As always, a blast to see your first impressions, and your opinions at the end were fascinating. I will say that if there is any single Halo game you should replay at some point, this is it. As i'm sure you could tell, ODST is a game with a really moody and lonely atmosphere, that really benefits from being played solo on a rainy or cloudy day. More then that, I also think it'd be beneficial because it'd allow you to explore and listen to the audio logs as you play. I know you'll check em out in the lore stream, but so much of the game's exploration and storytelling is designed around you finding them as you play: As you noticed, the city's Superintendent AI actually changes digital signs, traffic signals etc to guide you towards the logs (not just progress), and finding logs unlocks supply caches with additional weapons and vehicles for the overworld (and they change/unlock OTHER things I'm not gonna spoil, too).
In fact, I think your takway about the "story not mattering" and some of your apprehension towards the format is due to not having listened to the logs: Without spoiling them, a LOT of the background context on Vergil/the Superintendent, and even just locations you pass by in the city and missions (since you move through the same areas in both), is contained in those logs, to the point where it recontextualizes how you look at Vergil and the locations in the city the the logs mention, making the city almost it's own character as a result. So by listening to them as you play there's a synergistic experience of the logs giving more contextual narrative meat to the main game plot and locations and vis versa.
So, I think you'd love it even more if you gave it another go while playing alone and could fully soak in the atmosphere, and took the time to get the logs as you played the game (not even nessacarily all of them, just the ones you manage to find, even if you listen to them in the lore stream before then) so you can be rewarded for your exploration (you love exploring, but you weren't rewarded much for it here because you didn't do the logs), get that extra narrative, and see how the game uses the environment and the city's infrastructure, lights, signs, etc to direct your attention.
I wish I could explain more like I did in my comments on the H2 & 3 VoD's, but I can't really point out specific areas in game log stuff ties into or writing themes since you haven't listened to the logs yet and I don't wanna spoil you. On that note, there's REALLY cool symbolism and allegories to classical literature in the logs... but me explaining that in depth or directing you to info on it will have to wait for the terminal stream when you listen to them!
I also do agree with some of your insights, though, especially your comments about VISR: it really does undermine the atmosphere despite being a core feature, and it never gives you a reason to turn it off other then to feel that atmosphere!... And yes, what JC said at the end is right: The Glyphs are an unsolved easter egg to this day, and Marty O'Donnel, the composer (who was also the guy behind Halo 3's craziest easter egg that you haven't seen yet) have said they totally mean something.

MajoraZ out here saying what we’re all thinking again so thanks for that. The big thing is the city being a character. Rookie is interesting, Buck is fun, but the city is the character I’m truly invested in with ODST - before I learnt all the log stuff and contextualised the environment I thought it was a cosy but empty game as Milo said. The logs and their implementation is really the core of what makes this game so special. Still right to not stress over it first time though.

Another thing i forgot to say I agree with your thoughts on is that it's a shame the game doesn't have more actual; stealth mechanics, and I wish that it played a little LESS like a traditional Halo game and more like a tactical shooter.

I played the OG Halo CE, a little bit of Halo 3 at a friend's (but it made my eyes hurt for some reason), and then Halo Reach, which was the game I continued to play up until I just stopped playing my Xbox in general, due to severe depression and other outside factors.
Watching this stream made me realize just how much I'd missed out. Halo 2 and 3? I really don't feel like I missed much, but ODST? I wish I could go back in time and play it with my past self, much like JC is with Milo here.

Interesting fact, those runes on the walls have been hinted by people from Bungee to actually mean something, but what that is still remains to be a mystery. Rocket Sloth made a two part series on them which lead to the obvious fact ODST was heavily inspired by Dante's Inferno and The Hollow Men. Main one being that Vergil the AI leading you the way, is the name of the angel that led Dante through hell. Unfortunately we still have yet to fully understand them beyond the fact the engineers are obviously the ones writing them. They seem to mark places of significance but their meaning isn't quite as well understood.

Cool feature to ODST is you can play every level but the last 2 in any order you want. All the collectable story mission items are available from the very beginning. Even better is no matter which one you choose as the last one there will be an access point to Vergil near by. In fact, if you do the Buck mission last next to Dare's drop pod, you'll learn one of the entrances to the super intendent was right in front of her pod. Why she wasn't in it and was able to get away so fast. The engineer was trying to tell you to follow her not trying to kill you.

I admit I didn't love ODST at first. Once again we were confined to one general location on Earth, one we've already visited twice before. Weapon damage felt significantly weaker vs Brute shields (takes like 1.5 assault rifle magazines to kill a brute). Grenades were hilariously weird to throw. Character animation seemed cartoony even for its time.
But the one thing that will always be ODST's greatest strength is its atmosphere, best demonstrated by Mombasa Streets at night. Daytime is whatever, but the nighttime isolation, the openness of the city, the amazing music...that's something that gets better with each revisit, especially since the "clues" are no longer linear

  • @ArdentPrayer

As time goes on and you go more through the series, your appreciation for ODST will grow. It took me a while before it did but now it's my favorite title. It's great seeing you go through it for the first time and hearing your first impressions! Can't wait for Reach!

    • @Matt90Nine
      @Matt90Nine 3 года назад

If you enjoy it, that's great, and I'm not trying to take anything away from you, but ODST is my least favourite by far.
Yeah Mombasa Street's atmosphere is good, but that only makes up at most half an hour of a (roughly) 8 hour game.
And the flashback missions are very jarring against MS. If you removed MS from the game and just had the main missions like any other Halo, nobody would say it was more atmospheric or personal, because the primary missions are (undeniably fun, I like them) standard Halo affair with no innovation.
The main plot revolves around the Rookie wandering about the city looking at things, until he comes across a character with actual personality, and they carry on the plot. If the Rookie didn't exist, the plot wouldn't change.
Even Virgil. Let's be honest, nobody played Halo 2 and 3 and wondered about New Mombasa, or was unable to understand the portal to the Ark - the main heroes figure it out anyway in H3 without being told by anyone from this game, so if the broader story didn't happen, nothing would change there either.
Not to mention Bungie had the nerve to charge the same as H3 for ODST, with ODST being the only game in the entire franchise to not have any adjustments to AI, its own multiplayer, nor to update the game engine in any way. MP, forge and custom games were thrown out, and replaced by Firefight, a horde mode (the 2009 equivalent of having a Battle Royale today).
As part of MCC though, it's nice (and only either free or a tenner at most) for some extra campaign levels, and as part of the MCC bundle can't really be complained about.

    • @Rougeelite74
      @Rougeelite74 3 года назад +1

@@Matt90Nine this sums up my experience with ODST as well. I wasn't so offended by the price tag and tagging on of a horde mode instead of multiplayer. I just felt like the on screen characters where one dimensional and forgettable and the good story was hidden from you as a kid. The significance of a whole AI personality wasn't given any weight in the presented story. But I feel the same for Reach. Only good character was Jorge.

Zombies content unfortunately is very sparse but video games as a whole and making fun skits would be amazing to see from you. Imagine making storyline videos and secret’s videos about other games or just staying up to date on new games. I love your content and I really want to see you grow!

I love ODST, it's my second favorite campaign after CE, however, in addition to the very spot on unlimited VISR critique, ODST is very special in a sense that you need to play it in a certain way to really appreciate it, more precisely by doing 2 runs of it, the second one being in new game plus mode (open city). Just playing it once is not the full ODST experience.
Now that you played it once, you can relaunch the game from the first playable mission from the rally point options and select "open city", hunt and find all the audiologs without doing the missions to get that Bioshock feel, and after you found the 29 ones in the city and listened to them all, only then redo all the missions (in the pace and especially order you want which is a thing in this game mode) to get to data hive or get back to the menu and load the data hive mission where the 30th is located.
It will give you a total second read on the game, and the open city thing is in my opinion the true ODST experience, I am just super sad that it wasn't the actual game Bungie went for at the front level, because it's just so good. But the marketing and all, you know how it goes. So they basically dusted the true game behind a hidden new game plus mode.
You probably won't be playing it soon, despite me loving to see it happen, and more people are probably excited to see Reach next, but I hope one day you'll remember that open city thing, and have a new appreciation on the whole thing :)
    Cheers.
(If you do plan to play the game in open city mode, you might want to do it on a different xboxlive account to reset the audiologs and weapon caches if solo, or play it coop that works too for resetting. Take care as everything in the city will be allowed to spawn in a non scripted and randomized fashion, and weapon caches do not refill in this game mode so you really have to take resource management into account. Using the Famine skull and playing in legendary is a must for roleplaying).

@mrwolfwaffles to your mid-stream evaluation of the game: this game starts with a team together in a streamlined timeline and then before gameplay splits all of the timelines and re-intertwines them throughout the story. The game almost has a Ninja Turtles vibe from the strong and unique character personalities. The good news for you is Reach has more of that family personality, which actually fits nicer with Spartans over marines due to the way they are trained. I'll leave the training methods vague and you can discover this more with Reach and the Fall of Reach book.

I think your opinion of ODST was very valid, the way I always saw the story is like Halo 1-3 is a very bombastic, macro story, following the saviour of humanity. whereas ODST is a very micro story, detailing the story of the rookie going through a destroyed city to find his lost ODST squadmates, he's not a hero, he's just a soldier. Deaths don't really seem to mean much because this far into the war, billions of humans have died, Bucks team are all replacements. I mean in halo three alone, the Elites glassed half a continent of people on earth after floodgate. I dont think it was meant to be a super heart wrenching story, just a melancholy look into war, and to remind us that the war doesn't follow chief. While he was off on delta halo and killing regret in the second game, Truth was already sending his fleet to dig up the portal to the ark in preparation for his arrival on the keyship
Also as im sure has been said to you, ODST Really comes to life when you play it on your own, with no chat or anything, just yourself, the music and the atmosphere, walking around the dead city, listening to logs of the inhabitants

I also felt the same way about the squad members as Milo. (Exept Rookie)
But I think Milo would've enjoyed it much more if he played it solo for the first time. Because the intel in this is really connected to the backbone of the story in my opinion.
I never read the halo 3 terminals because they were not meant to be read in the first playthrough. They were literally hidden.
In this game though, first audio logs were crying for attention. They were vrgil's(AI) way of telling YOU "the Rookie" his story. And it didn't break the flow of the game(for me). Although I haven't read all of them, they still helped me to find my opinion that the theme of the game was "Mistery", and not "A grounded take on the war".

The stuff you were saying about not feeling that connected to the characters makes me excited to see your take on Halo Reach, 4 and 5. First time subb! Loved your playthroughs so far! Omg watching you play halo has brought flashbacks I forgot even existed. Thank you for that and I'm glad you are enjoying this master piece of a series.
About ODST I feel ya man. When I first played it, it was such a big change of pace it turned me off. As others have already said, it might grow on you. I think the biggest reason why I decided to finally play and give it another go was due to the fact at a time of my life where I felt depressed I needed something to soothe my soul and ODST was one of them. Playing it on my own exploring Mombasa streets was an adventure of a soldier all on his own to find his squad who ironically like you the player does not have an emotional connection to them. But he does so to continue the war effort. Though their battles might not get much attention, they do it for humanity, for the chiefs success, and for each other cause they're all they got. With this mindset if you ever replay it, I think will help! If it doesn't no worries man haha we all have our favorite halo

  • @shootermtd25

This was a great stream but I realized shortly into this game that I never played this game. So the nostalgia factor between 1,2,3 and excitement of watching a game you loved being enjoyed second hand through someone who has never played it made those games even more exciting.
So, as someone who watched this game for the first time, I agree with you that it feels choppy and there’s not really ever that connection to the characters we barely know. I knew all about this game for the past 12 years but this is genuinely not what I thought this game was. I was 11 when this game came out so it’s funny that I never played, being the halo fan I was (am). But, still a great game with good characters and seemed like it was a good time. I just wish we knew the characters more heading right into the 1st mission.
