The built up area around the telescope door is designed to keep the airflow out of the telescope cavity with the door open in flight. The wing tip probe/Antenna were not installed on SOFIA.
The wingtip probes were on SOFIA for most of its career it looks like. In recent photos they appear to have been removed
The Clipper Lindberg was the name given to the aircraft when it was originally delivered to Pan Am, who later sold it to United Airlines.
I figured it was Ex Pan-Am. I didn't think United named their planes. Thank you! It's cool how NASA kept the name
