Way back when I worked at a grocery store, I would order products using a scanner connected to a recorder about the size of a size of a briefcase carried with a shoulder strap. When done with the order, I'd connect that device via the acoustic coupler to transmit the order to the warehouse. So not used for voice. Blast from the past! Thanks for the reminder.
Great video! Being a fan of retro digital electronics of the late 70's, 80's, I loved it. Couldn't take my eyes off the gorgeous 14 segment VFD in there. Can be repurposed in some cool project. :-)
Great finish :D When I worked tech support for Dell, we'd regularly get calls from TTD users. However, they would be done through an operator who would relay the information back and forth. Was really difficult if you had to do a complete Windows reinstall with the user!

I remember using an acoustic coupler modem, I assume the protocol is the same, might be worth some experimentation at some point.
