the full documentary from the veterans story.
On to Episode 9. Hope you have some strong spirits handy; you'll probably need it afterwards.
Great job as always next two episodes are a great finale to this series.
Next episode is a hard one. And the one after that is bittersweet.
next episode is going to be brutal tissues will be needed
Will you do a video of the Special Features? Particularly the interview with Richard Winters.
Every time I watch it, I cry. Hope you two will do an extra video on it ^-^
After completing the series you must watch Band of Brothers Documentary 'We Stand Alone Together'.
