    Excellent explanation and graphics. First time I have actually understood what happens when the bend of the mast is adjusted.

    How I know Paul and Sheryl are brilliant? I've sailed only once, then forgot about it for ten years, then stumbled upon Distant Shores video on RUclips. After a week of watching your videos for fun, I've already considered buying my first Elan 11m, but then remembered I aught to know how to sail. And when I was trying to find, I've stumbled again on your videos where you teach exactly what I wanted to know.
    Simply brilliant!

    Good to see her with a decent heal and some nice fast sailing, using that twin rudder system well - as intended.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, with the twin rudders you always have a rudder dug in well even if there is a lot of heel. It makes the boat feel very safe.

    Our “new” boat has a Selden in-mast furler and we’ve only sailed her a few times as we’re a little intimidated by it. This video will be a huge help. Thank you.

    Nice video, thanks for sharing. We have the same issue with getting up to the leech tensioner, tied an extension onto it so we don’t have to stand on the cockpit table to set it. Happy and safe journey on your upcoming crossing.

    So very beautiful and informative :-) All in one great video. Thanks again! We also went for the comfort sail and was never in a hurry. Afterfall, it's sailing not jet racing and we always got enough rough sailing when bad weather hit.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks, Captain Mark. We thought about going with in-mast furling a lot before making the decision and have no regrets. The Elvstrom sails hold their shape well and the Selden Mast system has a good test record. We're still new to it but love it. We're sailing more since it's so easy to reef and unreef by one person on watch.

      I agree with you 110% especially at my age now. What is great is one person can easily handle it so if a husband falls overboard then the wife can easily take is all sail, turn the engine on and have total control over the boat and situation in the most rapid manner possible. Great safety feature for sure!

    so I was sailing with my buddy doing a video and he started climbing around the rigging showing how he was going to make things better but he slipped and fell off the boat and we never seen him again. Now I got a nice boat! :-)

    Very good video.
    Just a few things.
    Check the tension of the luffextrusion inside the mast. Read the manual for advice. They often tend to be a bit slack.
    Also take notice of the capshrouds when thightening the backstay. When the top of the mast is bent backwards the distance of the two fixingpoints for the capshrouds are shorter so the capshrouds on a swept spreader rig will perhaps be a bit too slack. Keep an eye on the lee cap so it is not too loose.
    Put markers on the backstay for max pull on the tensioner.
    If the mainsail has problems to unfurl, aftleach nearly jams. Try to adjust the stopper for the outhaulslider a bit forward to create more pull on the aftleach.
    Safe sailing!

    Very nice. The more wind you have the more everything is moving aft (mast top by tensioning the backstay and the genoa lead). At least this is how I remember it every time 😉
    BTW: very good graphics that makes it so clear what happens! Still images are never so explanatory.

    Great video. Thanks. I learnt so much while getting a great closeup of your new cockpit arch which I’m quite excited about and it helps me determine how to build that feature into our S135. A question for your Elvstrom expert, I have seen in a video on a HR 54 vertical expanded pockets in the leading edge of the jib. Why are they there and what do they do? Have you used your swing keel much yet?

    Hi Paul! Absolutely great video!!! Thanks for this. But I didn’t catch the idea of “slack shrouds”. Which of them are allowed to be slack? As I understood it is OK when leeward shrouds are slack? Am i correct?

  • @yairkeren6357

    Tnx for a super video. There is a con against vertical battens , claiming furling problems. What is your experience?

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  4 года назад

      The idea of vertical battens on an in-mast furling mainsail is to prevent creases from forming in the sail when furling it in which could cause a jam, so vertical battens are there to help prevent furling problems, Yair, they're not really to help the performance of the sail, as we understand it.

    Gibraltar is indeed a special place. I was surprised to see that the road was crossing the runway just as it did back in the eighties.
    Did they change the stamp in the passport? B4 it was a funny/not a very diplomatic stamp "Welcome to GIB" at the size of half the side on the passport. And the immigration officer asked us if we knew what GIB stod for. Well, Gibraltar? He said -No, God In Bed.

      Not our usual heeling angle for comfortable cruising 😊and it made filming rather exciting! This was a complicated shoot since we wanted good wind for sailing but that means dealing with wind noise in audio and it makes it risky for the camera operator. We were using 5 microphones and 3 cameras for this video which also made editing complex. Fun!

    Do you think it is allowed to manipulate quite often the aft rig to bend aft the mast since I didn’t touch on my boat (I thought it is a rigger specialist work)
    I have a furling main sail on my Bavaria 46 do you think it is possible to install a furling one with batten?

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Antoine! Yes I think it’s designed to adjust bend but not too much with a furling mast. And yes i think the vertical batten mains are designed to fit the Selden mast on your Bavaria
