So the attack was relentless. No other country had that. They were mostly in 2s. On a side note, Gavaskar ordered / had custom made special equipment which included: Pads(you wont find those curved pads on any other player at that time), Gloves, His skullcap during later years (that was supposed to never protect anyone as per experts), Bat, Etc.

I have seen this man playing (on TV of course) in my young days. I am fully convinced that he should not be compared with anyone else - not even Sachin. A perfect batsman who had the ability to play all kinds of cricketing shots with perfection, but he had to control himself because he did not have the kind of back up like Dravid, Saurabh, Laxman ... so he never had the luxury to play risky shots. This continued throughout his career - see his last innings when was out at 96 on an underprepared wicket and immediately India lost the game. Gavaskar is Gavaskar - that's it.

Comparisons might be difficult. Playing conditions were different. Safety considerations just started becoming important by mid 80s. And major part of Gavaskar's career was before that, when fearsome west indies pace bowlers were at their best. Who can forget the blood bath of Sabina Park test in Kingston, Jamaica in 1976. Other countries also had great pacemen and often they attacked the batsmen without mercy. All things considered we have to accept that batsmen are having much easier time now than before 80s. Same thing about indian bowling. When there was hardly any pace attack, Kapildev took on the burden on, thanklessly bowling for days on dull indian pitches in hot humid weather.(Probably same applies to Pakistani pace bowlers, but at least they were able get more breaks than Kapil, as they have more fast bowlers). Gavaskar infused previously lacking core strength and solidity in to the team. And Kapil Dev took it to a different level and gave the nation world conquering confidence. If cricket reached the current position of glory in india, the path to glory was laid by Kapildev and Gavaskar, without doubt well assisted by other great players of the time.

The best opener in the test cricket is Sunil Gavaskar, I have been observing and watching his batting right from 1971. He is a copy book, he knows to respect the best ball and treat bad balls accordingly.

I grew up in the Sunil Gavaskar era. Those days, we used to say that the Indian team had 2.5 batsmen: Gavaskar, Vishwanath, and the rest of the team was half a batsman. Of course, this wasn't true when Dilip Sardesai, Mohinder Amarnath, or Dilip Vengsarkar were in the team. Every time Gavaskar got out, the commentators used to talk about how many runs India needed to avoid follow on and whether the great Vishy was in good enough form to make them.
There is no need to compare . But if at all anyone wants to compare there is no doubt that the man who batted without helmet against the most ferocious fast bowlers and tantalizing spinners is heads and shoulders above any other Indian or world batsman except perhaps Bradman

Gavaskar played when bowling attack was at its best , yet he succeeded remarkably . It was also a time when indian players had no fast bowling practice in domestic cricket ; that's why Gavaskar is great to me.
Before Gavaskar there was no technical batsman from India who had such a huge impact and also garnered appreciation from fellow competitors. He laid the foundation then Sachin came now Kohli is taking it forward, every era has it's own heros. And about his controversial comments well he is kind of old 70+ and from a different time (I have a father too he is 77 now, I have to hear all his stories about crocodiles chasing him while going to school 😂) give him a break✌🏻
Without helmet Gavaskar played his cricket against terrified bowling attack of WI during his first test series. When other countries failed, he scored his 13 centuries against WI in their country. Pure class. Sachin also targeted by each and every bowler, but Sachin scored number of centuries during his time which is a difficult task. Both are legendary cricketers of their times. Proud that they represent India.

Gavaskar - Probably technically most correct batsman of all time. Solid defense. Incredible sense of off - stump. But he never considered as a dominating batsman. He was excellent in test cricket. Dravid used to play like him. Sachin is beyond comparison A complete package of defense attack and elegance. Sachin may be considered as perfect blending of Sunny Sehwag and VVS
Gavaskar pioneered fearlessness which others followed. Even Richards considers him the best batsman he has seen. That is enough for me to respect Sunny. This does not take away anything from other greats.
@diffbreak2366 Majority of cricketing brains, fans and legendry players have always rated Sachin above all. Sachin - the perfect model batsman and rare combination of defense, aggression and elegance. No disrespect for Sunny or any others but they are behind Sachin.

Sunil Manohar Gavaskar was the Best opening batsman India had ever produced. He had the complete package . His batting technic was immaculate, Total copy book.. He played the game with passion and Love for his country. Kerry Packer of Australia offered big Sums to join his World Series matches , which were parallel to ICC.. But he refused to join , because he would be banned by the ICC. He refused that offer to represent India. That was the degree of Love and dedication he had. Gavaskar went on the tour of West Indies , when his wife was pregnant. He scored a century on the day the couple was blessed with their son Rohan. He did not stay back to be with his wife , which we often see these days. He wanted to be there representing India. He knew his presence is absolutely required , because India had very few good batsman in those days. There are very few who can match him. Bharat is truly blessed , ..
A complete batsman rather batter. Never flinched against fast bowling and was very comfortable against all quality spinners. His last test innings was a masterclass on a minefield of a track. His average overseas is higher than the one at home which speaks volumes of his talent and supremacy. Please do keep in mind that those days home umpires were officiating. Against all odds, he scored so many runs. Moreover, he has to face the brunt of green tracks since India never had any quick bowlers. Probably with modern bats & kits & docile pitches, Mr. Gavaskar would have scored another 3 to 4 thousand runs more. Above all, the pressure was more on him than all the modern day super stars of India because once Gavaskar & Vishy gets out, innings will get folded quickly. No modern facilities were there to hone skills which is there at present. Gavaskar - the ultimate god of Indian Cricket. Period.
For people who understand cricket, he is one of the best commentators. Astute, unbiased, technical, and to the point. Unfortunately, passionate Indian cricket lovers don't take any critical comments too well. One way to improve is to take criticism positively.
Sachin stays the bench mark, whenever lara, virat, dravid etc fans try to showcase their fav players greatness.why cant they do it without mentioning sachin? that sums up the whole scenerio.
No helmet, no protective pads but Gavaskar faced lethal bowlers like Malcolm Marshall, Andy Roberts, Lilly, Jeff Thomson like bowlers as openers and created history.
All said and done, Gavasker was definitely greater player than anyone else, especially when he didn't have helmet, elbow guard, and other safety equipment against mightiest of fast bowlers to play with.

@@Petrichoredit there comes one idiot....kid, If players like Gavaskar or Tendulkar played the same level of amateur bowling that Kohli played, they would have scored 50000 + runs
@@SuperSubhankar007 hmm so much immature moron, that time bowlers getting extra speed swing by pich and bowl, so much dangerous bowling that's why player like (bowlers) Anil kumble has a century, Wasim akram has a century...
See he and Sir Viv are hero of Sachin Tendulkar . And in-fact he faced mighty West indies and Pakistani balling line-up . even Imran Khan admire his batting skills .
And we had Sachin because we had 1983 title under lead by example from Kapil Dev and fabulous era by Sunil Gavaskar. 10,000+ runs was not a joke in that era.
Gavaskar faced the Worlds Best Fast Bowling.Till today many legends considering Gavaskar as the greatest Indian Batter.Tendulkar till his carrier end was not comfortable against Glen Mcrath whereas Gavaskar didn’t have problem against any specific bowler.More than talent luck required for fame and elevation in life
Gavaskar - Probably technically most correct batsman of all time. Solid defense. Incredible sense of off - stump.
But he never considered as a dominating batsman.
He was excellent in test cricket.
Dravid used to play like him.
Sachin is beyond comparison A complete package of defense attack and elegance.
Sachin may be considered as perfect blending of Sunny Sehwag and VVS
gavaskar had better strike rate than sachin and dravid in test match cricket. he striked about 66 those days.
Hmmmm
36 not out in 60 overs in the first world cup 1975 opening innings............... that defines Gavaskar's cricket. Boring, Played only for Draws, Controversial, Creating bad blood in team always. ..... For all these golden Qualities of Bunny Gothaskar you have many many anecdotal evidence
Gavaskar was very good in his time, why does he have to be better or worse compared to any other player.
His record speaks for itself.
Period.
Gavaskar is the greatest batsman ever 6'5 in bowlers Unprepared pitches , 80M boundaries 🗿
Mister Gavaskar is the all time g o a t who also inspired the upcoming generation of tendulkar
I don't know why people have issues with his commentary. He has passion about his country and mainly about cricket. No personal reasons above that....
Sunil Gavaskar....Naam hi kaafi hai...
For people who understand cricket, he is one of the best commentators. Astute, unbiased, technical, and to the point. Unfortunately, passionate Indian cricket lovers don't take any critical comments too well. One way to improve is to take criticism positively.
Passionate idiots, is the correct description!
Sachin stays the bench mark, whenever lara, virat, dravid etc fans try to showcase their
fav players greatness.why cant they do it without mentioning sachin? that sums up the whole scenerio.
Bro is just talking fax
There is no better cricketer than him , India ever produced.
Sunil gavaskar is the number one batsman in india and universe he is classic batsman hats off to him.
The first OG of cricket from india.
No helmet, no protective pads but Gavaskar faced lethal bowlers like Malcolm Marshall, Andy Roberts, Lilly, Jeff Thomson like bowlers as openers and created history.
No doubt about Gavaskar,
Will always been top among all the best batsman.
Great sunil gavaskar no doubt
Gavaskar is a Legend! 💪🇮🇳❤
All said and done, Gavasker was definitely greater player than anyone else, especially when he didn't have helmet, elbow guard, and other safety equipment against mightiest of fast bowlers to play with.
Without helmet opening batsman only 'Sunil Gavaskar'
All time great batsman of the world, in terms of techniques
The first hero of Indian cricket.
Cool calm concentrated and consistent with tenacity but without helmet .The front wall the real little master.
He is capable of WALKING OUT OF THE TEST MATCH IF UMPIRE DECLARES HIM OUT IS ONE OF HIS BEST CHARACTER
he is GOAT. facing the marshals, ion bishop's, holdings, garners, collin crofts is not a joke and that too without a protection. even the great vivan richard agrees to this. who are we...
Sunny is, was and always will be the best..... comparisons are by most who were never even born and even if have no understanding of a player who never wore a helmet against real fast bowlers..... today's are trundlers including Bhumrah.... cheers
Sunny is pillar of indian cricket
Comparison will always make your experience of enjoyment bitter .So don't compare sachin ,sehwag ,virat ,sunil or anyother player with one another .In the end, india should be the winner of the match. They played for their nation 👏 😀.Thats why i respect my sports personalities
Absolutely agree
Never existed now exist and never will will be come like legend sunil gawaskar . He hi real cricket legend .
Sunny bhai abviously is and will remain the greatest batsman India has ever produced. Just look at his batting stance and you will realise why I am saying this.
And Kapil Dev his comptemporary is the greatest allrounder India has ever produced. Its only because of these 2 legends that India today are a world power in cricket.
Great player.
No one is better than ❤ Sachin ❤Over All ... !!!!!!!
Sunil Gavaskar is the Mr. Indian cricket
Gavaskar First Taught How To
Play Fearless Cricket..
Sunil Gavaskar is the greatest test batsman of all times in the history of world cricket 🏏
I love that he never scare of any bowler including our Imran Khan.
Cricket in India started with the might of Gavaskar and thereafter - it progressed slowly but surely in the path shown by him
We call the present generation fearless....
How many will dare without helmet ?
That too with Garner / Holding / Marshall / Roberts ???
Sardesai, engineer and others of that amazing team of players in the 70's
Gavaskar is The Best Test Opener till now. Sachin is nowhere near Him. Mahan Legend.
