- Jame Kalm was out doing what it is that he does, when he became aware of, what must be, an alignment of the stars. In this case it’s two stars from the “Lone Star State”. Myron Stout Charcoal Drawings at Peter Freeman Inc. is a rare glimpse into the drawing practice of one of the most inscrutable American artists of the Post War period. Born in Denton Texas in 1908, Stout migrated to New York to partake in the burgeoning art scene. He studied with Hans Hofmann and the earliest of these drawings from the late 1940s display the Hofmannesque “push-pull” compositional dynamism. These works, found by the family in the artist’s studio after his death, were never meant to be displayed during the artist’s lifetime. They map the evolution of his style from Abstract Expressionist figurative subjects to Stout’s mature formalistic quirky geometric work.
The other Texan is Forrest Bess. Born in 1911 in Bay City, this body of work all date from 1946, the year Bess started developing his visionary vocabulary. This intimate show titled “Jack was my first art collector.” Forrest Bess - From the Estate of Dr. Jack Weinberg and is an homage to a very important early champion of the artist’s work. All but two of these paintings are post card size paintings on panel, the larger pieces present a strange Surrealistic amalgam of bizarre figuration and mystical abstraction, and are the first manifestations of a creative spirit that, through his belief in alchemy and primitive rituals, transformed Bess into a contemporary shamanistic hero. This program was recorded January 31, 2025. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Thank you Kate! Those frames for Forrest Bess smaller works look incredible and heightened visual🎉 Thanks James Kalm! for introducing me to F.Bess work r.i.p. makes me think of the work of Peter Gallow another influencial painter who thinks outside the box 🎁☑️
Thanks for the tour James! Dug that mobile techno dude w. all his gear prowling the Union Square. Forrest Bess pieces were somehow very intimate and comforting. Dug the massive frames on those tiny pieces. Thanks JK, thanks Kate.
