The tnt gives you a quick distraction and knocks them back and doesn't do that much damage to you, and also allows the tnt to break the bed defense so you can break the bed. Except for the part where you can break the wool with your fist faster than the tnt detonates.
I actually think pop-up towers are quite a useful and interesting item. Whenever I have too much iron they're a good thing to buy instead of just getting 20 fireballs I use them for trying to break beds, I drop onto their defense and instantly place a pop-up tower and start mining through. The tower means that they have to break 2 blocks of wool to get in which can take some time without shears. It gives you plenty of time to break into their defense and block yourself in. They also come in handy when running away from someone. Haven't finished the video yet so some of these things may have already been mentioned.
Ender they can be used to get fast high ground can be used as escape or offensive for tnt or getting up to someone that is towering up You can also use them as fireball jumping if you stand on the edge while its “popping up” and will launch you up its hard and inconsistent but can be a really cool play

I've had this happen two times, one where some dumbass creates a huge defense that literally blocks your view of anyone coming towards the base, and the other where I made an entirely obsidian defense, only for one guy to come in, put some TNT in and then literally mine the obsidian and destroy the bed in front of my team mates.
I remember one game I decided to use pop-up towers to see what they're like and as soon as I saw I was like "omg this is the best thing". so I started using pop-up towers for literally everything, defense, bridging, actual towers. We had so many pop-up towers people had to buy fireballs and it STILL didn't work because I'll just place another pop-up tower! Basically pop-up towers are great defense against fireballs and also people who like to go above. If you build high enough they wouldn't be able to get high up and you'll just shoot them down with a bow. That crazy game lasted like an hour, our team placed like I dunno 2 stacks of pop-up towers in total. We basically outlasted everybody and won.

I use them as a hiding method. I go in the tower, wherever I placed it, go to the top. I then place down a water bucket (or four(one in each corner)) and then no one will come up because it is really hard for people to swim.
They're very powerful in 1.16 coz if u put 1 above the enemy it won't suffocate them but make them glitch through the floor and make them fall in the void
When im walkin on a bridge and enemy shoots a fireball. I put pop up tower in front of me so it blocks all the explosion. And there is literally anything left from the tower so 24 iron counters 40 iron. Its also good for trapping people or blocking myself in
Cover your bed defence in water, then put pop-up towers on top of it, like a load of them to create a sort of underwater maze, if they go in there they’ll probably drown or not be able to find the bed. Tried it a couple times and it works best with a trap, if your trap goes off and they’re already in, just kill them from behind.

pop up towers are good for turtleing strats. They let you use fireballs and bows to hit people from a farther distance, and have the high ground when someone gets in your base.

the best use i found is that if you are chased on a bridge you can place the chest under you and delay the enemy with some seconds that can accualy save your life

With regards to pop-up towers, they only have two main uses: delaying death while breaking someone's bed, and a quick wall/barrier.
the best use i found is that if you are chased on a bridge you can place the chest under you and delay the enemy with some seconds that can accualy save your life
