@miyor123 It just works on so many levels. (1) The sheet music doesn't give the pronunciation, which is a random, farcical situation. (2) The guy is into musical theater enough to audition for a part (he's very skilled at sight-singing!), yet he doesn't know this song, which is by Gershwin, who wrote numerous classic musicals. (3) Despite increasing discomfort, he forges on like a real professional entertainer... until he finally just snaps.
I saw this some 20 or so years ago, and had no idea as to the source. (I'd thought it was John Cleese, too.) Occasionally, I'd look for it on-line... and today I found it! Yay! Thank you, lukertweek!
The Wiki entry for the song is interesting. Yes, I remember Cleese having that audition. Then, the punchline was "I don't see what's at issue here." Greetings from East Anglia in England.
Yes, Derek...didn't think that was a young John Cleese, as someone had commented here. Though I did see Cleese perform this on some comedy special a long time ago. The only difference there (that I remember) is that at the end, Cleese threw the music sheet over his shoulder as he walked-off in disgust, saying, "Stupid song." Funny skit!
@@roberthoyle749 I'm sure I saw it in a movie called "Monty Python Meets Beyond the Fringe." Played in Chicago at the Biograph or Three Penny in the late 70s.
Was searching high and low for this to show my kids. Thank you for putting this up ❤

Brilliant. But I wish the end hadn't been chopped off.
Still great in 2022
I * * really* * need to see Michael Palin do this sketch.

I thought it was Cleese on the album, "A Poke in the Eye With a Sharp Stick".

Yes that’s where I first saw it but I think performed by different actors, both from Beyond The Fringe and definitely not by Cleese.
Brilliant!
Okay, thanks!
