The Basics of Figure Drawing (The EASY way to draw figures)

  • In this video I show you how to draw fashion figures in different poses - starting from the very basics. I am focused on gesture drawing using loose lines and basic sketching. The idea here is to tap into your inner child - how did you draw figures when you were a kid? It is all about shapes and getting the generalized shape.
Even though things start out "sketchy" when I draw, I keep going, I try new things and I am having fun (this is the most important aspect of learning how to draw). This is my personal process, how I love to draw figures and how I focus on loose lines and gestures as well as how I adjust the fashion sketch as I go.
I am using a sharpie, gel pens and Arrtx acrylic markers.

I love your work. And I admire your instructional skills: camera work (I can see this!); full video not a God-awful short that I can't follow because I can't slow it down like I do a video; clear communication. AND the fact that you even bother - meaning you seem to believe that yes, your viewers CAN do this! And I feel that "can do" energy. I'm already 7 days into Inkttober (my second year) and I love following your style. Thank you for sharing and facilitating growth in these skills.

So fun to try these, I’ve never drawn a face in my life, but I’m finding this loose style a blast. I’ve drawn some funny looking ladies, but they ooze personality😂

Thank you!! ❤️ I am so glad you enjoy them. I love quirky drawings much more than traditional type drawing, they are absolutely fun to create! Keep on sketching!!!

I’ve stayed far away from faces and figures in my art practice, but you make it seem like I may be able to come up with something I like. Thank you- I’m going to branch out!

To me your drawings are perfection of sketching. I mean it as
"True perfection has to be imperfect
I know it sounds foolish, but it's true"
as Noel Gallagher sings in his Oasis classic and the man really knows what he's talking about. So yeah, you are both on point here❤❤❤
I will be trying to draw again and looking forward to more of your videos as I absolutely love them ❤️❤️❤️

I just found your channel tonight, as I was preparing pages for handbound books/art journals on Dior's fashion history! I usually just sketch the gown or fashion piece, but I love your figure drawings, faces, and loose-fun-bold sketches!! And thank you for reminding me it's Inktober! So now I feel emboldened and brave enough to include my uglier practice sketches into the books. I'll be binge watching your channel now, for the coming weeks, I'm sure! Thanks for the inspiration and courage! Just keep going...no need for perfection!

I find that using a mannequin for practicing figure drawing helps me get the body proportions more or less accurate. Do you ever use a mannequin for your sketches? Thank you.

I used to have one - a mini wooden figure but I never used it. What kind do you use?

I never drew as a kid. I only colored in coloring books with crayons but I remember outlining everything. I never colored outside the lines so I think that still is with me….perfectionism. I struggle with that so that’s the reason I watch you. You are so loose and free. I went to school a very long time ago where we were taught that everything had to be perfect. Your art is beautiful….just like you.

@@jerrygill4828 it is comments like yours that have made me feel brave enough to share my process on RUclips. I always thought I had to make perfect drawings and paintings in order to be considered a real "artist" but I never enjoyed it, so I kept my art to myself. I finally got tired of being on instagram because people only shared their masterpieces and not the weird or imperfect stuff. I never imagined I would meet so many like minded people on RUclips in the comment section. Thank you so much for your lovely comment it warms my heart and pushes me forward to continue to share my process.

@@KristaIreneArt I have a 12" wooden mannequin that I purchased at an art store many years ago. It comes in handy when drawing figures. The average body is supposed to be like 8 heads long.

Love your art, every thing is very precise in an art class, I want scruffy, whimsical, like some others I never did art as a child so am well behind the eight ball, starting at 68 now 71 and just enjoying the loose things whether it be, flowers, and now your lovely ladies, thank you so much.

That's definitely not how I drew people as a kid (or later as an adult). Those drawings were the stickmen level I'm afraid😀 I gave up and was so scared to return to drawing people after that sad experience and overcomplicated books and tutorials I've seen, but after your videos I now have a bit of newly found confidence to try again, so thanks a million for this🥹❤

Every book I have found on drawing people is a combination of specific measurements and rules and it made drawing less enjoyable. I am so glad people like my tutorials. Sometimes I wonder how my videos and artwork will be received so I appreciate comments. Thank you!
