A random and tragic thought occurs to me; in the psychic awakenings story Ragnar did behead Ghazkull, so it's entirely possible that the Imperium genuinely thought they had killed him for good. The idea that Yarrick thought it was finally over and, through fatigue and age catching up with him, passing in his sleep as that weight is finally lifted from his shoulders, does gain a tragic spin when Ghaz returns, stronger than ever with his new body.

Without his driving need to put an end to the threat to the Imperium that is Ghazghkull leading huge Waaaghs, I can easily see Yarrick finally accepting retirement and ending up passing in his sleep.

As much as I HATE the fact that they killed him off, there is a part of me that hopes he was killed by Angron, specifically as a way to motivate Thraka to declare a WAAAAGH against Angron for 'robbing him' of his rival. I am fairly certain GW had plans for several more "Warzone" Books meant to flesh out the conflicts of 9th Edition, using the same format as Octarius and Nachmund. White Dwarf released two Armies of Renown for the Necrons with two for the World Eaters coming in the following volumes.
From that, I think they meant to release a Warzone: Nephilim (Pariah Nexus) and a Warzone: Armageddon book(s), to give some narrative behind Szarekh and Angron's return. Yarrick's fate would have probably been explained there. But with the bad rep, these Books got and the fanbase growing tired of Campaign books bringing more Matched Play modification, they back-pedalled on those and worked on Arks of Omen instead. And yes, I know Yarrick wasn't supposed to be on Armageddon at the time, but again, that wouldn't be the most non-sensical retcon ever made for the sake of plot (Hello again Decimus, how's that attack on Ulthwe coming along ?)
It's the one explanation that makes sense because...well, Yarrick isn't the only character whose model and rules were shafted out of Codex: Astra Militarum, yet he's the only one getting lore about it. Pask is no longer available, but the Codex confirms he's around and kicking, for example.
So they had to want to do something with Yarrick, given that artwork of commission for the "De Gloria Yarrick" page.
With that in mind, the current situation is probably GW being vague so they can reintroduce that plotline later, or bring back Yarrick in a good old "death twist".

I have faith in the “no resolution” part. I think that’s the point. You as the reader are supposed to feel the frustration. And when they have gazgkhul in the next book you’re going to identify with that frustration and understand whatever motivations drive his decisions. It’s real life. Sometimes stories end abruptly and with no closure. But great story can be built from that.

  • @malwick3106
    @malwick3106 Год назад +29

Personally I am hoping that Angron did kill off Yarrick. I do hope it gets it's own story to it soon in all honesty. Yarrick deserves to have his final chapter told. The reasons I want it to be Angron who does him in is it is a true enemy of the imperium and definitely someone who Yarrick's superiors would send their best, so Yarrick, to fight. I also like it because this shifts the grudge that Ghazghkull had with Yarrick to Angron. It is the only way I could imagine Ghazghkull accepting he defeated Yarrick now is by defeating Angron. Let's all be honest with ourselves here, it would feel very empty if Yarrick won the fight with Ghazghkull by launching mass artillery down on his location until the hole is deep enough that it would make for a great place to begin the construction of a hive city. There was never going to be a situation where Yarrick 1v1's Ghazghkull and wins. Now Ghazghkull vs Angron I could see that being a much closer fight and a much more exciting read. These are just my thoughts and I would love to hear what others think of them.

Even with juvenat treatments he was just a “normal” human and wasn’t just taking it easy somewhere. The smart thing to do at this point would be to tell a story in which Yarrick is officially declared dead after having been framed for some kind of heresy and the Imperium is actively trying to kill him to maintain this story (because it would be a huge moral loss if people found out Yarrick turned traitor) while Yarrick himself is on the run and trying to clear his name and more importantly stop the Chaos plot that framed him from achieving whatever dastardly goal he discovered, hence why they framed him, to discredit him and ideally get him killed. In the end Yarrick succeeds and is officially resurrected as a saint (in name only, because he never actually died) which not only elevates his status in the Imperium it also causes the Orks to get really excited because they get to fight the new and improved Yarrick version 2.0, a perception which may or may not be empowering Yarrick in some way.

Question, unrelated to the video: MANY years ago, I read a book that involved a Space Marine Chapter, who's name I have forgotten. They supposedly happened upon either a shard of the Emperor, or the physical body itself. It was not long after the Horus heresy where they found him: dark hair, chiseled features wearing a necklace with the imperial eagles. Mumbling phrases like, "do I live, do I dream?". He was covered in wounds that were similar to the Emperors wounds after he fought Horus. The Chapter returned all of their forces back to their Fortress Monastery and haven't left since.
I remember reading it in absolute fascination. Unfortunately I was vacationing when I read it and left the book in my Hotel room years ago. I know it sounds insane... does the story ring a bell? I wish to continue it.

I almost feel like by having Yarrick's death happen off screen they're setting us up for some sort of inevitable return. Like, I could see Trazyn having taken Yarrick for his collection, only to later drop him off somewhere convenient before Ghaz gets a little too "The Beast" like or something.
It definitely feels like a shame to never see the Yarrick/Ghaz arc come to a conclusion though.

One with false leads, conflicting testimonies, intercepted cables contradicting official messaging, decrypted insider leaks, etc. that taken together not only reveal the true nature of Yarrick's end but actually foment a larger and more noteworthy turn of the plot wheel.

Huge missed opportunity. If BL had released a book 6 months ago and in the final act, Yarrick had died, that would have been a twist no one saw coming. The Siege of Terra series can't have a twist as we know the ending, the final showdown of Yarrick could have been fantastic for the setting, showing no one is safe. It will likely be revisited in the Angron Ark of Omens book, I say that because they're really going to need to pad out the series

I personally think that Yarrick’s death is being written and GW for whatever reason thought it was a good idea/ had to drop the fact that he was dead before whatever medium the scene takes place in was released.
Personally I’d like if they split the difference between having him die to Ghaz or Angron. Let the two meet one final time in a battle they know will be their last, maybe Yarrick admits he respects Ghazkull’s tenacity or something, only for Angron to come in and kil Yarrick. It resolves the rivalry, it gives Yarrick a proper goodbye and it give Ghazkull a motivation that could carry him into becoming a Krorc.

I think how they are handling it is actually pretty great. As the author mentioned the Yarrick/Ghazgull story line is pretty much played out, and having them duel to the death finally would be, I don't know, meh. But having Yarrick die and his Ork nemesis declaring vengeance on his behalf against Angron is pretty awesome. And since it happened offscreen, there is even the possibility that Yarrick faked his death, somehow intuiting that Ghaz would want vengeance against anyone who took his favorite toy away other than him. Only for Ghaz and Angron to beat each other's armies to pieces, with maybe Yarrick swooping in to mop of the pieces and have a good laugh. Pretty sure even Ghaz would find that funny.

I don’t think his death being “announced” off screen is bad.
They just need to do something with it eventually.
I like it being that Angron did it, and using that to kick start a Gaskhul v Angron rivalry.
    Alternatively.
Yarrick faking his death at the hands of Angron to trick the Orks into going after the primarch could be a fantastic twist. Even would explain why it’s so hushed, because it’s a trick.

1:33 Taking a look at that picture closely, that skull does look like it has service-studs on it. So even if the jury's out on whether or not Angron killed Yarrick, we can safely say that isn't his skull at least.
I'll admit that it is disappointing to see him killed off-screen, especially since this means that now Ghaz's and Yarrick's rivalry will never see resolution; and damn if that wasn't a fun story in of itself. That a single, otherwise ordinary human could earn the respect/admiration/fear of the Orks to such an extent in the WH40K is beyond badass. For m part, I can't rightfully say how I would have ended Yarrick's story... Though it would likely involve one last show-down between Old Bale Eye and Ghaz.

  • @setojurai

Alright here's how I would've handled it if I got to write the lore. Yarrik doesn't die in glorious combat with Gazgul. No, instead he's found atop his baneblade, still holding his last vigil. Still as stone and not breathing anymore. This causes the Imperial advance to suddenly halt as they start gathering around the fortress tank. The Orkz pause, witnessing something bizzare coming from their beloved foes and move in to investigate, hoping for a trap. A trap that is never sprung. Gazgul sees his old nemesis atop the Baneblade, a Medicae slowly shaking their head to a nearby officer who removes his hat in respect. This causes EVERYONE, Human and Ork alike to doff headgear in a breif moment of silence for Gazgul's "Favorite Humie".
This will of course spawn several short stories of various humans and orkz relating their stories about Yarrik (not in the same scene of course, but let it be ambiguous as to when it occurs, and the humans and orks are NOT sharing a camp). Gazgul withdraws his forces for one full day to allow "Da Humies ta do da propa fing" and afterwards they return to fighting, with Gazgul loudly proclaiming that the glory of this battle, is Yarrik's, "Da Only Humie ta be a proper Ork Fight". Which of course nets us a very savage fight scene where both sides go all out. No soppy feelings, just pure rage and firepower spectacle of the IG and Orkz of Gazgul's WAAAAAAAGH duking it out WWI style.

I can imagine Thraka seeking out Angron, coming into contact with chaos, disrupting rituals, even gaining the attention of Khorne at one point. I don't know how it would end, the idea of Gork and Mork being pulled in as some have mentioned might make the setting suddenly to elaborate. I think it's due to a mismatched or rearrangement of material that's led to the current situation. If Yarrick was killed by Angron, then it's probably the World Eaters book or an Arks of Omen book that tells the story and maybe were originally supposed to come out before the Astra Militarum book, but due to demand or issues or whatever, the news of his death precedes the story that led to it.
I think it's been established that the flow of lore, rules, and models starts with art design for the models, then lore, then rules. GW emphasized in a business meeting that they're a miniatures company first.
It's likely that when they came to the Imperial Guard range refresh, they decided to discontinue Yarrick instead of redesign him.
But we'll see. I'm fairly confident that Angron did kill him or. something else happened and that it's all one big mystery for a reveal later. Hell, for all we know he'll come back as a skeleton commander kept alive only by waaagh magic or some nonsense.

Ghazghkull and Yarrick fighting each other isn't what's special about their story - arch nemesises are fairly common across the setting. What's special about these two is the moment when Ghazghkull lets Yarrick go, and that would be ruined by one of them finishing off the other.
Yarrick dying off screen is pretty much the least expected development, and it creates real anticipation for the writers to make it good. I am not saying they won't mess it up, but I am a lot more interested to see how it actually plays out, than in some final duel or whatever. I think your points are all incredibly valid. I think you're right about all of the issues you take. But I have to think they wouldn't be so lazy as to just trash a character like yarrick. I mean they had to go out of there way to make it known that he died. Wouldn't doing that be for a reason? Like don't you think they have a plan that is bigger than just a basic off screen death? Like maybe this is just part 1 of a multi step story that begins with yarricks "supposed" death or even his actual death. Not knowing the story does leave this open to a plot mystery or the possibility of using yarricks death to push the reader in a specific direction. Idk and I have no theories, I just can't imagine they would do it that way
