  • Man Bites Dog, also known as C'est arrivé près de chez vous, is a truly shocking film. It's equal bits hilarious and gut-churning. If you're up for it, you should check it out this Halloween season!
My next video essay style video will be a deep dive into Robert Bresson. Get ready for some serious french art-house film discussions!
Note: I am not sponsored by NordVPN but I do use it and I love it.
This is all Fair Use, yadda yadda yadda. I mean, I'm basically advertising the film. Honestly I should be paid!

I found this film back in the 90s while looking through an old school (not at the time) VHS store. The front cover (if you've seen it you'll know) jumped out at me. There was some good reviews on the back so completely blind I bought it. The film blew me away. The flip around two thirds into the film is so dark and the way it had drawn me in actually made me feel complicit. No other film before or since has made me feel that disturbed. It's not a film I tend recommend a lot but it's a genius peice of writing, acting and film-making. I hate to say it but if these guys had been American they would have been huge.

Im from Belgium and stumbled upon this movie many years ago, however it never faded in memory. Great movie, recommended it to many people. Ironically back then there was a show on tv called 'man bijt hond' about the everyday life of people living here, the name is a literal translation from 'man bites dog'. Remarkable.

I'm Belgian and this movie has reached a cult status for anyone old enough to have known it in the nineties. Quotes of this movie are part of a lot of people's vocabulary and references. When we saw this movie as teenagers, we focused on this burlesque quotes, the cynical references, but were not as disturbed by the dark violence, as you analyze it in this video - although today, in my forties, clearly I agree with you. We've grown sensitive ;) I don't know why we weren't that shocked; maybe because the movie is so "real" that it appears almost surrealistic in the end, and Surrealism is a big part of our culture, even the construction of our country is surrealistic :)

Every breakdown of this movie seems to emphasize the “disturbing” aspects, but it’s a dark comedy. this movie is driven by conversations. Don’t watch this if you’re out for gratuitous, shocking violence.

I met Remy Belvaux and Jean-Marc Chenut (who plays the perchman) back in the late 80's during my art studies at "La Cambre". They were both incredible cartoonists and great human beings and I enjoyed hanging out with them.

Excellent analysis of a truly extraordinary film, I saw MBD in the 90’s and it permanently changed my understanding of mass media.

I love this film dearly and have watched it more often than is healthy, probably. Once I even watched it with my parents while we were on vacation together. My father found it to be absolutely hysterical and my mother fell asleep. Anyway, Poelvoorde delivers such a stellar performance, it's absolutely spellbinding. The whole cast is great, but his is a career-best performance, right at the start of his career. He is charming, funny, gentle, friendly, volatile, psychotic and without any remorse. He really gets you to like him, even when he commits unspeakable acts. Your analysis of the viewer laughing because they are afraid is absolutely on point. I was never really able to phrase my thoughts in this manner, but at one point your laughter will be nervous and fearful.

Honestly the most shocking part of the movie was when Ben in the second half while drinking says that you need five times the weight of a child in ballast to keep him sunken when in the introduction he told that its four for children and five was for old people. It was exactly here that I knew his malevolence knew no bounds and really felt betrayed. That or my subtitles were bad idk

Dead Mans shoes and Room for Romeo Brass. Shane Meadows is the only OTHER Director I know that can flip funny into very dark in a milli tone as good as this. Also This is England. Highly recommend them.

This wasn’t my favorite or most disturbing film I’ve seen far worst but I appreciate what this film did showing the life of a serial killer in a documentary format is actually quite interesting seeing that persons day in a life plus the dark humor added as well.

I know it has nothing to do with the video, but the title reminded me an actual storry about how a drunk russian hobo got atacked by a stray german shepherd and the hobo killed the dog by biting it's neck.

This Movie reminds me of “the last horror movie” were you also follow a serial killer. I would recommend that movie if you haven’t seen it. Man bites dog is great in many ways but it’s age is definitely starting to show no doubt especially in the gore and blood department. Not that I know what a aftermath of it would look like but first time I saw it I thought it was food on her stomach haha in the scene where they cut up the lady and force the husband to look but no matter what the movie is very very disturbing even tho you know it’s not real btw very underrated channel and some great content. Keep up the good work
