Ah, yes, the AM gang on 75 meters. You guys were my first exposure to amateur radio, listening with my (AM) shortwave radio from Houston, Texas back in 1972. Can't wait to get back on the air and join you.
75M Phone is so cool. I grew up in the 1960s listening daily to Don K4KYV and Con W4EBG and all the other guys on 75. Although he's been gone for years, I can still hear Con's voice from Paducah in my head. 73s Dave WA4FXT
I love the way that old radio looks. I am afraid I wouldn't know where to start operating something like that. Those were long gone by the time I got into ham radio. I wish my hf rig sounded that good.
Beautiful rigs there. Reminds me of my SWLing as a kid, when the local hams had a net on 160 AM. I always liked the mode, it's a shame it's not used a lot more where it could be. 73 De Perry
Ohhh so wonderful !!! that's is hamradio old style ! great !!! On my 20 years of hamradio operation unfortunately i have only one opportunity to listening ham operation on AM... many yrs a go on 10Mtrs... from a US ham operating an Hallycrafter rig.... Super ! 73 DX Mario
That's a BW-66E, an RCA modulation monitor used to track the audio level in an AM transmitter. It also has an audio output channel with a very clean, low distortion signal to view on an oscilloscope or to feed an audio amplifier. This gives a more accurate sense of how a station's transmitter is sounding, compared to typical AM receivers, then or now.
Thanks for listening! The warm and inviting sound of AM on shortwave among radio hobbyists has an allure that has kept me hooked for years. People take care to achieve a good sound on both transmit and receive, which is more than can be said for the AM broadcast band and the limitations by choice or chance that it must confront.
Yeah, but the audio from a filter with a gentler shape is exquisite. I grew up with a Hammarlund HQ-129X in my parents' (father's) living room, along with a Johnson Viking II. 73 de KI6DCB
The R390 is significantly better than the SP600. It can hear a more wholesome chunk of signal at its maximum selectivity setting. Shown is an R390A. The mechanical filters undercut the audio quality but their square-wave sort of rolloff make the "A" more practical when conditions are congested.
people are on here saying how great A.M sounds why dont we all form a net and give it a try....??? i would love to have a chat on A.M on any band ..A.M certainly does sound great and with a good audio quality too
Sensitivity is about the same. Other factors make tube radios sound better, in my opinion, than most solid state receivers. For example, the SP600 establishes its selectivity more gently, and its amplifier circuitry has less noise and distortion.
nice radio you've got there mate just seen the video that's a monster size radio but it looks beutiful and well made can you transmitt with it? and I wonder how many watts it pushes out? just outa intrest? good video I must say and it's really nice to see people on here who like the old type of radios it really is take care and best 73's stephen M3SNV from brekfield liverpool england.
@N0rthwestRadio You are in the AM group on 3870 as well? I listen to the round table down there much of the time and might join you guys when I upgrade to General. The receiver I am using is a modern one Icom R-75 hooked up to a 188 foot multiband dipole which seems to work great the carriers typically hit 20 to 30 over S-9!
I want to see what all these guys with rice boxes are going to say when One EPM device goes off and only these receivers and xmiters remain unfried.....SP 600's, R-390/392's and HRo's are going to be like gold....
I see you have an R-390 A. I just bought one that I owned about 20 years ago and It needs alot of work but I am looking forward to getting it going. I would like to see your R-390-A on AM. Maybe you could do a video on that. Thanks for posting. 73 KF0XO
the sound quality is incredible. Reminds me of the sounds that would come from my fathers little shack when I was a kid.. that is really cool.
Classic stuff...real nice console and beautifully restored radios..thanks for posting your video.

Familiar AM voices usually heard on 3880 & 3885 kHz great to see this.

I agree with you. The two in tandem provides the ultimate combination of audio quality, selectivity, and pure boatanchor joy! 73.
AM always sounds really good. This sounds wonderful.
Man I dig Amplitude! It is just so damn romantic. LOL The vintage stuff always sounds so nice. I hang out on 3870 at times. Nice.

I thought about selling my Hammarlund SP-600JX-17. Thanks to you, now I won't part with it. 73.

maybe i posted before, but this a setup id like to own. cheerio and congrats. ct2izo
no "Donald Ducks" here. I only have worked A.M. on 160. A few guys in my neighborhood would work 2 meter A.M. on low power, simplex of course.

Come to think of it I worked a couple of VE3's on 6 meter a.m.
