    I feel like the people who talk about how "well this is not how my anxiety works" forget that anxiety is actually an emotion. When that emotion takes over, that's when it becomes a disorder.

    • @BuizelCream
      @BuizelCream 5 месяцев назад +429

      The movie even depicts the start of a potential disorder when Anxiety went haywire, unable to let Riley go. We just didn't have a storybeat left to develop that into something complex and specific, which comes at a cost of alienating some audienes.

      The thing is, yeah…. Anxiety is really excitement crossed with fear. And I did like how when anxiety takes over, it really takes over. There really are lots of Easter eggs, though, in the movie which are poking fun of stuff that GenX and Millennials grew up with. Pouchy, of course, is poking fun of Dora’s backpack. Anxiety taking over imagination land (which is what anxiety does) not only was a jab at Disney corporate but also was a call back to the 1984 book and movie and the original Super Bowl Macintosh commercial from 1984.

    • @Rikrobat
      @Rikrobat 5 месяцев назад +146

      That and anyone complaining needs to understand that because anxiety manifests differently in everyone, trying to represent all of its iterations is going to risk making Riley's reactions feel inconsistent and still not representative because of the efforts to cover all bases, rather than doing a focused version for this character.

      @NobodyC13 5 месяцев назад +290

      Dad's Anger is the captain that steers the ship and ensures everything is right and fair for the family.

      @@NobodyC13 Exactly. His anger isn't exactly "anger", it's just protectiveness. Which makes total sense because someone else also pointed out that Fear is almost second-in-command in Dad's mind. Mum's leading emotion is "Empathy" rather than sadness, to better emphasize and understand her daughter. And Mum's Sadness is rational, not a weeping mess like Riley's.

      emotions sort of generally mellow as we get older. Anger is hopefully less irrational, easier to be reigned in and better expressed, fear less all consuming, sadness less complete despair, joy less excitement and more contentment, and disgust something easier to push aside and less complete aversion. Most of the time, at least. And during things like puberty and similar hormonal changes or effects where all emotions are heightened, I’ve seen others feel and have felt kind of childish about how consuming emotions are and how they’re expressed.

      It's also very easy to see what Anxiety was trying to do: make a Riley that believes in self improvement, works hard, has cool friends, and is someone that others will look up to. When the new sense of self said "I'm not good enough", Anxiety was shocked that that's what the result was, and made her quickly fly into a panic trying to fix it.

    One of my favorite little details is near the beginning, when Riley overhears the highschoolers talking about her, and Anxiety flips out thinking that they now hate Riley or whatever, but if you (the viewer) actually listen to what the highschoolers are saying, they have no distain towards Riley at all, and are actually just joking about how they were just as immature when they were younger.

    Envy is a different type than what we're used to seeing with it in most media. The Envy we see in the movie is the kind where it says "I love that, I want what you have, so I'm gonna do what I can to make myself have that"

    • @stxrstruck6755

      Yes! That's how I took her interpretation of Envy and I love it honestly. Envy can get mixed up wit Jealousy very easily, and they are very similar. But it looks like Riley's Envy is the "You have this, and I like it, so I'll work hard to get just like you" and not "You have something I want and I don't like it."
      Envy doesn't have to be a negative emotion 24/7 because it can push people to better themselves when the feeling comes up. That's kinda one of the points of inside out 1 & 2, right? Every emotion has its time and place, but too much of one is bad.

    I reeeally loved Anxiety's characterisation in this movie. When she hears that her efforts have led to Riley's new belief "I'm not good enough" she looks so shocked and confused, because that's not what she wanted at all! She just wanted to protect her! It's such a wonderful way of understanding anxiety (which in itself is an emotion, not a disorder) but also the possible consequences of it taking over.

    • @terrycore

      I really like that aspect too because it shows that anxiety serves a function and wants the best, but cannot do good without being balanced with other emotions/ being questioned. Envy has 2 types, malicious and benign. Benign envy is the good one and it helps you admire and set goals to yourself to achieve it.
    Embarassment acknowledges that you did something wrong, letting anyone know that you don't have to tell them that, and you are trying to fix it.

Anxiety I feel like does a similar thing with me being worried about things like myself or other events/changes in my life, it’s her trying to help me prepare for it…it just want go a little overboard sometimes(although I will say my environment at home doesn’t fully allow me to be anxious and calm down without it being turned negative). But maybe when Elio comes out next year, just a thought, how about we try to make that one a huge success too, you know, let Pixar know that original films can be just as profitable as sequels. I’m someone who experienced a lot of anxiety during my pubescent years and I just want to say that I LOVE how this movie tackles Anxiety as a character. She's an anti-Villian; she disposes of the og emotions and Riley's sense of self, believing it's what needs to be done to protect her. Anxiety doesn't need to be defeated, she needs to be stopped from her current course, managed and, really, taken care of and loved, and the movie does just that. The end scene where Joy sits Anxiety down in her massage chair and gives her some tea (anxie-tea hehe) just warms my heart. Anyway, I loved Inside Out 2, I was crying throughout the entire climax.

      It's kind of like when Ned's Declassified discussed stress using iTeacher (the teacher that teaches from home using a webcam). She says stress isn't inherently "bad;" it can actually be good because it's your body sending signals to tell you you need motivation or you need to make some lifestyle changes. However, she admits the potential to be overwhelmed by stress if you don't manage it properly (with her current situation as a result since her past as a go-getter led her to never leave her house).

      @@coralmaynard4876Many reasons why I love this part too.
      It's an step forward in Joy's character. Before then we saw Joy as the toxic positivity, but now she learned how to redirect what sound like negative emotions into good outcomes. Like the beginning hockey scene that puts the og 5 in full display of their roles. Same goes with all the other new 5 emotions.
      Embarrassment can be redirected into humility or flustered or even love.
      Envy can be redirected into ambition/be the one who sets up the goal and even push to improve Riley to reach that goal.
      Ennui can be redirected into relaxation. Like if Riley is ever in a state of overworking her body, Ennui can step in as a way to signal Riley "take a chill pill" or relax. Or even meditate (think nothing, do nothing, the Power of Nothingness in SF basically.)
      Nostalgia.. well she's just constantly kept in the cellar. But I can tell eventually, once Riley has kids or friends who ask about her past, Nostalgia is jumping in to fulfill her role. Negative Nostalgia would be always being stuck in the past after all. Nostalgia can be redirected into a bonding experience. Like say your kid suddenly wants to play a game you used to play as a kid.
      I just love that's how Joy treats them all.. and makes me wish Pixar makes a mini series on this to give the emotions more light or see the positive sides of them in action.

They do such a good job of ensuring that Riley’s actions are her own, and connect back to her faults from the first movie and the second one, she’s a fleshed out three dimensional character and everything she does feels like it was written to make sure it makes sense from the perspective of making like a film completely outside her head in addition to making sense as being done by the characters guiding her around.

      @shapesnatch1341 5 месяцев назад +39

      That's what I've been saying! While I didn't dislike her in the first movie, she definately came across as more of a plot device rather than a character.
      Inside Out 2 completely fixes that, making her into a really likeable and relatable character. And since they put so much more into Riley herself in this film, it makes everything happening much more impactful. Like at the end when she's panicing, grabbing her chest and hyperventilating. It really makes you feel for her and makes you so much more invested in seeing her get through it.

    • @thirdcoinedge
      @thirdcoinedge 5 месяцев назад +30

      @shapesnatch1341 There’s also the subtle element of the emotions directly controlling less of Riley's actions now that her sense of self has been developed, so her greater agency in the plot is reflective of her gradual maturity and eventual control over her emotions. It's less of a child being piloted by their emotions, and now more of emotions having an input in a person's actions, which is why Anxiety's obsessive control over the formation of Riley's new self is so unhealthy.

    I think my favorite part of these two movies is that the emotions take over and bicker in such a natural way that still feels realistic with the reactions of an actual human being.
    Like, viewing this from an outside perspective, Riley’s just a normal, albeit socially awkward person who’s trying too hard to look cool. All her actions still feel human, despite the fact that everything is piloted and guided by what is essentially a goofy group of misfit people in her head.
    With a concept like this, I feel like it’s so easy to just do dumb funny over exaggerated mood swing humor, with Riley just constantly switching between whatever emotions trying to pilot her, but no. They made it feel natural. Hell, they even managed to make an explanation for mood swings, which I for some reason found it funnier then I think I should’ve, lmao.

You can see it with the five original emotions where Panic and Anger have more exaggerated designs while Joy, Disgust and Sadness kinda just all look like normal people with different colors. But Anxiety does not look like a normal person with a different color. She's the most exaggerated one of them all and I love it.

    In regards to what purpose the other emotions serve for Riley’s wellbeing:
    Envy: Ensures Riley feels welcome and a part of the friend groups she’s in (Stick with me on this, I’m gonna to come back to her)
    Embarrassment: Gives Riley the ability to self-reflect so that she can learn from her mistakes
    Ennui: Allows Riley to relax and not constantly get involved in EVERY situation presented to her 24/7 (Again, stick with me)
    I know a big issue people have with the new emotions is that unlike Anxiety and the originals, they don’t seem to serve a purpose. And that may largely be due to the fact that most of these new emotions (the most often brought up being Envy and Ennui) are not being represented accurately. However, I feel that these new emotions ARE represented not necessarily accurately, but in an important way nonetheless.
    When most people think of Envy, they think of the negative traits that come with it (jealousy, brash decisions to fit in, etc.). But for a film like Inside Out 2, it’s important to highlight the positives aspects of feeling Envious, hence why I feel that this “misrepresentation” of Envy doesn’t really hinder her character, but instead gives the audience a reason to appreciate Envy despite the negative connotations surrounding her character.
    The same arguments can be made for Ennui and Embarrassment, but I’ve already spoken enough about this topic and hope my point comes across.
    Either way, Inside Out 2 was an absolute delight for me and felt like the perfect follow up to a movie deserving of said follow up. Of course, the future of Pixar after Docter’s interview is questionable, but like Cellspex, it’s important to appreciate what’s in front of us now. And I’ve gotta say, there is certainly a lot to look forward to this year (The Wild Robot looks amazing and Arcane S2 will surely be phenomenal)
    All in all, IO2 has set the gold standard for what the inevitable tsunami of Pixar sequels should strive to be (imo), and while I’d love to have more original stories and less “relatable movies” going forward, I’m happy to say that IO2 was a great way to finally get myself back into the movie theater.
    TL;DR- Inside Out 2 is awesome, def recommend. Through all the lows, there’s a lot to look forward to. Everything will be okay, you’ve just gotta believe. Good night, Tristate Area

    I don’t know if it’s just me, but I really liked this movie more than the first one. It’s funny that both films pretty much have a similar setup and conclusion, but what makes Inside Out 2 more emotionally impactful for me is the execution of its story and characters. This sequel commits to a more stable balancing act between Riley’s plot and the plot with her emotions, Anger and Fear and Disgust truly feel like important members in the ensemble instead of just existing with Joy and Sadness, and I adore this movie’s message of embracing the complex and confusing emotions that we feel, but not letting them completely define us for who we are. Human emotions are extremely layered and a lot more mysterious than some would think, and I think Inside Out 2, just like its predecessor, was able to portray that in a way that’s palatable for audiences of every age to understand.

    Tbh imo I like how they didnt really treated the new, seemingly negative emotions, as just negatives, keeping up with the last movie's theme. Anixiety allows you to keep mindful on the future while also making sure you dont forget things, envy at its purest form (wanting things others have to one self) helps give you ambition, embarrasmente allows you to learn from past mistakes and Ennui is helpful to disconnect from reality, and she does work as the straight man to anxiety and envy (legit if she wasnt there the chaos would had ensued faster)
    Also funnily enough, Ennui, Anxiety and Embarrasment would had being the perfect counter to the idea of running away. Ennui is the voice of reason and is very introspective, and would had worked a a temporary base emotion that isnt as chaotic in the meantime Joy and sadness came back, embarrasment would had made Riley think twice over how it would reflect on her, and Anxiety would catastrophise that idea 10 times over before it drops dead on the ground

    SPOILERS FOR INSIDE OUT 2 BELOW:
    I think the thing I love MOST about Inside Out 2 is how it sort of "deconstructs" the first movie in how it depicted the Emotions being "pilots" that literally control Riley and who she is (to an extent), without it feeling at all like it “breaks the rules/worldbuilding” established up til now; instead feeling more like a “recontextualization” of what the first film depicted, if you will.
    Hell, even Riley “calling out” to Joy in the end (as evidenced by Sadness saying “Riley wants you”) is another BRILLIANT recontextulization of the first movie: explaining why Sadness kept “interfering” with Joy trying to keep Riley happy in a way that she couldn't explain/understand why, heavily implying it was Riley WANTING to be sad and Sadness was just (unknowingly) acting on instinct, further implying that Joy really WAS putting her in denial (aka blind optimism); Sadness being the one to tell Joy to go to Riley in the end of Inside Out 2 is further evident of this fact IMO.

    However I do appreciate the realistic depiction of it as it shows the staff once again did their homework with this. I also like how Riley’s friends went to help her on it. Reminds me of when my friends, family and even complete strangers would help me calm down from mine own. And I’m serious on the last one. Like I had a breakdown in front of Lisa Ortiz because my day at the con was going awful and she quickly got up from behind her table to go over to me to help calm me down. inside out has always been an important movie to people who have DID/OSDD/etc, with the emotions being able to be read as alters. inside out 2 interestingly enough is both less and more plural depending on how you read it. the sense of self was really interesting because as a system we don't just have one of those, we have many. on the other hand, the emotions were even more like alters this time around, with anxiety in particular acting like a persecutor. a persecutor is an alter who hurts the rest of the system, and they're often depicted as monstrous, but most often they are like anxiety is in this film, well meaning. this film being able to be read as either a plural or singlet experience is great because it shows off the fact that the behavior of a persecutor in a system is equivalent to self destructive behavior in a singlet, not them just being evil or something. so yeah, we really really liked this movie!

Since everyone felt disappointed at DreamWorks after releasing mid or bad movies after Puss in Boots 2… I really think everyone should stop putting their expectations too high.

    The new emotions were a riot to watch, especially with how well the film handled Anxiety. I love how it portrayed the orange muppet as a well-intentioned extremist that wanted to help Riley the best she could, only to eventually realize the error of her ways and work together with Joy's crew.
    The only major thing that held this movie back for me was how they recycled several plot points from its predecessor. This includes some circumstance causing Joy and at least one other emotion to exit the control room, returning a MacGuffin back to said control room, Riley distancing herself from loved ones and making poor choices before reconciling with those closest to her, and Joy/Anxiety learning to accept help from emotions they believed were causing trouble. But outside of that one major issue, I thought the movie was fun and succeeded in discussing its themes.

I do not think the same can be said for embarrassment. I think he had both purpose in the story and a contributor to riley's brain in negating negative behavior and putting a stop to it.

As someone who struggles with feeling not good enough constantly, to the point that it sabotages my joy in things that I normally enjoy, this movie came for me personally. Something I think most people don’t realize about Joy looking at memories and going “What am I missing?” is supposed to be a parallel of the first movie where she looks through the core memory and sees that sadness helped make the situation joyful. Joy looks at all the discarded memories to see if she is “missing something” like she did in the first movie. It’s not the writers talking to themselves going “What are we gonna do?” It’s a callback to the first film.

    I’d say the reason they don’t say directly what Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment do is because they instead *show* us what they do throughout the movie.
    Ennui helps Riley keep her cool, Embarrassment prevents Riley from making a fool of herself, and Envy…drives her ambition? I don’t know, we didn’t get a lot about her.

    The Inside Out movies and especially this one are so great because it appeals to literally everyone, from kids to adults. I’d argue adults would get even more out of them because of their complex narrative about mind systematics that would fly over most kids’ heads. They’re things that are more appreciated as we grow up, and from the way they have told Riley’s stories so far they’re going to be timeless classics easily.

I’ve struggled with severe anxiety for a huge chunk of my life and related heavily to some of the stuff like it taking over the imagination and keeping you up on the what if’s, the panic attacks, and the feeling of not being good enough despite all your efforts. My interpretation of the envy in the movie leaned less into the jealousy traits and more into the ambition traits that come with envy as an emotion. I don’t think that necessarily makes it less accurate to the emotion. It’s just a different take because most media takes it as pure jealousy. I also saw Ennui as the opposite of anxiety purpose wise. Where anxiety worried about what to say and how it would affect them down the road Ennui decided to just have Riley say nothing and nod along since she doesn’t always need to respond to everything. While I agree nothing can really beat the first movie, I really liked the new emotions presented and the sequel as a whole still left me crying at the end.

    Inside Out 2 feels so much smaller. The "Sarcasm" and "Brainstorm" are great world building, but they don't work too well as roadblocks because they aren't really a result of Riley's conflicting emotions. They're just a result of Riley growing up/literally thinking! (In the first movie, the roadblocks were Riley as a person breaking apart). Good movie- that I wish didn't try to copy the same formula of the first movie and would have expressed its strong themes in a better way. Great humor, themes, and world building, but bad plot, and too fast paced so it's emotional beats felt...rushed, and didn’t hit that hard

    SPOILER ALERT: 🚨
    The scene where Riley calls to Joy is now becoming one of my all-time favorite Pixar moments. It was such a beautiful surprise, we always saw Riley’s emotions controlling her actions, but we’ve never seen Riley herself consciously call to her emotions, culminating in the movie’s themes of self-awareness. It perfectly illustrates what was going on inside my head watching this scene. Joy is right there with Woody as my favorite Pixar character, and to see her have that moment with Riley brought me to tears. Mirroring the beginning of the first movie, it’s a brilliant depiction of how much Riley has matured as a person and how far Joy has progressed as a character.
    Pixar doesn’t always treat their other franchises in the way they probably should, but it seems they really care about this one, Inside Out just feels so genuine. I was immensely satisfied with the sequel, it truly felt like a continuation of the first one rather than just a simple rehash. I can totally see myself watching 1 & 2 back-to-back as one movie.

    This movie is by far Pixar's best sequel in quite a long time. I love the way this movie just keeps on expanding the ongoing world building inside Riley's head, and on top of that, this movie honestly is better at making Riley her own character rather than the puppet of the emotions. The best part is that the emotions doesn't really fall into the same trap in the first movie as can be seen from the "broken" control scene, Anxiety had a legit reason to take over the controls because Riley's future is basically uncertain and they needed plans, Joy wanting to enjoy all the good memories for now ends up kinda blindsiding her from the future. It's a very enjoyable watch for me.

    I love this movie. Anxiety especially.
    my biggest complaint is they had a really good idea showing that joy and anxiety were doing the same thing (shaping Rileys mind in a specific way), but we never see the problems with Joy's way. I didn't realize what Joy was doing was bad until they made the connection at the end.
    "being a winner/good friend" are pretty positive things, but I think the movie missed the opportunity to show that putting up this high standard would only make her crash if she was ever not a good friend/winner. All the scenes where she is a bad friend/messes up are when she already had her sense of self removed so it doesn't read as Joy setting her up to fail, but instead Anxiety mainly being the one driving Riley to a worse off state.
    maybe anxiety could have added a core to the beliefs that would have rippled and shown how fragile Rileys sense of self was (maybe the fact that it was so easy to remove was the representation of that). Anywho. I loved this movie and the new emotions, but ended up finding Joy to be weaker this time around. *insert quote about joy fading with age here*

    • @dustymcwari4468
      @dustymcwari4468 5 месяцев назад +1

      From how I see it, the thing with that is that Joy realized she's been making Riley live a happy lie all this time by artificially removing every bad moment she had in her life from her beliefs, making her think she was pure and free of any flaws, blissfully ignorant, which made her struggle fitting in at the camp at first because she never saw herself as in need of any improvements, which got her into trouble because everyone else could see said flaws very clearly, that wake up call let Anxiety take over
      Which is the complete opposite to Anxiety's problem, in her mission of making Riley the best version of herself, she wanted Riley to quit ignoring her flaws and work hard to refine where she was lacking most, which on paper sounds nice, and at first it was working, but she ended up making Riley not just acknowledge her flaws, but be overly fixated in them, especially when that obsession to be the best began making her commit even bigger mistakes and started making her hurt the people she treasured and admired most because Anxiety's approach was being way too cold, risky, and self-centered, that only made Riley see herself in a very negative light overall, that's why neither side was in the right, which Joy realized they were not letting Riley accept herself for who she really is as a whole, and that needed to change asap

    • @Gatekid3

    Actually envy is perfectly accurate. Envy as a verb is an action where you desire a certain quality or attribute that someone else has, it isn't nessecarally out of spite or jealousy unless used as a noun.
    For example let's say someone has gender envy. There's no mallace twoards the individual they envy but they sure do wish they had that attribute aswell.
    Envy and Disgust/Anger creating a mixed emotion is likely more close to that notion of jealousy. But what's important to the story is that Envy and Anxiety compliment each other by enabling some of the negative aspects of both emotions.

    The other bit in imagination land was mount crushmore. Probably a subtle hint on what else the imagination focuses on as a teen/adult. Beyond catastrophizing everything.
    On hot people, the things we want to do with them and all the outfits we want to see them in. We would focus on something that gives us a more adult joy versus the joy from fantasizing of pretending to be a knight or a superhero or something. I figured mount crushmore was the censor approved indicator of a teenage imagination.
