Improve 7 Segment LED Display With Simple Trick

- Ever wondered, how to make 7 segment LED display more readable? Here is a simple trick that I like to use.
If there is a chance that the display will be used in sunlight, I think it would be better to use lighter tint.
Window tint/film can be bough quite cheaply, but for this application you may even be able to get it for free. If you know someone who tints car windows, ask for scrap film pieces.

Thanks a million, been trying to solve this for ages.
Congrats on making Hackaday!
Thanks!
Nice, I use photography gels but this is an idea I haven't thought of before.
Hackaday sent me. Nice trick.
Thanks!
Nice to see you back - and a good trick!
Thanks! Took some time off while I was moving and doing other things. Now I'll be able to concentrate more on electronics and at the same time make videos more frequently.
cool trick !! love your videos, always to the point. i remember seeing an epoxy/color mix in some projects. yours is obviously way cleaner solution
Thank you! This is indeed very clean solution. If trimming the excess is done precisely, it will look like the film is part of the display. And if one doesn't like the results, the film can be taken off in a second.
great!
great
Are there any easily obtainable alternatives to this? Thanks.
Nice video, but could someone explain *why* this happens? It would appear that the unlit segments are reflecting ambient light and the tint reduces that a lot, but I would expect the lit segments to also get noticeable dark (which doesn't seem to happen).
Thanks! Actually they are initially very, very bright and they do get darker. It's just that they were originally so bright, that at 5% brightness (which this film passes through), they are still very visible in bright light.
@@Hackvlog Ooh cool, thanks a lot!
If you need extra brightness, you can use a film that's the same color as your LEDs, so more of that light gets through. Might be necessary if your display is dimmer due to multiplexing or whatever.
Wow, big difference...
Definitely worth trying! From barely usable to great looking display.
Wow, this looks OLED.
Exactly! Really dark background and vivid colors. Much better than without any filter or with the usual red filter that some like to use.
i use Masking tape
blue or red electrical tape does the job too...
