Hello .. my name is Stephanie and I live in Houston Texas. Susannah Martin is my fifth great grandmother. I was blown away when you showed her gravesite and I teared up as well. Thank you for being there and sharing ❤️ I was born July 1962 and she was hanged July 1692 🥲
I'm related to her through a brother her maiden family, the North side. Sadly thats not a grave site but a memorial, they dont know where theyre buried or if they were even given a grave. I hope the family snuck her away and buried her secretly. Where her house once stood has a marker nearby.
@@Grandizer8989 : thank you for the correction. I did mean memorial stone . I don’t know where they laid my great grandmother to rest but I intend to find out . Thanks again
Are you sure? 1692 was 330 years ago.. Even by today's standards where an average generation is about 25 years years, that would mean she'd have to be more like your 12th great-grandmother, not 5th...
Hi my name is Ellen and i live in Erie ,Pa. Mary Parker is my fifth great grand mother. Thank-you so much for the awesome tour. Your empathy for the people is very much appreciated.
I was in Salem last time I was in the states. Its a beautiful place, as a complete sceptic and atheist I must admit I found the stories heartbreaking that such despicable crimes once again were so cruelly carried out in the name of religion.
8:43 - George Burroughs was the only minister to be executed during the Witch Trials. "Mr. Burroughs was carried in a cart with others, through the streets of Salem, to execution. When he was upon the ladder, he made a speech for the clearing of his innocency, with such solemn and serious expressions as were to the admiration of all present; his prayer (which he concluded by repeating the Lord's Prayer) was so well worded, and uttered with such composedness as such fervency of spirit, as was very Affecting, and drew tears from many, so that it seemed to some that the spectators would hinder the execution. The accusers said the black man [Devil] stood and dictated to him. As soon as he was turned off [hanged], Mr. Cotton Mather, being mounted upon a horse, addressed himself to the people, partly to declare that he [Mr. Burroughs] was no ordained Minister, partly to possess the people of his guilt, saying that the devil often had been transformed into the Angel of Light."
everyone, even the most educated and intellectual, were complete dumasses pretty much thru all human history until about the early-mid 20th century when even the most uneducated person was still smarter than the smartest person whod ever lived before then.
What an amazing interesting place, I love your appreciation of the sites you visit. I also love that you are so happy in each other's company. PS people are hanged. ☮️
Next time you go to Salem, you should head over to Danvers and check out the actual Salem Village Samuel Parris parsonage (the hanged George Burroughs lived there at one time as well) excavation site with some interpretive signage to explain it. Right behind the house at 67 Center St.
They need to make something for Giles. He was pressed to death all because he would not confess to a crime he didn’t commit. If that isn’t the American spirit I don’t know what is. People in that area need to petition city council to get on it.
What really struck me was all of the names of men that were hanged. I think, as I did, it was only women that were accused, persecuted, and executed for practicing witch craft. School is in. 📚✏️
Here is a known fact because you mentioned her name 8:02. Martha husband was one of the guys that would not put a plead in and they put stones on him by laying aboard across his stomach and for two days piled rocks on it that literally crushed them to death that's also in the books... Martha Corey, whose octogenarian husband, Giles, upon being accused of witchcraft and refusing to enter a plea, had been subjected to peine forte et dure (“strong and hard punishment”) and pressed beneath heavy stones for two days until he died.
If you ever get a chance to come to the uk, Scotland and England’s witch trials were beyond nuts, 19 were executed in Salem, over 1500 in the Scotland trials. Crazy.
I wonder if those executions coincide with a poor harvest. My theory about Salem is that the witchcraft was a pretense to seize the property of the accused. It's like how the drug war is used to seize property, and gain access to the resources of 3rd countries, such as South America by the CIA, for American corporations.
@@stevenwebster3286 I wouldn’t discount that. There probably was a time when people saw an advantage to turn in there competition or rival and to use witch craft as a easy method. People can be arseholes regardless of the time period.
If I’m not mistaken I think that’s what started the witch trials in the new world (usa)…they feared that witches escaped over there to the new world in order to practice witchcraft safely and freely.
@@845SiM One thing people need to remember is that women were not allowed to own property when they lost a spouse or and had no male relative and if they were the only survivor left, it was quite common to turn them in for witchcraft to get their land. Some of the magistrates actually got the land after the deaths of the victims. When really digging into it, it’s easy to see why a lot of people view this as one of the most devious land grabs in colonial history after the girls made those claims. Those people got played. When England had enough on both continents they ended the practice.
Also the pendle witch trials which happend in east of lancashire and most likely alot more witch trials up and down the UK mainly in scotland and england where only 5 happened in wales
A child who likely did not understand what was occuring, made to believe what she witnessed was wicked because someone decided Catholics were heroics., only to be discarded once it was over.
I have studied the witch trails for years. As a historian, it's important to teach my girls about this time and place. I learned a lot myself because, of course, even as a historian, there's always something new to learn. Thank you for pointing out that there's no memorial for Mr. Giles Cory, who was pressed. It's important for all of these innocent victims to the hysteria be acknowledged. God rest their souls. 😢
Thank you for remembering my 9th GREAT-GRANDFATHER, GILES COREY! It is odd when you realize that one of your past grandfathers was murdered for stupidity.
@nanabutner I think he was an honorable man. He didn't give in to protect his own. I can't imagine the agony he went through, but he did what any good father would have done, and bc of that, he would never be forgotten.
This is such a sad historical event. We had things like this too in the U.K. as well ,but witches were burnt or drowned .Very disgusting treatment. Most were innocent people and they lost their lives because someone had a grudge, disliked them, jealousy etc.So many lives lost and sometimes whole families. The worse part the wise women who knew about herbs and acted as midwives were amongst these. So villages and towns lost all that help .These women were so skilled and had been taught from Mother to Daughter for generations. This is when doctors only cure was bloodletting and leeches..So because of loosing women like this others suffered for it too.So sad.I am glad they remember all those who died because they were normal people. It’s sad how witches get labelled with a bad name.Mose are just in tune with the earth and Spirit and are loving caring people .You may even have one living next door. You would never know. The Bad ones(Black witches) ..Mess with things they should not and will live to regret it.These paint a bad picture for all witches .Brilliant video once again and very informative.I did not know that one had been crushed. That must have been awful for him and no doubt drawn out too..Glad I found your Chanel..Love n Light 🥰
It started with the salem witch trials through sheer hysteria on top of the power of sugestion and theres no such thing as black or light "magic" its all about the intent behind it
No accused "witches" were burned in the UK. Massachusetts Bay, as a colony of the UK, went by British law. Heretics were burned, accused "witches" were hanged.
Watching this it makes me realise just how young a country America is. One of our local pubs opened 1622 and is still running. Kings head in Chester. We just walk past it without a thought and buildings that are hundreds of years old. I really must record some of these places more in depth rather than quickly in passing. Even the roman amphitheatre and gardens we walk by without a thought although they are 1000 years old. Great video as always guys, nice to see you reporting on this and great to see the US preserving history rather than bulldozing it like we do too much.
I live 20 minutes from salem and my grandmother is friends with Lori Cabot and a psychic that works in salem. I also got the privilege to meet Lori Cabot when I was pregnant with my first daughter and she came up to me and she put her hand my belly and blessed my daughter and said "she will be a amazing child." No one knew at the time what I was having.
I'm so glad you mentioned Lori. Was thinking of the first time I saw anything on TV about Salem. It was In Search Of & she was in that episode! Has to be late 70's.
My husband just found out recently after an ancestry search that Susannah Martin is his 6th great grandmother on his mothers side. She is one of the 19 names memorialized on proctors ledge.
I like how Jessica is placed somewhere in many of the shots, in the distance, with little movement from her and appears almost ghostly. Like an apparition. Nice touch! I like it! Just recently discovered this Toober and now I'm subscribed! I'm hooked!
I am a witch and I made the trip to Salem several years ago. I always wanted to go there to pay homage to the people who were killed (targeted) for being different or for merely being easy targets. I got so much just by standing at the foot of Gallows Hill and going to the witches jail than anything else in Salem. If you go there to tour the area, avoid the big Witch Museum. It's a rip off. Also, I stayed at Best Western Plus - North Shore Hotel in Danvers and saved a lot of money by doing so. The tradeoff is the traffic you have to deal with between the hotel and Salem. Also try to find the time for a ghost tour; pretty cool.
Most places that turn into tourist attractions end up being a huge rip off and i guess thats how businesses thrive off people especially tourists and probably dont get any more info etc that you dont get from doing actual guide tours or by looking around
I visited salem for the same purposes the hotel salem makes things easier and one of the cheaper too. If you go again the witch walk is lead by one of the high priests or priestess of salem they practice the Cornish (english) witchcraft. It gives you a different way of calling the corners to different practices and a witches perspective as well as the history of salem. One of the better tours.
Just another example of people abusing the idea of Religion to further personal interest. Blind faith always leads to terrible abuses to innocent people. Dominance and control, two great evils of human DNA programming, were a huge component as well. May all of the victims RIP.
I couldn’t click on this video fast enough. I used to live in Salem, and get there 2x a year with my kids. The Peabody Essex Museum is world class, and I love browsing the Pagan gift stores. The Hawthorne Hotel is the best place to stay and is known for ghosts.
Hi Michael and Jessica :) I really like the respectful way you told the Salem Witch Trial history. We love the spooky part at Halloween but we also need to remember these were real innocent people who were murdered . Thank You once again for a lovely thoughtful walk through Salem's "witch" history . Happy Halloween :)
@@jenniferh.2150 I love how narcissistic people are about history. Like somehow you or anyone would be different or have some kinda foresight or wisdom that nobody else would have. You do realize that in the future they are gonna laugh at us because we are currently thinking crazy shit that isn’t true as well.
Pressed to death is a story in its self. Samuel Sewall's diary states, under date of Monday, September 19, 1692: About noon at Salem, Giles Cory was pressed to death for standing mute; much pains was used with him two days, one after another, by the court and Captain Gardner of Nantucket who had been of his acquaintance, but all in vain.. however he did say more weight and he never confessed . They needed to get a confession no matter what I have ancestors who died at that trial
I've never seen a head stone from the 1600s usually there from the 17s cool thanks for sharing I really would love to go to Salem. And Giles Corey said more weight until he died because he was innocent
My aunt was a medium - she would move a ouija board without touching it , she read tea leaves & tried out coffins. many saw her as creepy & strange but she loved everyone & would do anything for anyone. It is horrible to think that this woman would have been tortured & put to death for being evil because she was “Different” she wouldn’t hurt anyone… sadly we haven’t “evolved” much since then either. Hatred over color, religion, etc is rampant & innocent lives are taking by the ugliness of prejudice 😞… thank you so much for sharing!
@@steviesgirlbrenwag People rarely believe in such things until they have a direct experience themselves that they can't explain. The problems is the human DNA programming that seeks to dominate and control for personal interest and survival, we act like animals a lot.
Fun fact: the green associated with witch actually came from Wizard of Oz because they thought green looks good onscreen. Before that, red or orange were the common colors for witches.
John Proctor is my 9 times great uncle. His wife, Elizabeth, was also accused of being a witch and was sentenced to hang. Because she was pregnant her execution was delayed until after she gave birth. For some reason, Elizabeth was not executed after she gave birth inJanuary 1693. In May of that year the governor ordered all persons tried and convicted of being witches be released from jail. The families had to pay the government for “room and board” for the time their relative spent behind bars. Prior to their conviction the sheriff of Salem seized all their belongings, leaving nothing for their children. After Elizabeth was released, she had no home or money and the people of Salem treated her as if she were dead. Eventually, the courts ordered that John’s children from his previous marriages, return to Elizabeth her dowry. In 1703, Elizabeth was granted a “return of attainder”, which returned all the property that had been seized or be reimbursed for the animals that were sold. It is believed that John Proctor’s body was removed by family members and buried near their former property. John could not be buried in an church cemetery as he was convicted of being a witch and was “tainted”. Elizabeth remarried and lived a quiet life until her death. The drama, The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is loosely based on the lives of John and Elizabeth Proctor.
This history deeply upsets me and needs to be told, not only am I biracial but wiccan as well, there are mediums in my family. Telling of history is not just interesting and educational, but its a reminder of the past and what not to repeat in the future and respecting the victims of this time
Well Western Civilisation is falling as we speak. So that history will be gone and races will only be safe among their own … you being mixed race… who do you go with ? 😂 guess you’re fucked.
My best friend and I walked through this cemetery in knee deep snow in mid February in 2010. We had so much fun. We were bundled up and the only people there.
Something I wanted to share with the two of you and the audience was in regard to hanging back in the day. These poor souls because of the property they owned were strangled to death, except for poor Giles the beyond brave who was pressed to death. Those that were hung had the rope put around their necks and at the appointed time they were pushed forward, strangling until they were dead with no drop to snap the neck. Disgusting and most vile deeds took place there in 1692.
Put himselve on the country Mean't cause he was born in england in 1611 Northampton and then so being born of british blood n bones those sicko's could felt his death shall thus be one of pain and agony to send a message that witchcraft or witches will not be tolerated ever!!!.....what a punch of sick twisted individual these ppl were.....
Poor giles was a murderer from way back. A son of my waaaaay back great grandparents was beaten to death by giles. Jacob Goodale, a somewhat mentally challenged young man, was accused of stealing some apples off giles' farm. Apples! Giles was found guilty but only paid a measly fine. To me, he got what he deserved! It took Jacob days to die too, from his brutal beating.
Another brilliant vlog 👍🤘 would love to go to Salem, although I can't help thinking about the kid floating at the window every time I hear the word Salem 😂❤️
I live in Rhode Island and have been to Salem a few times. Halloween is the busiest time of year but people recommend you don’t go because people can get really crazy in Salem on Halloween. It’s for safety reasons they recommend people not going. The last time I went to Salem was with my friend and her friend who found out through Ancestry that she’s related to Bridget Bishop. It was funny because when you’re in Salem you see lots of people on the streets doing role playing and people being taken away to court and you can watch mock trials. But a woman role playing as Bridget Bishop came up to us and my friend’s friend wanted to tell her she was her ancestor. I think she said Bridget was a cousin but I could be wrong, it was a while ago.
Me and a friend did a trip to Salem in 2019. Funny thing is we were unaware of the shrine they built at Proctor's Ledge. We came up the hill from behind the Walgreens and actually explored the hanging spot. When you get away from the kitsch of Salem and actually stand on the spot where those poor innocent people were hanged for no good reason it's sobering. So glad you guys tapped into that feeling at the end. Amazing place. We also hit the Rebecca Nurse farm where there's another shrine in the graveyard. One of the victims has a grave there as well. Legend states that the bodies were cut down and tossed in a niche on Proctor's Ledge but that the families of some snuck in and recovered them and buried them privately. Witches were not allowed propper graves.
Wow . I didn’t know the couldn’t be buried . Thank god for friends and family. I guess they would have just left the bodies to rot . That’s horrible. 😢
Your post is amazing. Not only am I a descendant of Rebecca Nurse and her sister Mary Estey, but I visited Proctors Ledge in 2018 and happened to meet a family descended from Quakers who supposedly snuck the bodies out at night to give them a proper Christian burial.
I've watched many documentaries about the witch trials in both Salem and in the UK. It was clearly one of the most heartbreaking and shameful acts in our human history. So many people died because of believing in irrational superstition and prejudice. The Witch trials are more than just a real life horror story, but also an example of what people can be like when they are at their worst. I visited Salem two times and it truly is a beautiful place. Love your video by the way!
Back then people were jealous , selfish and envious of others whom had land and wealth ! When these witch laws came out , neighbours were pointing fingers at one another ! The same happened in Britain ! A historian once said “ These acquisitioners that made these laws , accused and condemned were nothing more than psychotic serial killers who revelled in torturing and killing ! They would go from place to place , using these laws for their own blood lust ! Beautiful place for such a horrid historical background but as they say you never judge a book by it’s cover ! The community as others have said have learnt by their mistakes and have tried to clean and make this area more forgiving for what had happened in the past and preserved the good parts and comemerated the innocent lives that were taken by these vile serial killers ! I’m enjoying your RUclips and learning a lot !
This just came through my feed! What great content! Hope you guys visit Salem again soon. Btw~ Rebecca (Towne) Nurse, Elizabeth (Towne) Howe, and Mary (Towne) Eastey were sisters and my 9th great-grandaunts. Their brother Joseph was my 9th great-grandfather. Fortunately their parents were no longer alive to see three of four daughters falsely accused and executed. Rebecca was a 71 yr old grandmother with 9 children.
1692 was a busy year...especially through July-September. That's absolutely heartbreaking. I've always enjoyed researching this topic. Giles Corey, I cannot imagine that death. He refused to say...not guilty. You've gotta respect the man for that strong will. That witch was hilarious though and I loved her makeup! What a character. I AM A 🪄🧹 WITCH.
Hey there, I'm from Australia I really really enjoyed this video, I remember many years ago my mum, my sister and I watched a movie about the town Salem and the Salem witch trails, I didn't watch the whole movie because I was busy with other stuff. Anyway I absolutely love the history behind the Witch trials and I absolutely love this video, I hope that one day I can watch the movie again and this time finish it. Thank you so very much for sharing us your awesome experience at Salem. Hopefully someday in the future I'll be able to come visit Salem. 😊 😊 Thank you. Oh yes, before I forget, before the intro song you play at the beginning of the video, I want to know what's the name of the song that you used? (The one with the chains sounds and the chanting song I mean, I would love to have a copy of the song.)
This is the first time seeing some of this in a video. Thank you. Very interesting to see and hear about. I would love to go there someday. I love her fingernails too.
I’ve taught The Crucible and historical background info on Salem to my high school students for years. Interestingly, the reason you see the victims hung approx a month apart is bc judges made the rounds back then only 1x per month. As you pointed out, Judge Hathorne is buried in Salem. His ancestor, writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, was so ashamed of his past that he changed the spelling of his name. Thanks, Guys. Great job as always. ❤️👏🏻
A good book about the trials and the environment they occurred in is “The Witches” by Stacy Schiff. It is well researched and explores what was behind the trials in the context of the time they occurred.
Writing this about my husband who has been to salem many times. It means alot to him as his mom was what you call a traditional pagan Wiccan. Its tragic til this day that people believe its evil ! Wiccans are one with mother earth 🌎 similar to the native americans.Thank you guys for your compassionate episode❤
The hysteria emanating from witch trials turns people from human to beast. Group hysteria nearly always leads to irrational conclusions. So the people of Salem who were executed simply were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were truly martyrs. They deserve all our respect. Thanks for the up close and personal account. I still want to go to Salem. Saving my money!!
I've been here a few times. The first in '87. The last, around 2018. In 2006, I took a picture of a friend of mine in front of that same tribute statue to Elizabeth Montgomery. Fast fact: Elizabeth Montgomery not only portrayed Lizzy Borden in a movie - she was also a direct descendent of her.
Get well.... It went through my house this week.... Second time and not sure how my daughter's and wife looked like death, but my son and I tested negative both round... Meanwhile I still got mildly sick but never tested positive... Weird
Your wording is perfect on what towns or places do, immediate erasing. The sheer amount of hanging in a time period is so hard to fathom. Happy Halloween 🎃

In 1676, at age 65, Corey was brought to trial in Essex County, Massachusetts, for allegedly beating to death one of his indentured farm workers, Jacob Goodale (also spelled "Goodell" or "Goodall"), son of Robert and Catherine Goodale and brother to Isaac Goodale.[6] According to witnesses, Corey had severely beaten Goodale with a stick after he was allegedly caught stealing apples from Corey's brother-in-law, and though Corey eventually sent him to receive medical attention ten days later, Goodale died shortly thereafter. Since corporal punishment was permitted against indentured servants, Corey was exempt from the charge of murder and instead was charged with using "unreasonable" force. Numerous witnesses and eyewitnesses testified against Corey, as well as the local coroner, and he was found guilty and fined.
HE is my 9th GREAT-GRANDFATHER AND MARY COREY, HIS FIRST WIFE, WAS MY 9th GREAT-GRANDMOTHER. He did have a reputation for having a very bad temper. I don’t know because so much of the history was not passed down to us.
ARE YOU SAYING THAT BECAUSE OF MY GRANDFATHER’s temper--and remember your relative was stealing-- that my 9th GREAT-GRANDFATHER deserved to be murdered?
Grammer Police here! Great video as usual, BUT "Hung" has a different meaning than hanged which is the correct and proper word you numerous times meant to say. While a jury and a picture can be hung, a man's genitals could show that he is well hung (sexually endowed), but people hanging from a noose were hanged (and not hung). Why are they different? I don't know! I was raised by a mother who was an English major, and she schooled me on this many years ago. 😆
It appears that you were following us around. We were here during the nation-wide heat wave in Summer 21. This is one of the saddest places I've ever been to. Especially the hanging site.
Great video. Huge nostalgia for me since I lived in Salem for nearly 10 years. I can't believe that jail is now a residence. It was abandoned when I lived in Salem and it was a creepy creepy place. I can't fathom living in that place now. One weird story: one Halloween I had taken a picture of a guy dressed as Michael Myers standing in front of the house that is next to Charter Street cemetery. It was in the 90's so I developed the film and had it printed. For years there was only one person in the photo. Then one day I looked closer at the photo and there was a second person next to Michael Myers in camouflage hiding in the bushes! This guy never said anything, he didn't move, and for years I didn't even know he was in the photo. It creeps me out thinking about it to this day.

I lived near where the Pendle Witch trials took place. Very scary to think how with just one accusation you're dead.

@@LadyElizabethPrimRose THANK YOU!

Great video!!! 💜🖤
Love how Michael always takes a minute out of his time to tell Jessica he loves her!!!
That is so sweet!

Giles Corey’s story gave me the chills after you started playing the music lol. These stories are very interesting and I love it

I am a witch and I made the trip to Salem several years ago. I always wanted to go there to pay homage to the people who were killed (targeted) for being different or for merely being easy
targets.
I'm a witchfinder general
Stop being fake.
I couldn’t click on this video fast enough. I used to live in Salem, and get there 2x a year with my kids. The Peabody Essex Museum is world class, and I love browsing the Pagan gift stores. The Hawthorne Hotel is the best place to stay and is known for ghosts.
This is my favorite video of yours. The emotions of it, really got to me.
As my mom always says..."Don't judge history by today's standards."
Yup history is part of our lives .
I agree, so much judgement from people who weren't there and don't know what was actually going on.

Giles Corey was my 9th GREAT-GRANDFATHER so we both lost family to the hysteria
I've never seen a head stone from the 1600s usually there from the 17s cool thanks for sharing I really would love to go to Salem. And Giles Corey said more weight until he died because he was innocent
Love and respect to the innocent women who lost there lives in 1692 . Love and respect for True witches
I hope your aunt is doing alright 😔

Love watching your videos. So many interesting facts.

Thank you for sharing this. It was interesting.

Brutal. Akin to torture.

Amazing book! yet so heartbreaking 💔 Bernadette

I did not see your comment and posted the same thing. Makes a person think about karma.
