      Not sure where this Doom a Gloom came from but your G2 isnt going to just die because MS stopped WMR support. If you like your G2 you will find one of the many ways to keep using it. It still isnt official to what MS is going to do. We do know the WMR division no longer exists but thats about it and that it still works of course.

    I used the G2 for 2 years, when I first put the Quest3 on I thought "wow it's as sharp as the G2 but with and a huge FOV and sweetspot." A bit of compression means nothing when you weigh up all the advantages, especially if you use AV1 on VD with a 40xx card. I'd never recommend the G2 now that we have the Q3, the G2 lenses are atrocious.

    • @Munky332
      @Munky332 11 месяцев назад +1

      Been testing since day 1, and IMO, high bitrate H.264+ > AV1 -- the only reason to use AV1 is if your network is dogshit and you absolutely need to go wireless. AV1 at best is like a 30% better per bitrate, but with 264+ you can go as high as 400-500, hell even 300 @ H.264 has its advantages. H.264 just has far better latency and consistency if you have the network for it (or just go with Link cable).
      Link cable I'm running 900 (though, its not *really* that high in actual use, but it comes close)

    • @Verociity
      @Verociity 11 месяцев назад

      @@Munky332 I'm on a 2080ti so I haven't used AV1, I usually use HEVC, I didn't notice much improvement with 264+ but I'll give it another go. I didn't realise 264 had better latency.

    • @Munky332
      @Munky332 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@Verociity AV1 is a meme honestly, its barely better than HEVC (like 5% better at same bitrate). You're limited by the decode processing capability of the Q3, which means you're limited to 200mbit on both of them, before inducing fucktons of latency.
      H.264 will saturate your network/connection before it induces enough latency to matter. I've run virtual desktop with 400-500mbit and seen between like 8-12ms, and even less with link cable.
      DCS's render engine is shit though, so anything above like 100mbit is basically unnoticable.
      essentially the *only* reason IMO to run AV1/HEVC is potentially in dark scenes where color banding is a problem (ie some very dark scenes in HL Alyx) or where your network is just shit and can't handle high bitrate H264

      No the Reverb G2 don't have better graphics. Why should it? I had one some years ago, immediately returned it after 2 days. The small FOV and the drastical sharpness loss beyond the center were just awful. This headset didn't make any sense for me, terrible. Now I have a Quest 3 and it's perfect. Good FOV, very small sharpness loss in the edges, good resolution, good frequency. Night and day difference to the Reverb G2. I don't see the USB-C cable connection as a noticeable disadvantage.

    Someone earlier asked about using the usb-c link rather than dvi. You explained artifacts weren't an issue but i wonder about impact on fps.
    When the Pico came out, people said you really needed a Nvidia 4 series to stream to it via usb-c at decent fps. So I assume the same applies here.
    So, what GPU are you using and did you notice any fps hit switching from g2 to q3?
    Thanks again for the video.

    • @Destarn
      @Destarn  10 месяцев назад +1

      So I can’t compare directly how much of a performance impact you get but any mid to high end GPU from the last few years (2070 and above) shouldn’t have much of a problem encoding the video.
      I have a 3090 and during my experiments I tried running extremely high resolutions and I never came into issues where the encoder was slower than rendering. I think I found my sweetspot with settings and I plan on making a video about that soon:tm:. I normally play with separate encoding running with OBS replays on H265 codec so it’s running on the GPU side too.

  • @romans6696
    @romans6696 5 месяцев назад

    Thanks for the comparison. Good work. No one talks about the hardware requirements vs the g2, unfortunately. I have a g2 now, and running dcs at 90 fps (to match the refresh rate of the lenses) is basically impossible without lowering pixel density. 60hz creates really bad strobing which gives me a headache. I am a hater of motion reprojection due to the artifacts and cannot stand it. Now, if i were to have my current system which already runs the g2, will the q3 run WORSE due to the wider range of clarity of the lenses, or same/better due to WMR bloatware being absent?

    • @romans6696
      @romans6696 5 месяцев назад

      And i mean will it run better/same/worse if both headsets ran at 90hz refresh rate. I would definitely get the q3 if at 72hz would allow me to play with slightly higher graphics and wothout reprojection..

    • @Destarn
      @Destarn  5 месяцев назад

      It will run roughly the same. In my experience initially I had a slightly better performance and better consistency. The lenses don’t affect performance since they just point the light at your eyes and they’re the main contributor to the Q3s superior visual quality, it’s the resolution that mainly determines the performance impact.
      The total pixel count is slightly lower on the Q3 but because of WMR shenanigans if you were to equal the resolution demanded you’d run marginally better. With the Q3
      you have the choice of 72 and 80 hz as well, I personally settled on 80 but as I mentioned in the video 72hz has no significant strobing. Another thing is Q3s reprojection is far better to WMR’s option so definitely do give it a try. There’s still artifacts here and there but nowhere near as bad as on the G2.

      well, WMR is basically dead, so that leaves what? Pimax (shit QC/CS, and horrible marketing practices), and the BSB (though both are not inside-out, both require base stations), or you can wait for valves new headset which will likely be $1000+, plus you'll need controllers & probably base stations bringing the cost closer to 1.5k if not more.
      Last option would be Pico 4, but that's not readily available in the US, without going grey market, and they just cancelled the Pico 5 so future is unknown.

I am a few days now into my Q3 and the AR is very very cool (watching movies I would have never done before sitting in my sim rig). My overall main dislike is the latency -- I am on a year old Wifi6 (not E) in a saturated environment (apartment building) . Many of these reviewers have houses away from other people with less wifi signals. I have yet to tweak mine better with Virtual Desktop. My 4090/7800x3d was only recognizing the stock cable as a USB 2 and was horrid with quality until VDesktop. Ordered both a Bobo S3 and a powered link cable. I totally agree on the lenses, though the SDE is much much worse; tradeoffs are still a point after 3 years of VR 2+. I find the Quest 3 to be a great device for standalone apps and mixed reality (MR). However, for PC VR, the HP Reverb G2 provides more immersion with stereoscopic, lifelike, a realistic graphics. Metal parts look like real metal, the lighting, reflections, and sky appear brighter and closer to real life. The image quality feels more natural and raw, thanks to the DisplayPort connection (unlike the Quest 3, which uses compressed video). I’ll keep the Quest 3 as a VR toy and plan to buy the Pimax Crystal Lite for serious PC VR gaming.( as HP reverb g2 replacement upgrade)

    Thanks for the video. Today my G2's left screen started flickerin (like it works only half of the right screens Hz, lowered the hz to 60 and the problem was just bigger. Then left screen worked like 30hz). Anyone else had this kind of issue? But anyways, I also own Pico 4 but I was disapointed with its streaming quality. I am considering to buy Quest 3 but I have my doubts for these streaming headsets instead. So is the image as clear as in G2 and is there much latency?

    • @Destarn
      @Destarn  5 месяцев назад

      As shown and said in the video clarity is basically the same, except it’s across the whole screen. As for latency depends on how you want to do it and your networking if you go wireless.
      Wired you can go with a very high bitrate giving what is basically a compression artefact free image with no considerable latency. Wireless (with virtual desktop) you can get pretty good quality compression wise with under 60ms latency - not an issue for me but it varies from person to person.

Also dumb tiny sweet spot that won't even go to 70mm ipd is gone, bye bye. Q3 visuals are way way better due to pancakes and bigger IPD

  • @readifdumb
    @readifdumb 11 месяцев назад +1

    I think that want everyone needs to factor in is not just specs, but WMR. It’s not supported, the next Windows 11 update is apparently bricking the G2. You also have to factor in that I’ve had to turn off SteamVR Room, motion vector, reduce quality to 50%, and do all sorts of other tweaks just to get it to work. Most times opening SteamVR I’d just freeze or lag out. The visuals itself are blurry and text have god rays and are basically unreadable without straining your eyes. Pass through is abysmal, and having to hold up controllers to see circles of a 240 p grey reality is horrid. There is not world where I’d recommend the G2 in the current day. The resolution difference is so minor.
    Thinks like comfort or battery can be fixed with a good strap, and more 3rd parties support Quest products.
    Don’t buy a G2 in 2024, you’ve been warned.

    • @Destarn
      @Destarn  11 месяцев назад +1

      For sure, though WMR can remain enabled as long as you disable feature updates, both in W10 and 11.

    • @readifdumb

      @@Destarn I think that when a company and a platform/program no longer supports a headset that needs both, it's not worth it. If you have your headset break, need a replacement part, or need an upgrade, a bug fix, or anything really, having no support is terrible. I mean WMR is not even in a good state atm, and it bugs out all the time in conjunction with SteamVR. WMR also has issues with finding games to launch from your PC.
      I mean I'm lucky that I don't have automatic updates turned on, but if I ever run into an issue that requires a Windows update, I'm screwed tbh.
      If you already have a G2, do your best to keep it and deal with it (which is what I'm doing), but if don't, It's not worth "upgrading" to one over a Quest 3 imo. The pancake lenses by themselves are insane for visual clarity, which is sorely needed on any old VR headset.

      @@readifdumb I don’t think anyone would see changing to the G2 from a Quest 3 an upgrade. My video was mean merely as a comparison of both to see if it’s worth to change from G2 to Q3. Because some people hate Meta/Facebook, don't want to have an account, don't want compression, want good audio, and care a lot about flight sims/racing sims, and resolution. On paper all these things could lead someone to buy a G2, so my comment was more as an extra warning alongside your video to fully cover it.
      I have managed to get my G2 working through trial and error, but I haven't fixed the blurry visuals, and still have issues with controllers, passthrough, weight, cord, etc.

    "DCS World - Reverb G2 vs Quest 3" - yo there is like 1/5 of the film that covers these headsets in terms of playing dcs with it. Half of the video is about audio and *ROOMSCALE GAMING*, I repeat, the name of the video is "DCS World - Reverb G2 vs Quest 3"...

    • @Destarn
      @Destarn  11 месяцев назад

      There’s only one section with DCS in the name but the content within is still relevant to DCS. It uses the screens and my biggest issues regarding the Q3 was about audio so there was a bit more rambling about that, sure. Sounding like you’re flying a WW2 plane without a canopy on SRS because of the issues described within the video isn’t that great. And considering that it’s a decent improvement for DCS over the G2 but a massive for roomscale gaming I found it important to mention since it’s a massive strength of this headset even if it goes a bit off topic of our beloved flight sim. Thanks for the input though!
