  • Taylor Swift could be the best lyricist in music right now and she shows that off on this amazingly good "surprise" album. Production, vocals and words all in harmony in this album which both rhymes with and completely surpasses "Folklore".

I think what he's seeking is the depth of a song. NBNC is a pretty straightforward story with a twist. That's what I think. For me though, NBNC is amazing. Great storytelling, great ambience and production, but a li'l disappointed that she used HAIM as how she used the Chicks from SYGB. I was expecting a verse with a layer of Tswift's voice like a dialogue with a rhythm.

It's a good jam, it's well structured and well delivered, but for me personally it feels too dark for the album, and it especially feels weird being in the same album with ivy, if ivy wasn't in this album I'd feel less weird about it.
Maybe the uneasiness caused from these two being on the same album was intentional, it certainly intensifies the discomfort I feel listening to both of them.

No Body, No Crime - I agree that the song isn't lyrically on the same level as others on this album, but I'm amazed by how many reviewers have completely missed the fact that two murders occurred in that song. First the friend says she'll confront the husband about his infidelity, then she disappears, the husband moves in his mistress, and the narrator (Taylor) decides to do something about it when the police can't prove he killed his wife. She kills him and frames the mistress, who had taken out a life insurance policy. I find the ending interesting - the police now think the husband killed the wife, the mistress killed the husband, and the mistress thinks the narrator did it, but no one can prove anything. I like it for a couple of reasons - it's cleverly patterned after true crime podcasts Taylor has said she listens to, so she essentially wrote a murder mystery in song. The second reason is because it's a nod to a song from The Chicks called Goodbye Earl. It might be out of place on this album, but I think it's fun that she dabbled in outlaw country and named the victim after Este Haim, who then sang on it with her.
It's been so difficult to choose a favorite song on this album. Right now I love 'Tis the Damn Season and Cowboy Like Me. They're so story based that I find myself thinking of the characters after I finish listening. At this point, I think she might be able to write a novel or a book of poetry, or even script a Netflix series. Definitely the best lyricist putting out music right now. I also love Happiness, Ivy and Evermore in particular, though I really love all of them. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts too - it's hard to find people who dive deep on lyricism.

@@divelea I agree! I understand what the Professor is saying about it not being the same style of song as the rest of these albums. But I think it was a cleverly written song about murder with a little twist on who committed it. You were wondering how Taylor can still be so grounded with her writing while being such a rich and adored superstar. I don't claim to know how she managed to stay like that but I find, from the interviews I see and read and from the stories of common people who get to meet her (I also don't claim to know her but from what I can tell), that she has stayed quite a genuine and humble person. Add to that her emotional intelligence and a mild case of anxious personality (that I relate to) and she can paint the most relatable and heartbreaking experiences in her songs. Things that may seem small but that, for me, show the true colors of a person, like how when she talks to you she always gives you 100% of her attention, always thanking and acknowledging the people who don't usually get that recognition (her dancers, the people who build her stages during tours, the people who ensure security during concerts etc.), always meeting her fans for free after events. I'm not fogetting that she's a millionaire with jets and too much fame to handle but she also didn't forget her humanity. And this is also why her fans (as in more than a casual listener) love her so much and protect her so fervently: they see this genuinely good person that has been labelled a pop commercial product similar to Britney Spears that has received many waves of hate for any and everything she does - the hate was so rabid that it caused her to go into hiding for a couple of years, no activity online, nothing. So sometimes, the fans overcorrect with the defending.

Never be so clever, you forget to be kind'' so it sums up perfectly how functional her parents were raising her. like you said, small but shows the true colors of that person. she's lucky enough to have fuctional purely sane parents.

Enjoyed your words but I'm sad that 'Cowboy Like Me' did not resonate for you. I think it's very tender and emotional. Her conflict between a cold life stealing love and the desire for love herself and her awareness of wanting both conflicting things was poignantly displayed. I read the line "I'm never gonna love again" in 2 ways. She realizes she can't commit to love or, that she actually found the love and doesn't need to love again (my wish maybe). My favorite on the album.

It’s the most under appreciated song on the album. Two morally ambiguous people meet at some fancy party and are surprised to fall in love. Is it real? Are they conning each other or finally finding the real thing? How will they ever know? The song starts with the word “and”! It’s lyrically as good as anything on the album and basically a mini novel. And underneath all of that is the languorous, sexy pace and the slow “I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve” with Marcus Mumford. Like they’re stalking each other musically. It’s so brilliant.

Hi! I just thought I'd mention the Great Gatsby references in Happiness, since you said you like it so much. Taylor said she read a lot of classic literature in lockdown and in Happiness she alludes to the Great Gatsby twice. Once when she says she hopes her ex's new girlfriend will be a 'beautiful fool' - a quote said by Daisy about her daughter in the Great Gatsby - "I hope she’ll be a fool-that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool". The 'green light' of forgiveness she mentions is a reference to the recurring theme of the green light that Gatsby is looking for in Fiitzgerald's novel. :)

I agree with most of what you said (and I am a swiftie), but I disagree with the fact that she doesn’t shine as a lyricist when she speaks about her own life. Her superpower is that she is capable of writing her life experience and still make us relate to it. She writes complicated feelings using simple words. I get you don’t relate to it bc you are in a different demographic than who it is intended to doesn’t make it any less valuable than her novel storytelling on folklore and evermore. You say her pop star life is irrelevant but understanding it is the key to see the value in her entire discography.
Lastly, a few times through the video you make her sound very shallow ( the stella coat, the champagne problems expectations) but taylor has never been one to be over materialistic or show wealth like other celebs (kardashians, cardi b etc), especially in her lyrics. She focuses on her feelings, she has never written about accomplishing tangible assets.

Songs with acceptable and unacceptable emotions help people to see their emotions objectively. It often is the first time their emotions are front and center to deal with them. Maybe if more people could be helped with introspection to their deep or hidden feelings, there would be less abuse and more healing. Just because you may not relate to all the emotions in each song doesn’t mean someone else will not find it helpful. Music is for everyone and not just for a few.

It's funny how you interpret the lyric "life was a willow and it bent right to your wind" as talking about a man who is a brute force. I was actually thinking about the same lyric and wondering why she didn't use the expression " bent to your will", this is how I was mistakenly singing it in my mind at the beginning. Then I thought that maybe that's the whole point, that she used "wind" rather than "will" in order to suggest that he is strong, maybe charismatic but not excessively forcefull. Similarly, I noticed and appreciated her using "You belong with me" in the eponymous song instead of "You belong to me", so looking for a partnership rather than expressing possessiveness. As she is very attentive to details, most things she puts into her art are thought out carefully. But this is just my opinion so who knows. 😊

I believe her “signature” as an artist is that she is able to express and reflect feelings so well with her songwriting, her voice, the way she stares at you while singing and her eyes shining with the emotion of the song. I wasn’t really into her before folklore era but that album made me realise how much of an artistic ability she has unlike the other mainstream singers. She does what she does because she likes music.

Truly some of the most interesting reviews I have come across. I enjoy the approach to albums not as just albums -- things to market and get played on radios and streaming platforms -- but as art, which takes a view that expands beyond just analyzing the music, to look at things like the cultural and emotional impact of the work. Where’s the Reputation review??? Really any reviews of older Taylor Swift albums - I would love to hear Professor Skye's take on them! Maybe Red, where she was basically experimenting with the idea of pop?

LOVE that analogy with novels! Forgive the pun but that's a very novel idea to me that had never occurred. :) If you haven't heard her pre-pop days I think you'd really enjoy them. I like the pop but I LOOOOOOVE this type of music so much more. The Red album is a fave. I think what you're finding with Taylor is what all the fans love- she has this crazy ability to connect with people's life stories in a way that makes you feel less alone.

Your Bon Iver impression killed me 😂. Love this analysis, even if it differs from my own thoughts and feelings on the album. I think “cowboy like me” is a really fantastic track, it feels incredibly mature to me. This is a weird comparison but I do think Sting’s ability to create and write narrative (novel-esque) songs with these interesting characters is a really unique and comparable talent ,to the type of writing that Taylor displays. I think this ability really sets apart what makes someone elevate from a songwriter to an artist.

"Aggressively honky" made me belly laugh. Love your thoughts and this review. You call it like you see it. Her pop stardom does overshadow her immense talent. I doubt people like Dressner would work with her if she wasn't talented. The two of them created beautiful soundscapes. The songs are like movies, they have real narratives, something sorely missing from popular music. Thank you! Please stay safe and healthy! 😊

I look at No Body, No Crime as a script for an episode of Law and Order. A show Taylor has long been a fan of and has probably indulged in a bit of binge-watching during this period of quarantine. Not every song has to speak to every person, this one obviously didn't speak to you. It does not make it a "bad" or "unworthy" song it just makes it one you didn't personally connect with.
I enjoyed your review overall. One thing I would challenge you on and that is Taylor's back catalog. I am older and also a new fan of her music. I not only don't know whom she's dated in the past, but I also don't care. Red is an amazingly strong album lyrically. It is a young person coming of age and dealing with the intensity of their first real relationship. It's not just the heartbreak, which is beautifully expressed, but also the experience of how scary it can be to be so vulnerable and discovering how intense an emotion love is. Red isn't the only album that has some amazing lyrical content on it either. I just think you are doing her a disservice when you dismiss her past albums based solely on them being autobiographical.

From my own point of view, I think we are REdiscovering Taylor's true artistic nature. We got to know her as a country artist and I believe she's coming back to those roots. She had to go through all the albums she has yet produced to finally detach herself from the persona the music industry created for her and show lastly her true colours to the world.

So much to unpack here… where to start 😂. First it was one of the most interesting reaction/reviews of this album. Like many comments here, (by the way I have never seen so many long thoughtful comments on a video on YT EVER so congratulations for getting viewers to do that.
Second, I am a much older Swiftie. I did not go thru the things she wrote about in her early albums at same time as many of her original Swifties did. I thought she had some good songs but I was so past teenage angst at that point in my life. I started paying attention with Red a little more and became more invested by 1989. I always knew she had a folklore/evermore in her but honestly thought we would never get it- and we got 2!!! I honestly don’t know where she goes from these two because I don’t think anything can top them. But she reinvents constantly so who know… I learned a long time ago to never underestimate her.
If you were more familiar with Taylor and her total discography you would know she has a great sense of humor and has done a lot of songs over the years that are tongue in cheek (Blank Space, Shake It Off, Look What You Made Me Do, I Forgot You Existed, etc.) She writes those songs with a wink and Swifties do appreciate them because she often takes what people say about her and then leans into it & writes a song as that character - most of Reputation is an example of that, as is No Body, No Crime. Taylor loves true crime and just wanted to have fun with that (like many of her songs- who writes about it the way she did, and with some tongue in cheek humor). I don’t think she ever saw it as a serious song.
You mentioned people don’t read novels, well, Tolerate It was completely inspired by book/movie Rebecca. She wrote the song from Rebecca’s view. Knowing her inspiration for some of these songs helps you appreciate them even more. But if there was ever a song to accompany that book/movie, Tolerate It is it.
Many people don’t know Taylor has a photographic memory. So she has so much she is retaining as she reads these books, or sees movies that she can then pull from to write these songs. But I can see where having that attribute if you are as big as Taylor can be a nightmare too.
I am off to watch your other reviews.. can’t wait to see what you say about folklore and especially 10 min version of All Too Well.

I honestly think songs like long story short actually do belong and fit right into Taylor swift’s art and the legacy she’s out to put, like we all feel that way at some point in our lives, not all is about love right? If you follow closely her progress on this matter throughout the albums this song perfectly wraps every single lyric of pain, trust issues and grief that she’s felt ever since shake it off if you must (haters coming at her). Not saying your opinion is bad, but could be rather baseless

As a swifte I completely agree with the point you make at 9:15 ! We definitely as a community need to be more open to valid criticisms of her work as she is also just an artist who’s work can be criticized like any others work. I do think this stems from how much she has in the past been criticized for things outside her work that are uncalled for. because of this I think her fans now want to defend her from anything assuming this is where it stems from.

The way pop was slowly disappearing in 2014 then she released 1989. Not only she single handedly revieved pop music, she also brought back the 80's synth sound.

I think no body, no crime was put in that album and is in that certain placing because evermore is an emotional album in a more upbeat tune than folklore.. track #5 in every taylor album is the most hurtful.. no body, no crime is a fun mystery crime song that disconnects you for a moment from heavy emotions and encourages you to focus more on the lyrics and the story because if you think it's the typical crime scene, then think again.. This is Taylor Swift we're talking about.. there's always a twist.. in my opinion as well as everyone else's, it's a "double" murder but since there's no body, there is no crime.. In the 1st verse, Este suspected her husband is cheating; in the 2nd verse, Taylor suspected the husband killed Este because she was missing; in the last verse, Taylor described how she (may or may have not) killed Este's husband with Este's sister as her alibi. But in all of these, there's no proof because there is no body found.. 😏
