How to install/wire a kenne bell boost a pump BAP. Pre-fpdm

  • “I would install the BAP PRE-fpdm. If you install it post fpdm the pcm no longer has full control over the pumps and can cause some tuning issues. There is no disadvantage of installing pre-fpdm. You won't fry the bap this way. I have mine wired pre-fpdm and running full time as I don't use the boost switch that comes with the kit. I set mine to 40% and it's been there for the past 54k miles with no issues. OH and there is not any tuning required if you move the bap to a pre-fpdm configuration.”
    This video shows how I wired the Boost a pump BAP into my Cobra. I wish I did an install video, but this was done 3 years ago. Note I wired this up PRE-FPDM (before the fuel pump driver module FPDM) and also I am not running the Hobbs switch (very common). The BAP is wired to be on the entire time and not activated by boost (which is what the hobbs wire and switch would do. I am also not running an upgraded power wire
    "I'd add to it that you don't need the kb adj knob. The new ones don't even come with them anymore. The other black wire is connected just like the Hobbs wire is
    Most People don't understand how the Boost a pump works. They think they need a knob.
    Well back in the old day before fpdm' the bap ran right to the pump and sent 30-100% voltage 8-17v directly to the pump.
    In a fpdm setup, the knob should be set to 100 or wires connected with no knob. The fpdm only uses the voltage that is needed based on ecm demand. It's not sending 17 volts to the fpdm unless the pumps are at max anyways."

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  8 лет назад

      Mine does not have the wire upgrade. With the wire upgrade you have to add the power wire from the batter to connect to a relay. There is a diagram in the video at the end that shows it

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  8 лет назад

      So you would need to run the power wire from the battery to the relay, then the relay would connect to the BAP (via the red wire that has the inline fuse), then add another ground from the relay to the car.

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  8 лет назад

      Watch at 3:54 of the video and you'll see the diagram

    • @jflandrvr00
      @jflandrvr00 8 лет назад

      Is that all there is to it? Do you have to cut the red, black, and violet wire and replace it with a bigger gauge wire?

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  8 лет назад

      +jflandrvr00 I haven't done it so I can't say 100%, but it appears you need to 1.Run the new power wire (which will have its own online fuse) from the car battery to the relay. 2. Run the BAP's red wire with inline fuse to the BAP. 3. Cut the green with yellow stripe wire coming off the fuel pump driver Module. 4. Attach the violet wire to the green with yellow stripe wire closest to the FPDM, and then the other end of the green with yellow stripe wire would attach to the relay. You also have a ground going from the BAP to the frame of the car and a ground from the relay going to the frame of the car

I did unplug the inertia switch and let the car idle and die out to relieve the pressure in the system. After replacing the filter and plugging the inertia switch back in, when I start the car, the fuse to the fuel pump (under the hood) blows every time. It idles and then dies out. It's most likely at the max of the fuse size or possibly a bad connection causing more draw on one side. That's how a GFI trips on a house outlet, so similar concept. I would check the wiring connections, if possible measure them with a volt meter and maybe even rewire the connections. If you put a larger fuse in there TEMPORARILY TO TEST it you'll know if its getting too much power or not. Don't leave it that way, just see if it keeps getting hot.
