While serving in Saudi Arabia 25 years ago I mentioned to someone how it was a tradition for me to watch this every Thanksgiving and without my knowledge they had someone send a vhs copy from the US so I could see it...there are good people in this world :) Peace!
National Lampoon started with Animal House, a true comedy classic. Next was Vacation and its sequels. All other National Lampoon movies are a waste of time.
One of the best "buddy" movies ever. The Late John Candy is a beloved actor that started in SCTV, a sketch comedy show. You should really watch "Uncle Buck" and "The Great Outdoors" both are classic movies. For a little more serious, "Cool Runnings" is the story of the Jamaican Bobsled team in the 1988 Winter Olympics, still funny as hell, but a slice of history. Steve Martin has classics and some "cult" classics (if you know what I mean) , I would say one of his best is "Parenthood" (Directed by Ron Howard) but a little deeper "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid". Lots of people will recommend "The Jerk", it's good, but different, so head-up
Thank you for writing all this so I didn't have to. Man left way before his time but I'm glad he gave us so many memories. Recently been watching old SCTV uploads here on RUclips as being British it's all new to me. John Candy is sorely missed.
I would agree with all of these mention especially Uncle Buck but also Roxanne foe Steve Martin. Both at the time great actors and as for John Candy, he was one of the best comic actors of his day and was such a great loss. Really enjoy your channel, Thank You.
You've never seen that actor before John Candy who is in Uncle Buck, Home Alone, Armed and Dangerous, The Great Outdoors, Cool Runnings before he passed the guy is one of the most if not the most recognised comedian actors of the 80s
Another delightful Steve Martin film (with Rick Moranis) is "My Blue Heaven." Also, try to see his "All of Me" and "The Man With Two Brains." I would have suggested "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" before either of these, but I note with satisfaction it is already represented here.
If you want to see one of the greatest Steve Martin movies of all time, watch "The Jerk". He not only played the main character, he also wrote the story as well. That movie is a must see for any Steve Martin fan.
John Candy was a big star in his own right at the time, starring or co-starring in many films, bringing that same of humble honesty and sense of humor.
I'm am glad you have been introduced to John Candy, who is one of my all time favorites. He is in Stripes with Bill Murray, Splash with Tom Hanks, and one of his most hilarious but lesser-known solo films is Going Berserk. Great Outdoors with Dan Aykroyd is also pretty good. A lot of other Candy films are just so-so, but he was always great. Thanks for doing these reactions!
John Candy in Splash is a fave of mine (Tom Hanks stars, Ron Howard's directorial debut, I believe) and Great Outdoors is great, too (Dan Akroyd co-stars).
Only The Lonely of course but the big thing was Maureen O'Hara, who was in some of John Wayne movies as the leading lady came out of retirement for this movie. Her last movie before this was a small role on Big Jake 1971, John Wayne movie of course.
I have seen multiple reactions to this now and this one is still the best by far, not just the reaction but the editing, didn’t miss any important or emotional moments, great!
For Steve Martin, I recommend Roxanne, LA Story, The Jerk, Father of the Bride, Three Amigos, Parenthood, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Bowfinger, All of Me, My Blue Heaven.
Shaun, you did a great job anticipating what was coming! This is one of those films that regardless how often it’s on TV...and now probably free streaming somewhere...I’ve had it on disc for years and years.
It's great seeing you enjoy Del not knowing John Candy. That speaks volumes about him. I lived in his area growing up. Had the pleasure of three encounters. Just how you would expect him to be. One of a kind.
Shan, thank you for watching this movie. It is one of my favorites. At the end, when Del squeezes his gloves, you can feel his sorrow in missing his wife, but smiles at Neil and wife enjoying their own embrace is a very touching moment. IMO this is Candy's best film and probably Martins also. As for the Vacation films. I would suggest you start with the original "Vacation".

John Candy got his start on SCTV out of Toronto . He died at the early age of 43, from a heart attack. I loved John in the movie Cool Runnings as he played the coach of the Jamaican bobsled team in the Winter Olympic games.
This is probably my favorite Steve Martin movie. These days it is hard to imagine Thanksgiving being so snowy but back in those days it very well could be.

Those are all good movies. Lots of shared memories with my Dad and those films. Uncle Buck... what's your record for most asked questions asked? [Love that part, probably misquoted it tho! ]
I had an experience similar to this movie, but it all happened in a day. The worst moving day of my life Our moving truck left early before our stuff was loaded on it. We had to cram our car full, with the rest getting stored in the garage while the new owners who came early with their moving van were moving in. Halfway up the motorway, my uncle's TV stand (which we were dropping off for him) flew off the roof rack right into the middle of the motorway. An 18 wheeler created a traffic jam across the motorway so my dad could retrieve it. We dumped the now broken TV stand at our uncle's place, got back onto the now gridlocked motorway caused by the earlier traffic jam from the 18 wheeler earlier. 2/3 hours later, we were driving through Whitstable high street by the Art center, a little girl ran out into traffic and got hit by a car 2 up from ours. Had to wait for the ambulance to pick the little girl up (we read in the local paper that she was fine with no serious injuries) Finally got to our new place to find my uncle passed out drunk on the doorstep who was holding our key for us. Our movers had a list of where everything was to go. They didn't pay any attention and just dumped everything everywhere they could. My dad had his own major "F bomb" rant at this point. My dad drove my uncle home as he wasn't fit to drive his own car while the rest of us waited in the lounge where all the bedroom stuff was dumped sitting on the mattress. We went just up the road to the caravan park, where we had our own caravan to crash for the night. And finally, my mum and dad went to the pub to get something to eat only to find the oven in the pub kitchen wasn't working and all they could have was something deep-fried or snacks from the bar. So yeah ... not a good day. If anyone made a movie of this, no one would believe it. PS: Sorry for the long comment.
Here's my top Steve Martin films at his best imo "The Jerk" ,"The Man with two brains" and "Leap of faith". As for John Candy, "The Great Outdoors" and "Uncle Buck" which was directed by the same Director that filmed "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" . National Lampoons Vacation should be viewed first which has Chevy Chase and also John Candy.
ROXANNE for SM - In most of his movies, he’s a lovable dunce (The Jerk) or kinda a jerk (Planes, Trains ...). In Roxanne, he’s very smart and witty but also lovable and just a tiny bit of a jerk in one scene. It’s my favorite for SM. PARENTHOOD for SM - It’s an ensemble film. You might be surprised at the actors you’ll see. It’s mostly comedic but w/real problems drama-wise. Very good. UNCLE BUCK for JC - Probably his best known and most successful where he’s the main star. Pretty good movie, and JC is such a smart, wonderful teddy bear. You just want to hug him. GREAT OUTDOORS for JC - Another ensemble where, again, you might be surprised who you’ll see. It’s just a fun movie, nothing super-memorable although one of the more successful ones for JC.
I hope you watch the director's cut of Dark City. I love that movie. John Candy was in some great movies besides this. I see many of his movies mentioned in the comments already, but he really was a funny, talented actor. Uncle Buck was a lot of fun but he's also great in Spaceballs, the Great Outdoors, Who's Harry Crumb?, Splash and so many more. I even loved him in Nothing but Trouble which seems to not be a fan favorite movie. 😀
In film school one of the profs said that you'll know who is/are the main characters when a character knows something about themselves at the end of the picture that they didn't know at the beginning. With that film theory nugget, Neil is the main character. ;)
National Lampoon’s Animal House is amazing, cowritten by Harold Ramis who later co-wrote and starred in Stripes and Ghostbusters. National Lampoon’s Vacation and Christmas Vacation are great too. John Candy always plays humor with a bittersweet hint of innocent heartache in his best roles. This is the best Steve Martin movie, followed closely by The Jerk.
@@shanwatchesmovies also I was wondering if you could watch one of my favourite films batman 1989 I think it’s still one of the best films in the franchise cheers mate
Love John Hughes. I wonder if he ever got a lifetime achievement award for consistently great work. If no one has already recommended it, Bowfinger is a must-see hilarious comedy with Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy.
He also had a cameo in Home Alone, he helped Kevin's mother get home (mighta not recognized him here cause of his mustache that he didn't have then), played a Polka player.
John Candy and John Hughs match up again in another great comedy in "Uncle Buck". This is another favorite John Candy performance I would recommend . Christmas Vacation with Steve Martin is another I watch every holiday season.
My 2 favorite Steve Martin movies are “the Jerk” and “Dead Men Dont Wear Plaid”. While both are great, I think a film buff such as yourself will enjoy “dead men” because it’s a parody of film noir movies that actually utilized snippets of 19 films into its plot. It’s funny AND it keeps you looking for your favorite classic actors showing up. As for which vacation film? Start with Family Vacation, watch Christmas Vacation in December and stay away from Vegas Vacation. 😉
Man you should really look up other Films with John candy, he's in some really good movies! Also National lampoons movies can all be taken indivdually, but I'd say christmas vacation is one of the best, probably best to start with european vacation.
I gave 'the great outdoors' a shot the other night, because Candy and Aykroyd sounded like an appealing combination. it was fun, but I'm sure I'm missing some gems. suggestions?
"Who's Harry Crumb?" and "Armed & Dangerous" are two of my special favorite John Candy films, you'll also see him in "Stripes" as Pvt. Dewey "Ox" Oxberger.
This is one of the best Hughes movies. I saw it in the theatre in 1987 and it gets better with every viewing. The Jerk is a classic Steve Martin movie (made in the 70s and a little strong for today’s audience). John Candy is great in Uncle Buck and I think Hughes wrote that as well.
regarding Kevin Bacon's "cameo", someone recently said that that particular scene was also in another movie that Kevin Bacon starred in, She's Having a Baby, and in that, it shows Kevin's POV of the race with Steve Martin to the cab.
Both Steve Martin and John Candy are also in "Little Shop of Horrors" (a horror comedy musical) although both in limited roles. But Steve Martin is FANTASTIC in it as a sadistic dentist.
WHAT?! HOW HAVE YOU NOT SEEN ANY JOHN CANDY!?!? YOURE A FILM ACTOR BUFF! Lol. Dude. Shan. You have got to do more films with Candy. And also look him up. He’s the best and tragic story. Miss him so much. One of the best. Like Bill Murray.
John Hughes is one of my favorite film makers! Does an excellent job with family and relatable emotions. Nation lampoons are funny I’d recommend watching “Vacation” with Chevy Chase.
John Candy was a national treasure. He is great in all his movies.
*International treasure.

Uncle Buck is another great Candy/Hughes project.
Absolutely. If you like this, you have to watch Uncle Buck.
Shan, you owe it to yourself to watch "Uncle Buck" , starring John Candy.
I'll check it out sometime, thanks!
I loved "Who's Harry Crumb" (another John Candy movie) when I was young. It is a comedy in the similar vein as Naked Gun or Airplane. A guilty pleasure movie for me.
John Hughes wrote Uncle Buck just for John Candy. They were pals. That's why hes also in Home Alone.

Thank you so much Donna! I'll be adding The Jerk to one of the December polls! oh and thank your for the wonderful trivia too!
Besides this movie, I think "Uncle Buck" is the John Candy movie to watch. I'd like to recommend two early Steve Martin movies, "The Man With Two Brains" and "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid".
Those are all good movies. Lots of shared memories with my Dad and those films. Uncle Buck... what's your record for most asked questions asked? [Love that part, probably misquoted it tho! ]
@@MiRuina69
Buck: What's your record for consecutive questions asked?
Miles: 38.
You can read the whole routine at the IMDb.
I had an experience similar to this movie, but it all happened in a day. The worst moving day of my life
Our moving truck left early before our stuff was loaded on it.
Had to wait for the ambulance to pick the little girl up (we read in the local paper that she was fine with no serious injuries)
Finally got to our new place to find my uncle passed out drunk on the doorstep who was holding our key for us.
"Father of the Bride" is a good Steve Martin movie.
Also Father of the Bride Part 2. Gotta watch both.
Yes!
Kathleen Turner is so incredibly beautiful in The Man With Two Brains.
This is my favorite comedy! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
For more John Candy:
Uncle Buck
Space Balls
Steve Martin:
The Jerk
Three Amigos
In film school one of the profs said that you'll know who is/are the main characters when a character knows something about themselves at the end of the picture that they didn't know at the beginning. With that film theory nugget, Neil is the main character. ;)
Such a classic movie, I watch it every year on thanksgiving
National Lampoon’s Animal House is amazing, cowritten by Harold Ramis who later co-wrote and starred in Stripes and Ghostbusters. National Lampoon’s Vacation and Christmas Vacation are great too.
John Candy always plays humor with a bittersweet hint of innocent heartache in his best roles.
This is the best Steve Martin movie, followed closely by The Jerk.
I also liked Candy's performance in JFK. He was totally different than most characters he played.
You have to watch uncle buck really good film.
Definitely Stephen!
@@shanwatchesmovies also I was wondering if you could watch one of my favourite films batman 1989 I think it’s still one of the best films in the franchise cheers mate
@@stephengill745 Batman Returns is really good too!
@@jessecoombs yes I loved both of Tim’s films shame he couldn’t make the third one.
Three Amigos is a fun and silly Steve Martin film, and L.A. Story is underrated.
Ebert said it best “ Hughes cares about his characters”
Love John Hughes. I wonder if he ever got a lifetime achievement award for consistently great work. If no one has already recommended it, Bowfinger is a must-see hilarious comedy with Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy.
You said you haven't seen John Candy in anything else before, I had to stop right away and say you MUST watch 'the great outdoors' and 'uncle buck'
Thank you Otto! The film's you mentioned are the ones most recommended in the comments. I added both to the list!
He also had a cameo in Home Alone, he helped Kevin's mother get home (mighta not recognized him here cause of his mustache that he didn't have then), played a Polka player.
I like how they gave a nod to national lampoons vacation with the metalic pea woody car..like a mini version of the family truckster
Steve Martin is great in Bowfinger with Eddie Murphy... i highly recommend it, it's about making a movie.
John Candy and John Hughs match up again in another great comedy in "Uncle Buck". This is another favorite John Candy performance I would recommend . Christmas Vacation with Steve Martin is another I watch every holiday season.
Steve Martin in LA Story is one of my favorites.
The lady at the car rental check out desk also plays principal assistant in *(Ferris Bueller's Day Off)*
If you're going to start with National Lampoon movies, tis the season for Christmas Vacation. Mixed Nuts is another good Steve Martin holiday movie.
Great reaction. I love this film.
Steve Martin in "The Jerk"(1979) is one of his best and a must watch.
In the airport, Del is reading "The Canadian Mounted." lol
Natl lampoons Christmas is a MUST and it’s coming upon the season as well. BEST in the series, hands down.
Best to start with “Vacation”, which by the way has John Candy in a small role.
"Who's Harry Crumb?" and "Armed & Dangerous" are two of my special favorite John Candy films, you'll also see him in "Stripes" as Pvt. Dewey "Ox" Oxberger.
and Cool Runnings!
I said the exact same thing. European -> Christmas Vacation.
Awesome!!!
So glad you decided to watch this!!!
The two Steve Martin movies I would recomend would be:
All Of Me - 1984
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels -1988
YES, these are two of his best!!
"She's got the whole cast of Gone With The Wind humping in my head!"
"He called me LADY Fanny?"
For Steve Martin, I would recommend “LA Story” or “Roxanne”
Just curious... how did you know who Del Griffith was when Neil tripped over his trunk?
I caught that too. “That’s Del Griffith’s trunk”, but the character hadn’t even been introduced yet. Hmmmm.
@@BClarke I don't think Del's face had even been shown at that point, let alone his name given.
Uncle Buck with John Candy is a classic
regarding Kevin Bacon's "cameo", someone recently said that that particular scene was also in another movie that Kevin Bacon starred in, She's Having a Baby, and in that, it shows Kevin's POV of the race with Steve Martin to the cab.
The Jerk, Three Amigos and Bowfinger are the Steve Martin films I'd recommend. Uncle Buck and The Great Outdoors for John Candy.
He's only seen Steve Martin's worst two movies, and none of John Candy's! What an amazing comedy journey he has ahead of him.
"Rocky" is another good Thanksgiving film 🦃 👍
2:29, loved the Kevin Bacon Cameo and was always wondering if he and Martin would play bickering neighbors in a movie.
oh by the way the actor playing the highway policeman who stops them in their burned up car was also david st hubbins from spinal tap for a cameo
John Hughes is one of my favorite film makers! Does an excellent job with family and relatable emotions. Nation lampoons are funny I’d recommend watching “Vacation” with Chevy Chase.
"Bowfinger." Steve Martin. Eddie Murphy. A movie about gonzo film making.
Seems everyone misses when Dell tells Neil he hasn't been home in years. If you catch that, then you Dell was all alone.
