Hello and welcome to the 2021 How Far Away Is It review.
Last year we covered the workings of the James Webb Space Telescope with the idea that this year’s review would include pictures from Webb. Continuing delays pushed the launch out to Christmas Day. So far, telescope deployment and the journey and insertion into its L2 orbit are complete. But mirror calibration will take months. So, we won’t be seeing images from Webb until our 2022 update. I’ll have more on this in our first segment of this review.
After that we’ll see an asteroid that looks like a comet. We’ll take a closer look at Jupiter’s great storm. Previously, we covered how the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft landed on the asteroid Bennu. In 2021 it stared its journey back to Earth carrying Bennu rocks. We’ll cover new stars forming in Orion and news on the supergiant VY Canis Majoris’ diming.
Moving out of the Milky Way, we’ll see a couple of supernovae. We’ll examine a diffuse galaxy without any Dark Matter. We’ll see a couple of interacting galaxies, and a galaxy with a 36,000 light-years long shadow. We’ll cover a gamma ray burst that may have been connect to the creation of a magnetar. I have a beautiful image of the gravitationally lensed Molten Ring Galaxy. We’ll see multiple images of a supernova along with the prediction that one more image will show up in 2037.
We’ll take a look at a couple of double quasars. We’ll finish with Hamelton’s Object - 11 bly away.
For the last segment we’ll do a deeper dive into three missions to Mars: One from the United Arab Emirates; one from China; and one from the US.
We’ll start with a brief update on Webb. I trust you’ll find it all interesting and informative. Thanks for watching.

I watch David Butler’s entire “How Far Away is it” plays list every night before I go to bed. His summary of physics and modern cosmology is top-notch, and the narration style and content is perfect. I’ve seen all the episodes so many times that I usually just pick an episode at random if I’m tired and wake up with it still playing on another video.
My favorites are the 2016-2020 summaries.
David, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making these videos. You’ve enriched my life immensely.

G'day Nick from Australia, I'm the same. There's something really special and heartwarming and peaceful about putting on David Butler's videos and just checking out. I can only claim to understand perhaps 5-10% of the content he discusses (depending on the exact clip), but I appreciate the explanation, his production values, the slower pace of his videos, his use of beautiful timeless music and effective but not intrusive CGI. It's magical content and it's amazing that the vast proportion of the internet's citizens will never be aware of this man's singular work.

@@DanielVerberne I know, what really floors me is how impressive his career and life’s work was, and the fact that he went to Oxford and got a phd in math and physics, spent 40 years in the tech/computer industry doing big things, then retired and was curious about what developments in fundamental physics and cosmology that he had missed out on, so he brushed up on it and did his research like the true scientist that he is, then produced these videos!
      G’day Daniel!

You and me, have been into bed so many times... that my girl are even now familiar with your voice.
I know this may sound weird, but I love these videos that are often suited with classic music - which ain't something Im usually into, but it just fits these videos perfectly.
So I often have my tablet on my side of the bed, with these fascinating videos running.
anyway, just a brief thank you here from Dennmark, I really like the work you put into your videos.

Calm, precise and comprehensible and without showmanship. He gets to the heart of today's physics like no other.
My heart always jumps for joy when I hear sentences like.
"Light, as we understand it today, ....". It says more than a thousand words how much this man loves physics.
Nothing is artificially inflated as in various other documentaries about physics, where you have the feeling that they either just want to impress you or sell you a "car". Thank you for that!
Please keep up the good work.

The Butler series is a terrific layman’s guide to the micro and macro universe. It is an enormous help to the human (me) for understanding (to some little degree) time and space, science and the spiritual, for they are, in the end, all ONE. Ponder the notion, as impossible as it will always seem, that the PAST, the PRESENT, and the FUTURE, are the same thing, which gives a great deal of meaning to the WORK each of us does in the moment.
