- You CAN have other cultures head to Japan to tell a story, but there are respectful ways to do that - ignoring history and what we know about it is not one of them.
Ubisoft expect you to consume drivel and be grateful, Ghost of Tsushima existing means that this game does not need to. Especially when it pushes diversity and inclusivity politics that are at once inappropriate and hypocritical in the extreme.
Prepare for a rant.
I'm pretty sure the historical consensus is that he was essentially a pet to Oda Nobunaga.
Honestly, it’s like Ubisoft wants to surpass EA as the most hated gaming company in the world.
Years ago, there was talk about what if Ubisoft made an AC game set in Japan, playing as a ninja rather than a samurai to keep with the assassin theme. I was one of those who really wanted that. I believe that if this was made in the years pre-2020, in the days of Black Flag, Unity and Syndicate, the game would have been at least pretty decent. Of course that never happened yet, and now games like Sekiro and Ghost exist and are much beloved, while Ubisoft seems to have lost its touch.
If Ubi wasn't infested with the current cultural rot, they could still make a good game. Perhaps a ninja in the service of a samurai clan against rival clans hosting (or being influenced by the Templars for whatever scheme) during the Sengoku Period. Or if not the Sengoku Period, why not the Meiji Restoration? Quite sure that there haven't been many games in that period. Perhaps fighting against the Westernization of Japan, along with the Templars. Or hell, maybe even a local assassin in the employ of the Templars, let's change things around a bit.
On the note of The Last Samurai, have you watched Shogun? Not sure if you ever mentioned it before, but surely you must watched it. What do you think in comparison?
Yes! Shogun is a great show :)
It reminds me of a lot of the weirdly vicious Japanophobia that Western game journalists had in the 90s and 00s.
I remember that! Was even prevalent in friends groups, I got called a weirdo for liking Final Fantasy IX...alright dude.
That's French for you, what did you expect.
Snooty elitism: check
Post-Modern stupidity: check
All Ubisoft needs to do now is wave the white flag.
for me it is a missed opportunity for Ubisoft they had a chance to use the most well know heroes Hattori Hanzō or Ishikawa Goemon at least i could see a assassin's creed with Ishikawa Goemon at least there is more records on them that is a lot more reliable
In their own canon Hanzo Hattori was an Assassin and there is an OC in Yamauchi Taka he could have been the MC. Yaksuke could have been a dlc sort of a foreigners view of Feudal Japan whilst the main game is in the eyes of the Feudal Japanese.
I think the Ikko Ikki would be great for an Assassin's Creed game. Badass militant warrior monks that fought against feudal warlords. It also would fit the Assassin's Creed formula better.
Does the studio benefit from a tax thing or something if they tank the game? Like if they lose enough money, do they get some sort of huge write off that will be better than having weak sales?
LIKES FOR THE LIKE GOD; COMMENTS FOR THE COMMENT THRONE!
You're one of the few people to nail it. Couldn't care less about whether he was a samurai or his historical relevance.
It's just distasteful. I got the same 'ick' feeling with RE5, but at least that series is spaghetti fantasy.
Hopefully the backlash to this will signal peak DEI.
Enjoying the 2nd channel content
Yeah, not touching this one.
The problem is, it is historically accurate there was a black samurai in Japan at the time .
But if that upsets you don’t ever watch the anime Afro Samurai or play Nioh .
@@darkzentai7417 it's up for debate whether or not Yasuke was actually a samurai, but he was certainly a real person.
@@knightofcaliban146 regardless of if he was a samurai or not, and I’m playing devils advocate here he’s not going to have as much significance historically, but he will in this game.
But to be fair, not that Ubisoft deserves it, we don’t know what’s going to happen in the game yet .
It could be worse at least it’s not a British colonialist going around killing Japanese whoops nioh .
There’s no evidence saying he was a samurai cope and cry all you want won’t change it
@@okageshadowking3452 what are you talking about crying .
I’m just pointing the facts out they’ve taken a genuine historical character and put him into a video game in the period where he belonged .
Now it’s up for debate if they have taken massive liberties with the character .
Kratos is a fantastic example genuine Greek Demi-God and nothing like what he’s like in the video game should we stop that?
Or Nobunaga a genuine and extremely important Japanese historical character should we stop people taking creative liberties with that character?
While we’re at it, should we just stop creative freedom altogether?
I’ve got nothing against somebody not liking something for their opinion, but I do have something against them not liking it when the reason they don’t like it is factually incorrect .
Firstly at no point do I say in the video that Yasuke did not exist. I point out he DID exist and was a retainer - not a samurai.
I also point out we know next to nothing about him which does give you a lot of leeway. But we also know not a lot about Miyamoto Musashi either, or the figure who was the very real Ghost of Tsushima (which is an actual folk tale) They were used because they were Japanese protagonists and natural fits.
Yasuke is used because it is a power fantasy about a ghetto thug chopping up Japanese people to rap music.
There is a difference,
