The Problems with Korean Work Culture | Interviewing Koreans

  • South Korea’s work culture can be stressful for many reasons. Many workers are often required to attend company dinners, which can go late after work hours and include heavy drinking. Seniority in a company can be more important than a person’s skill or knowledge. And Korean’s show company loyalty through working long hours. But that’s not to say it’s bad - it’s different, and there are pros and cons. The question I asked them was this: 한국 직장 문화에 대해서 어떻게 생각하세요? (“What do you think about Korea’s work culture?”). As a follow-up question I also asked this: 한 가지만 바꿀 수 있다면 어떤 게 바뀌었으면 좋겠어요? (“If you could change one thing, what would it be?”)

I am an American teaching in Korea. I have worked for three different companies. My bosses only pay me overtime for teaching hours, but I don't get paid for any other type of overtime, although I work a total of 50 hours a week. I get ten vacation days a year plus "red" holidays. Vacations times are decided by the bosses, so I get five days in winter, and another five in summer--at the coldest and hottest times of the year. I like teaching, but it's pretty stressful, I do the majority of the work, and I don't do much other than sleep and chores on the weekends. I quit and re-sign every year just so I can get some proper time off to see my family. I feel sorry for kids who only see their fathers for an hour or two a day. Kids also work too hard here. This will be my last year in South Korea. There's not a lot of reward here.

I've heard it all depends on the company you work for, and a lot of companies (English teaching) and schools can make it really difficult to keep doing the job. Some teaching jobs (rare) pay well with good benefits, but usually require a full Visa to work and other special skills.

that must suck big time.. the fact that you don't get much free time for yourself and your family and have to work so much :/

Koreans are hardworkers especially after the war they were more hardworking. Not to mention the amount of pressure on them for being a small population but having fierce competition with forigners who obviously have the upper hand. Especially since they know English while Koreans worked all their lives for a really hard exam. And studied so much for a good college. If ur a forigner who came to korea with ur English skills to live there obviously u won't last compared to the Koreans who overwork because of their environment but also because they themselves work so hard. Like what did u expect. I do ib and even though I'm mixed korean even I don't really wanna go there because I know how hard Koreans work. U can't go to Korea just to teach English and expect it to be easy just cause in ur country u don't work as hard. And yes if ur a forigner u have the upper hand. However u can't continue to think you'll have the upper hand just cause ur a forigner and u don't have to work as hard as others. Ofc this type of work isn't good. It's toxic. However I find it hypocritical for forigners to complain about how korea gives out less visa and then complains about koreas work system. They give out less visas because forigners have an advantage and it makes it more stressful for Koreans who are already competitive hence the high suicide rates. But ur calling Koreans selfish. Like even today I saw a video like that. U say something about their work system and then u cry when they do something about it cause it affects u like sorry for prioritizing citezens

@@kozumekenma9157 I don't know where you got the idea that I think Koreans are selfish. I was emphasizing that they are forced to work too hard and for too long. Moreover, you say "foreigners". This is too general. For example, Mexicans work extremely long hours, too. Americans work fewer hours per day than South Koreans, but extremely hard--they receive fewer benefits or free time than anyone in Europe and despite this are rated as one of the most productive countries in the world. Finally, most foreigners don't have the upper hand. They come there because of a shortage of South Korean workers in certain fields. English instructors aren't the only type of foreigners working in South Korea. For someone who has never been there, you surely presume a lot. You certainly came to a strange conclusion.

    • @kozumekenma9157
      @kozumekenma9157 Год назад

@@foraminiferan huh I never said u were selfish I'm talking about the videos these days that are trending about forigners complaining that korea gives limited visas these days because of the stressful competition Koreans are under from the amount of forigners who try to live in korea these days. And ur comment just saying ur not living in korea again. Like the work culture in korea is really stressful but I think it's admirable how hard Koreans work to come where they are today and maybe u didn't realize how hard it was but u shouldn't go to another country thinking it will be easy just cause forigners usually have the advantage(not u specifically but a lot of forigners). Maybe u didn't mean it like that but it certainly sounds like it from how u say "I'm never gonna live there again" like. They work hard. U know that. Did u expect it to be easy? It's a genuine question because I'm not saying this is u but I see so much forigners who move to korea expecting it to be easier because they know english. So I'm just curious
Secondly I say forigners cause a lot of them do come and there was even a big issue of them scamming Koreans just cause they know English to teach English. Without a license and made a lot of money
Finally forigners do have the upperhand because while in korea even if u study really hard if u don't do the best u won't get into top universities hence get a good job while forigners have an advantage of knowing English and usually use that to be an English teacher in korea.
It's not a strange conclusion it's the truth and I just see so much people saying a lot of weird stuff as people who are forigners more specifically Americans. Or Russians.

Korea seems to be a very nice place to visit but I did heard multiple times how the working culture in that country is kinda bad and in a lot of companies if you leave without doing countless hours of overwork people look at you as if you were lazy...
I dunno how true all of that is since I never went there tho.

I'm grateful for being employed in America. I have a 40 hour work week. The work day ends at 5 pm and I get weekends. Overtime is far and few in-between, but when it does happen, I know I'll be getting a little more in my paycheck. Watching videos on South Korea's - now - 52 hour work week, and listening to the citizens talk about overtime, I am glad I don't have to do that.

I still wish there were better federal regulations for salaried workers. There is no federal cap to the hours a salaried worker can be required to work per day, or per week. The average vacation time per year is also fairly poor at 17 days per year. I agree that it is way better than S.Korea or Japan, but we still have a ways to go.

However, I did have to look at the Korean sub-titles to process what they were saying at a slower speed. Nevertheless, I am happy that I understood sixty percent of the video without having to read the English sub-titles.

Glad to work in Europe. 40 hour weeks, 5 days a week.
Getting about a month per year as free days.
And the company i work at is flexible with those free days. If i want certain days off i'm almost guaranteed to get them.
And as for work the mentality is: If you can't get it done in your 8 hours per day, you're not efficient enough.
Working longer hours for extended periods of time here is not necessarily appreciated. It just means you don't get your work done in time, which means you're inefficient.
Successful economies don't need people to work the insane amounts South Koreans do. Yet it seems to be ingrained in their culture because of the recent rapid development of the country. I hope they can turn the tables, and succeed to get policies instated so the people can find balance between work, and private time, where people find time for themselves, family and friends, which is most important for our happiness as humans.
