One shouldn't compare great horses with each-other - It's better just to lean back and enjoy. Certainly, Varenne and Ideal du Gazeu are probably the greatest horses I have ever experienced live. They competed against the best during a number of years, won regardless of distance, positions at the starts or during the races. I wish I could have seen other horses like Nevele Pride, Gelinotte, Greyhound etc. :)
well what planet did Dan Patch, Niatross and his son Nihilator come from? because their credentials for greatest is equally worthy, and N and N did their bidding in only a 2 yr career. Patch ran 10 yrs undefeated. Set mile record that stood for 54 years. he broke 14 world records. N and N are making $8M/yr in stud fees which is the reason they are not racing more than 2 yrs but each was truly incredible.

Hey Cathryn. Apples and oranges. 1) Dan Patch and Niatross raced on in the US. 2) They were both pacers!! not trotters.
