About Aaron Blaise:

Aaron Blaise is an animation feature film director and wildlife artist.
For 21 years Aaron worked with Disney helping to create some of the greatest animated films ever made. During that time he worked as an animator or supervising animator on "The Rescuers Down Under", "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "The Lion King", "Pocahontas", "Mulan" and more.
In 2003 he was co-director of "Brother Bear" for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.
After "Brother Bear" he helped to develop several projects but ultimately left Disney to pursue an opportunity back home in Florida. Aaron recently served as 2D Animation Supervisor and Character Designer for the "The Bear and the Hare" an advertisement loved by millions around the world. ( • Video )

2D animation will never be dead.
+Taco Love I don't think it ever went dead. In fact, I think hand-drawn animation is more alive now than ever before since it's easier to do now. Computers have enabled amateurs and studios to make hand-drawn animation much, _much_ easier. :)
I just wish we had more of those smoothly 2D animated films like disney and don bluth did in the past, that's why the Disney's Renaissance Era and the Golden Age Era were two of my favorite eras of cartoon animation, they had a lot of effort put into them.
superyoshibros99 You should watch a lot of the films that have been coming out of France by Sylvain Chomet like The Illusionist and Triplettes of Belleville.
Ernest et Celestine is also a fantastic hand drawn French film.
Also, look up The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea by Cartoon Saloon from Ireland.
Also, I assume you're familiar with Studio Ghibli, but they have made quality hand drawn films.
ALSO I hear Brazil has put out some animation recently like A Boy and the World but I haven't had the chance to watch it.
Steven Bowser I am aware of Studio Ghibli and also aware that france and other countries still do hand drawn animation, but I just have pity for the American animation industry, I wish we would go back to making 2D animation again. I'm not saying that 3D animated movies should die out but there should be a balance between the two. In fact it would be awesome if there was a movie that combines 2D animation with 3D/CGI elements. The only thing I can think off on the top of my head is The Amazing World of Gumball, which has beautiful animation in my opinion, even though it's not a movie and is just a cartoon series, still it's a perfect example of blending artstyles.
I just wish America would make these 2D animated films again, this is why I binge watch all of disney's classics and don bluth's old movies. Even though old animations like Secret of Nimh 2 or A Troll in Central Park were atrocious movies, you can still appreciate how much effort the animators went through to make the characters move so smoothly and fluently.
And yes I loved Secret of Kells, it's one of my 2D animated movies in my book, I like how they borrowed that Genndy Tartakovsky style and turn it into a creative, heartwarming masterpiece!

And I couldn't agree more. I think big studios don't understand that audiences just want good _stories_ and nobody really cares about the medium.
When The Princess and the Frog didn't sell well, it feels like their consensus was, "Well, it must have sold poorly because it was hand drawn" but that isn't the case at all. It's the story and character that people care about and remember.
So I have no doubts that if a legitimate, well made hand drawn film came out from Disney and had a great story and memorable characters then it would do just as good as any other CG movie.
(Also, not to nitpick you, but I wouldn't say Kells borrowed from Tartakovsky at all, I would say it borrows from the source material: traditional Irish illuminated manuscripts like the Book of Kells. The styles of Song of the Sea and Kells are both inspired by traditional Irish artwork. But I do see your comparison with Tartakovsky, it is a very flat style with less perspective and very clearly communicated posing and shapes)

I know this is an OLD comment, but I would say the likeness was also based on the voice actor of Maurice, Rex Everhart. Google him and you'll see he looks a lot like Belle's father. But I would totally agree, they used aspects of that animator too. Especially his little nose!

The Art of Aaron Blaise the case is entirely the same for me. Learning from you gentlemen is quite the honour for kids like myself, who grew up loving that scene from the lion king, and who were inspired to draw by YOU! I am what I am because of Disney and you are part of what that is for me. I love 2D animation , I love drawing animals, caricatures and basically anything that's a but magical. After seeing this video, I know I owe that huge part of myself partly to you specifically, Aaron. I know that because that darned scene with skeptical little Nala's scrunched up face has stuck with and always tickled me. So cute. I don't know if that is where my career is going so far (I'm in law school because i like to confuse people by doing random unexpected crap haha I dunno) but if I follow that dream, I want to be able to make people laugh and remember cute scenes like that. I don't care if they don't know my face or name. Making people feel is an awesome, awesome gift. Sorry I got so intense and wrote so much. I just thought you should know that artists such as yourself inspire us youngins more than you probably realize.
My dream is to some day be in your position, Aaron, make a living out of my biggest love - telling stories through animation, and I adore your channel because whenever I feel like it's impossible, too out of my reach, or that I'm not good enough, and my fiery passion dies - it gives me hope, fills me with motivation and gives me the power to keep fighting and work even harder. Same here! There are so many ideas that can fully realized in 2D animation with fun designs and unique to our style animating as a whole.

Man it would of been chill to have an art teacher like you for HS, when I was a senior in HS. An art teacher was very whats the word.. Harsh with artwork, now when I think of art its a way of showing who you are and expressing your feeling and the love you see around you or whatever comes to mind. But I almost failed art completely which had my hopes running low with art. Now I'm not exactly great especially with anatomy but each of your videos are very inspiring. Not to mention you are showing people how to have fun with art, no matter at what pace. That art teacher though I know he meant well but he really show how art really isn't. If it wasn't amazing or didn't look exactly how he had it, he make you do it again or else fail. I was the oddball one and kept working with art my way and since I've found this channel (thanks to a friend of mine) you make art so much fun, and entertaining not to mention I love the intro guitar playing there I like playing the guitar as well. Also awesome you got to meet up with those two artists as well, very inspiring. :)
What Eric said really resinated with me. It reminds me of the old Disney animations, where the character really goes into their feelings 100%. A sad character would slump right over and drag their feet and a happy character would have their chest out to the sky, head up and proud looking. I need to exaggerate my characters more. Also, Tom's advice was great as well. I realised that I should try and be better then what I was a week ago and not compare to other people.

Great! I worked with Eric Goldberg on the Aladdin attraction for Japan Disney and worked with Tom’s brother Tony on a couple of Feature Animation movies. What you are saying is true. I got into computer graphics in 1985. There were absolutely no schools teaching the technology. My parents did not support my endeavor to go into art. From the time I was in fifth grade I got a job and paid for my own classes on my own. I’ve had a wonderful career in the film industry working with the most amazingly, Talented people in the world. If you really want something, you will work hard to get it. Have faith, seek out knowledge and be the best at what you do. I hope to meet Aaron someday because I would love to draw animals like him!

Yeah, Both Tom & Eric are saying right .One must start learn right now because oneself can learn by his/her experience & find out that what are the secrets & what should learn next or what's missing for becoming better Artist as Tom saying & if you focus carefully you can also find that where to start as Eric is saying about observation & Caricaturing & this is the main thing that Art Fundamentals also teach about observing, how to seeing & Feeling then Caricaturing that feeling then Visually Communicating to the audience by whether it's Paper, 3d Software etc. Thanks to all of you Great Legends by giving this Great Advice to us.

I'm planning to go to Texas A&M, I heard they have a great animation program and close to pixar. I narrowed to this mainly due to the fact that art schools like CAL arts or Ringling are too expensive, and Fred park is a professor there :)

You know what? Thank you so much for this. Up till now I kinda just thought I'm not able to be amazing at art as some of my idols are. That I'd always just be this mediocre artist who's only really good at drawing cartoons. But this video made me realise I'm more than capable of bettering myself if I just put in the work to do it. So starting tomorrow (I'm about to sleep right now) I'm going to search up some lessons and get to work. Thank you so much.
I honestly prefer 2d to 3d animation. There's just a certain kind of charm that brings you closer the artist that you dont get in 3d

Hey Aaron! I just want to say thank you!! and thanks to Eric and Tom for the wonderful and great advice, I recently stopped studying my degree in Animations to focus more on my craft and my skills because for me it is important to do more productive work, I studied motion graphics in the past and studied animations for 3 years, after learning and developing the skills I didn't had the time to make my own Animations that I wanted to. I am an aspiring 2D Animator with a hearing loss on my right ear. I studied 3D but it never my thing and I got to admit I hated 3D.... 2D is my passionate and love ever since the early days of Walt Disney. I never want to stop drawing 2D it is the talents and skills that I grew up to be. What advice would you give to animators who stopped studying and wanting to get a job in the animations studios? because I am in this situation right now and it is so hard since it is very competitive and I am only 25 but nowadays there are are 3D and I don't like doing 3D. I hope you can help me with the answer. It would means the world to me Talk soon mate.
