I first heard this song from Mr. Bean's Holiday, I always preferred the Bobby Darin version even then but now after the Beyond the Sea episode of Black Mirror, I have a newfound appreciation for this song. Its timeless.

Charles Trenet was inspired by Étang de Thau near Montpellier. It is not a sea but he had this idea in a train while seeing the Etang. It is really beautiful and inspiring. If you go to France I advised you to visit Sète, Palavas,...

Yes for me it is also about reflection. I can see myself in 1946 or 1947, just after WWII and everything breaths great hope for a new future but when we look at the sea we realise it was there always and it was there when that war happened. The sea saw it all even with the bright sun on a clear day somewhere in 1947 the sound f small waves crushing on the shore seems like the faint voices of those not here to enjoy that bright future. That is a bit what this song does to me.
I can imagine it after going on a train trip, then losing my ticket, then hitchhiking through France before watching a movie premiere in Cannes and immediately going to the beach afterwards.

Four or five years ago I stood on the ramparts of the fortress town Saint Malo and watched the March winds carry immense waves against the seawall. With a medieval town behind me and an ancient sea in front of me, it's clear this battle had been waged since St. Malo was a village. (Do a search of "waves" and "Saint Malo" here on YT to see what I mean). In the back of my mind was Charles Trenet singing "La mer."

I was 7/8 when I first heard this in Penge, London , with 2 girl friends. We didn’t speak French but played it over and over and learned the lyrics phonetically. Later as a poor teen , in a poor family , I promised myself that I would retire to France one day. I was lucky enough to succeed in business to choose to retire at 50 y o, ( at my wife’s suggestion) I am still here at 82 .

It speaks mediterranean, it speaks joie de vivre, it speaks summer days, blue skies, dejeuners sur l'herbe, but also 1950s and 60s flower-power, and always small tear from how time may passes: a la recherche du temps perdus.
