The iPhone 4 here in this video was introduced in 2010 with a 3.54 inch, TFT LCD display which had a resolution of 640 x 960. It had a pixel density of 326 pixels per square inch! Fast forward to 2016 and the iPhone 6S today features a 4.7 inch "IPS" LCD display, with a resolution of 1,334 x 750 giving it a pixel density of 326 pixels per square inch. These are good screens for sure. In 2010 the TFT LCD was the best offered on the iPhone 4. But in 2016, the LPS LCD on the iPhone 6's is definitely not the best offered. IPS is better than TFT is some ways. But it is no match for the newer AMOLED displays that are on rival phones like the Galaxy S6. The Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S7 that will release on March 11th in 7 more days from now, offer Super AMOLED displays that have far superior contrast ratios, better nit brightness, better efficiency and viewing angles with resolutions that are beyond Full HD. These phones offer a 5.1 inch, 2,560 x 1,440 resolution with a pixel density of 576! That means that the Galaxy S6 has a screen that offers a 77% higher resolution display over the iPhone 6s in terms of pixel density. The iPhone screen is considered Retina from a viewing distance of 12 inches from your eyes and further back. The Galaxy S6/S7 are considered Retina from a viewing distance of just 6 inches from your eyes and further back. So from even 6 inches away from your eyes the display on the Galaxy's is so sharp that even from 6 inches from your face you could not discern the pixels that make up the screen. That and because most people can't focus on an object that it that close to there face, without going cross eyed.
***** On the battery life side the 1440p screen of the Galaxy 7 is actually considerably more efficient than Apple's 1080p LCD screen. AMOLED addressed that issue. And with today's SOC's they can now handle the QHD. Even Apple is looking at going with QHD Samsung AMOLED displays starting next year with the iPhone 8. And QHD or even higher is necessary for the VR headsets. That's part of the reason why Samsung released QHD screens. Plus high resolution images often can have better scaling on a QHD screen. Yes just looking at the screen in terms of sharpness there really is no difference. But that only holds true until the VR headsets are put on which magnify the screen.

The S7 for example beat the iPhone 6s in benchmarks while pushing a higher resolution screen and a far more complex operating system that's much larger in size. Plus when the iPhone 8 comes out, it will too be running a higher resolution screen. But when all 4 cores of the 820 are running it easily beats the dual core A9. The A9 isn't able to run Android and it's 1440p resolutions like the 820 or Exynos can. Yes Apple gets away with less powerful hardware. But only because it's a less advanced OS running at lower resolutions. I don't knock Apple with this approach. The iPhones can run the same apps and games as their Android counterparts. But it also imposes limitations to what can be done. Basically You can compare the PS4 and the PS4 Neo, to Android flagships and iPhone. (PS4.5) The PS4.5 runs the same games as the regular PS4, but only at 4K. And to do that the system is 2x more powerful. The A11 because of this, is strongly rumoured to be quad core for power and better battery efficiency. And it will be on a 10nm process. This year's A10 will be just a slight bump over the A9. The A10 is said to perform as well as the A9x in multicore benchmarks. The 820 in the S7 performance wise is nearly identical in the same multi core test. And the Snapdragon in the S8 will be built on the 10nm process too. Keep in mind to that the S7 is the response to the iPhone 6s. not the iPhone 7. With the way the release schedule is dating back to the first iPhone, the iPhone 7 is technically a generation ahead of the Galaxy S7. Yet the S7 matches and surpasses the iPhone 7 in many respects. (I'm comparing the Samsung since it's the best selling Android phone.) And Nexus phones aren't pushed as bleeding edge by Google as much since they are made via other manufacturers.

However yes times have changed and today scientifically speaking, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy Note 4 have the best displays of any cellphone. Not because of their resolution though. It's due to their brightness, deep blacks and efficiency and such. The Note 4 remains retina from as close to 8 inches from your face. So if you hold it at 12 inches, it's well beyond retina.

Nobody said it was HD… they said it was high-resolution. High-resolution means that it has a high number of pixels, HD is a CERTAIN resolution (1,280x720 or 1,080x1,920). It's true that the iPhone 5's display is 1,136x640, but the iPad's Retina display is 2,048x1,536; the 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro is 2,560x1,600; and the 15 inch Retina MacBook Pro is 2,880x1,800. Of COURSE you can see the pixels if you're trying to examine them from 1cm away, the point is, in normal use, you can't.

It doesn’t mean your phone’s display is more advanced. Also, take the display type into consideration. Two thirds of 570 is 380. So your display is probably the equivalent detail of a 380dpi LCD display.. apples 326 is never going to be outdated. Unless of course in the future we are somehow genetically modified to be able to distinguish beyond 1000 pixels per inch. And in 2020, Apple’s 326 Liquid Retina displays are still extremely color calibrated and more color accurate than most flagship Android devices today
I recently switched from a Razer laptop to a retina MBP 15 inch. It is the most compact powerhouse I have ever used. It boasts a great screen, great battery life, and great performance. The only laptop I have seen better than it in a similar design is the new Razer Blade. It is slightly slimmer, has a better GPU and slightly better CPU, but released most of a year after the Retina Line. I do agree that the iPhones and iPods are terrible compared to competition.
I also got a PC though, mainly for gaming i7 2600k, HD7950, 16GB, SSD blows my mac away but I still love my iMac and the feel of it. The thing Macs lack is good video cards, well on base models at least. I would rather use OSX over Windows any day as well.
The worst decision Apple ever made was making retina display non-optional on their laptops and discontinuing all computers without it. It's great for gaming, but so many apps still have not caught up with their compatibility. Retina makes most apps look extremely blurry. Give us the OPTION to TURN RETINA OFF!!!!

326 PPI is still considered high resolution even for today. It was incredible back then and still looks great now but I wish Apple could stop using this same number of pixels and increase it at least a bit more. Here in 2020 it’s considered a bit low for today’s standards

Well...it's a retina display being held at a "normal distance". 4cm from the eye isn't a normal distance, 25.4 cm or 10 inches is the "normal distance".
So … if one NEEDS a DVD drive one day, they just buy an external one, like say, a Toshiba one for about $20. That way, if someone needs to install something on a disc, they simply connect it via USB, insert the disc, install it, and then put it away in the drawer until they need it again in a few years, assuming they'll ever need it, that is. Personally, I'd rather go with that than have extra weight and size in my laptop just so it can read optical media that I'll hardly ever use.

its stupid how they would go and call something like this retina display on a ipad 3. I was confuse at first so I came here to see what it was about. Came here to see if it was something entirely new. All it was is that they double the resolution and crunch it into that small screen. Thats nothing new and it was stupid for them to call it retina display to make it seem like it was something new and seperate itself from other pixel screens. My Sony VGN-P588E has the same kind of pixel res too.
If it's all subjective… why bother commenting? OLED displays have inaccurate colours, and use a lot of energy to display bright colours. The only thing it’s better at showing is black - which is fine if your operating system is entirely black, but useless when your photos, videos, visited websites, apps, and ... you know, everything ... are not LCD is far from outdated, there’s no justification for that statement. Just because a technology is older, that has nothing to do with it.
I paid 1300$ for my iMac after taxes. To tell you the truth the hardware if kinda overprice. But when you look at it though the iMac does have a built in everything 21.5"/27" 1080p screen. The camera is also good quality same with the mic, built in wireless, built in bluetooth, built in speakers. I think this is what people lack when they compare to a PC all the extras that come with it. But still you would get a better PC for the price but I'm just saying it's not as bad as it seems.

Most apps designed for Macs are 1080p these days. On Windows you can use the correct settings and it works

326 PPI is still considered high resolution even for today. It was incredible back then and still looks great now but I wish Apple could stop using this same number of pixels and increase it at least a bit more. Here in 2020 it’s considered a bit low for today’s standards

Retina displays are wonderful. Text and icons on a 2012 Retina MBP look better than a 2023 high end HP.

Well...it's a retina display being held at a "normal distance". 4cm from the eye isn't a normal distance, 25.4 cm or 10 inches is the "normal distance".

So … if one NEEDS a DVD drive one day, they just buy an external one, like say, a Toshiba one for about $20. That way, if someone needs to install something on a disc, they simply connect it via USB, insert the disc, install it, and then put it away in the drawer until they need it again in a few years, assuming they'll ever need it, that is.
Personally, I'd rather go with that than have extra weight and size in my laptop just so it can read optical media that I'll hardly ever use.

its stupid how they would go and call something like this retina display on a ipad 3. I was confuse at first so I came here to see what it was about. Came here to see if it was something entirely new. All it was is that they double the resolution and crunch it into that small screen. Thats nothing new and it was stupid for them to call it retina display to make it seem like it was something new and seperate itself from other pixel screens. My Sony VGN-P588E has the same kind of pixel res too.

OLED displays have inaccurate colours, and use a lot of energy to display bright colours. The only thing it’s better at showing is black - which is fine if your operating system is entirely black, but useless when your photos, videos, visited websites, apps, and ... you know, everything ... are not

I paid 1300$ for my iMac after taxes. To tell you the truth the hardware if kinda overprice. But when you look at it though the iMac does have a built in everything 21.5"/27" 1080p screen. The camera is also good quality same with the mic, built in wireless, built in bluetooth, built in speakers. I think this is what people lack when they compare to a PC all the extras that come with it. But still you would get a better PC for the price but I'm just saying it's not as bad as it seems.
retina display is good but now its meaningless by the arrival of sony smartphones..........perfection can be seen there in sony...not in apple..display quality with x reality engine and in addition with trilluminous display technology arrives in android smart phone.....retina might begin to damage ...........due stunning perfomance of sony z series and t series.....exellent work sony......................................its appreciated........................

With this design logic no wonder apple is slowly sinking into the mid tier device catagory. Beside having extremely fast storage and amazing processors, with the lack of a decent camera and display combine with other low end features that cost way more then they should, the Iphone are obsolete even before they are for sale.
Lmao, iphone cameras are still top of the line. The megapixel game is just that, a game. The displays do more than just get the job done, have you ever owned a new iPhone yourself? Build quality is also in a class of its own, best in industry, even. It's not a wonder anymore as to why 30% of apples growth in the phone sector is from Android users switching out, the consumers are done falling for the number games.

Yes MP is a game the camera in the S7 lineup and the Note 7 is far better than the iPhone camera. OLED's produced by other companies also look vastly superior to Apples LCD displays. I'm surprised Apple still uses LCD. It's outdated and horrible.
