For me, not knowing the story's ending is like taking a trip without determining where you're going. You're going to go somewhere, but will it be anywhere you want to go? In my opinion, in most cases, story crafting should be toward a specific ending. Knowing the ending gives the writer what they need to keep the story on track and bring it to its desired conclusion. The writer is crafting the story for a reason. What's the reason? The answer to that question usually informs what the ending should be or at least look like.
