As someone who works in a radio newsroom today (yes, there are some left), this is a fascinating time capsule. With digital editing, and in many cases no unions, one person can do the work of the three or four shown here. Now, though, there is a lot of piggyback with TV. I know at ABC, TV reporters are required to file a radio piece. Could not help but chuckle at the "we don't consider radio a stepchild" comment. We've come a long way since 1969, some good, some bad. Great video!!

I miss the old news chimes of the old big three, and still make it a habit to turn the radio at the top of the hour for the best news. Unfortunately today in the USA it's only on NPR.

I remeber when I grew up in Lansing, Michigan in the 70's WVIC-AM 730 (and FM 94.9), the Top 40 station most teens like myself there were listening to, was affiliated with the ABC Contemporary network (WVIC no longer exists). ABC Contemporary's news aired about 40 minutes past each hour, and in addition to Paul Harvey they had Howard Cosell and Rona Barrett.
A rival adult contemporary station in East Lansing, WFMK 99.1, was affiliated with ABC's FM network (but not anymore today, naturally).

I wonder if President Nixon's departure from Pakistan might have been broadcast live on the ABC networks as well as being excerpted for horuly newscasts on each of the four networks.

Yes, it's now such a Mickey Mouse operation (no pun intended). Maybe the Federal government should pick it up next, or at least after the economic crisis is settled.
