    To the all people complaining about it being slightly misleading, you COULD in theory composite a hologram on these 3d shapes by using projection mapping on some sort of gas/dust particles/beads that is made of highly reflective non-toxic material. Someone just needs to sit and write the software for this to be a reality.

    that is quite wonderful work done to create such a stepping point. I think this would be well deserved of research and improvement. I would love to see how far the idea could really go with adapting to more fields.

    Having a projected knob in a car would be way less safe than a physical knob. The whole point of it being physical is you can pay little attention to lining your hand up with the physical feedback of the knob. Positioning your hand in a 3D space would take much more concentration and should not be done while driving.

      good point

      @mariusg8824 10 лет назад +11

      As I understand that, the idea here is not to replace the physical knobs, but rather create a guidance system so you feel where they are before you touch them.

      Though it could be used to direct your hand toward physical controls without needing bigger controls, witch could reduce the amount of concentration needed to get to a control without taking more place.

      You can feel this though. That's the whole point of haptic feedback.

    There is a way to do Full Dive only with ultrasound.
    No exoskeletons needed.
    Just pressure. It is all about pressure to do motoric control and
    proprioception/Sensation.
    It is all about pressure.
    We will Full Dive.

    first shot is very misleading, this does not render stuff in free space, though perhaps this could be combined with ultrasonic mist or something (ultrasonic humidifiers) and projectors, if you could get the mist into shapes using the ultrasound, you could project onto them in a controlled manner (maybe)

    • @kassie2k4
      @kassie2k4 10 лет назад +2

      it's just a visualization, they are getting volume data with the ultrasound and using it to occlude a 3d shape added to the motion tracked video, while the person there does feel the shape, they do not see it - however with the oil distortions, the shapes can be seen in from the light refraction

    Технология, разработанная учеными Бристольского университета, генерирует тактильную объемную форму, дополняющую изображение 3D-дисплея. Она презентована на проходящей 3−6 декабря конференции SIGGRAPH Asia 2014 (Шеньчжэнь, Китай). Предложенный метод использует ультразвук, который ощущается рукой, располагаемой над специальным устройством: фокусировка сложных ультразвуковых узоров создает воздушные колебания. По словам разработчиков, в будущем люди могли бы не просто чувствовать на ощупь голограммы объектов, ранее недоступных им для осязания - например, уникальных музейных экспонатов. Они обещают еще и различные ощущения при тактильном исследовании голограмм, «состоящих» из различающихся материалов и структур. Так, работая в связке с компьютерным томографом, технология позволила бы врачу «нащупать» опухоль в голограмме организма пациента.

    If they could miniaturize the technology such that it could be attached to a VR headset like the Oculus Quest, it could be combined with the new hand tracking tech to provide tactile edges to virtual objects in free space. How cool would that be? Even just feeling the surface of the Guardian space would be amazing!

It just needs to get at the level where its usable, and there's going to be specialty porn made for this stuff.

    This is cool, but the video is kind of annoying: most of the video is just showing the oil and not the rendered shapes... -- also the applications listed at the end are a bit unimaginative.... -- I mean, having a volumetric display with haptic feedback sounds like it could revolutionize how we use computers today (especially ergonomics!!) ... though that could be a ways off -- and I can't tell, was the color in the last demonstration actually present (can the technology produce colors or just bounce oils around with sound?) -- I think if you just bounced every possible point with oil at a certain frequency (i.e. a refresh rate), and applied RGB lasers to it (like a CRT), you would both be able to measure where the users hands were but also give true RGB voxel display. Also, I wonder if ultrasounds is really the right way to do this and not something utilizing ferromagnetic fluids...

    • @AbstractWerks
      @AbstractWerks 9 лет назад

      You were misled by the video. The shapes don't reflect light. You can't see them. You can only feel them but they claim you can feel them accurately.

    • @BrainSlugs83
      @BrainSlugs83 9 лет назад

      Rukiryo yeah, that's correct. I misunderstood it. Thanks. I still think with some reflective ferromagnetic fluid that you could make a volumetric display that could also give haptic and visual feedback.
