    I have been watching all your videos and vicariously enjoying the highs and lows, the gentle breezes, no wind and the windy squalls. Ducking my head when the waves throw themselves on Pickled Herring. Used to sail myself and I miss the beautiful moonlight evenings creaming along keeping a watch with our "hissing sid" safely steering us to our destination. But I also remember fighting the wind and tide on the nose and sitting outside cherbourg waiting for the tide to turn and the wind to abate the motor being useless as it was cavitating and not doing its job. We were in a 42 foot catamaran and being thriwn around like the washing in the washing machine. So, I woukd rather watch your videos in the comfort of my sitting room. Safe journeys. Wish I was there, love the mediterranean. By the way, I am an 80 year old woman and the last time I sailed was 1996. But I still have my memories.

    What any 'good' boater would do contemplating the journeys you've engaged would certainly involve a much devoted study to properly navigate and accommodate a safe trip, and yet when I watch you, you make it so casual - not much more than a run to the store. Continued safe boating!👍🙏

    It's not too many years since I was sailing in the Greek Islands (Southern Ionian and Cyclades). I recall that the paper charts at the time were based on British Admiralty charts that were surveyed by sextant in the eighteen hundreds and subject to an error of up to 1.5 nautical miles!!! If your electronic charts were based on them, it could explain why Islands were in the wrong place.
    You can get accurate way points for harbour entrances and marine navigation hazards from a good pilot book.

    I'll tell you a little secret from an ex-mapmaker. We deliberately put errors in maps. Known to us but not to anybody else. Specially not our compettitors. Why you may ask? It was/is for copyright reasons. Ofcourse we meticulously administrated those 'errors' so we could always retrace them.
    AND more importantly we would be able to verify if/when a competitor stole our map. Handy as evidence in court.

    • @SavingMaverick55
      @SavingMaverick55 6 месяцев назад +1

      That's sleazy as hell, dude. Maps should be as accurate as possible without douchebags deliberately putting errors on them just to throw off competitors or be litigious. I didn't even know maps were something that could be copyrighted. That just seems weird and mildly unethical to me.

    Not to criticize, I guess I just do not understand the circumstances is all. Turkey looked awesome and you said you wish you could spend more than a day there, so why couldn't you? You are doing what many of us could only wish for, or will hope to do after many many years or preparation ourselves. I would think you could go as fast or slow as you want, money providing. If you find a place you enjoy, I thought the idea was to stay there and explore and take it all in for as long as a visa lasted in that country. If I get to the point in my own boat that i can do a circumnavigation such as that, far far down the road, I would have thought that was the way to go. Leave behind the junky or expensive locations and spend more of your time in the fantastic places.

      There are hundreds if not thousands of yachts registered to USA in Turkish waters and marinas. The reason is ( was) to avoid super heavy local taxes. Registering a vessel to the State of Delaware had been the choice for many due to its very easy paperwork and low cost. All you had to do was to start a LLC. So, if it reads Wilmington, Delaware that’s a Turkish boat. İn march 2023 though ,Delaware declared they won’t renew registrations unless that vessel is DE waters for 6 months outta year. Now everybody is switching to Polish, UK or San Marino flags.

    The ancient city of Knidos is an ancient city founded not by the Greeks, but by the Carians, one of the ancient Anatolian peoples. Almost nothing is known about ancient Anatolian civilizations. This is very sad. There is a narrative tradition based on ancient Greek sources that the Carians were a sea tribe spread across the Aegean Sea. Even earlier, (Before the wave of Greek colonization) in Homer, the Carians are counted among the allies of the Trojans in the Trojan War, and their territory is stated to extend further north, including Miletus (Balat) and Mykale (Dilek Peninsula). The Mylasian Hekatomnids dynasty, and especially during the reign of Mausolus, pursued de facto independent policies, but the penetration of Hellenism into the inner regions and the establishment of ancient Greek as the official language began in this period, and the Carian language probably disappeared shortly before or after Christ.
