    Good afternoon sir, I just wanted to thank you for the information. A few months back you gave me some information about the academy that was very helpful to me prior to me starting the academy. I wanted to let you know I graduate the academy this upcoming Friday and the info you gave me stood true. I appreciate it. Thank you again and stay safe

      Good morning Officer Russell! Before I went to the academy, I never saw a video or webpage that gave out the little details that could help someone survive the academy. This is the purpose of my videos. I am very happy for you and I appreciate the feedback very much. Like I said, if I am able to help just one person, all these is worth it!
      Please be safe out there! Don't forget what I said about what to do right after graduation: Get your stuff ready, visit your station, get familiar with the people in the station, bring donuts (even if they have 30 boxes of donuts and bagels in the lunch room), drive around your area of responsibility, study your terrain, buildings, street names, don't be salty and remember, you're a boot until they say you're no longer one! So always be respectful and pay attention! You won't realize it yet but all these little things will play an important role during your probation. Good luck and I salute you!!!

    Hello Everyone. I have been getting some questions via email. Some of the questions are really outstanding in my opinion and should be shared with everyone especially those who are about to jump into training. For this reason I have decided to share some of the questions and corresponding answers with respect to the privacy of those who asked:
    1. Do you remember by any chance what the medical exam included? Medical Exam - Hair sample, urine sample, paperwork to fill out, treadmill run, hearing/audio test, eye/visual/color blind test, you may get shots (immunization, etc.), breathing test… wear appropriate undergarments and rubber shoes/running shoes. If you haven't done your Psychological Evaluation, they might do it the same day as your Medical Exam.
    2. When you go the academy, do they do another medical examination i.e. hearing, vision, and etc? There are no more medical tests while in the academy. However, don't be surprised if they do a random "Whiz Quiz" more commonly known as a urine test.
    3. I will start training in 2 weeks, what do you suggest me doing at this point? Know the LAPD Mission Statement by heart and be able to recite it while doing push-ups, Know the LAPD Core Values, Memorize LAPD Phonetics (A=Adam, B=Boy, etc.) which are very different from military phonetics and practice your facing movements... if you know all these the first few weeks will be a little easier.
    4. Does most of the academy take place at ARTC? Most academics and physical training are done in ARTC. Tactics are mostly done in the Davis Training Center in Granada Hills. Every now and then, you'll find yourself in the Elysian Park Police Academy Training Center (By Dodger Stadium) but mostly for ceremonial purposes like Badge Day and Graduation. The first few weeks will be spent heavily in ARTC though as you learn the fundamentals.
    Folks, PLEASE make sure you watch the 3rd video when it gets published, you will find the rest of the answers there and it will give you a WEALTH of information to prepare you more in the coming weeks, while you're in and even after graduation! Thank you very much, good luck and welcome to the LAPD Family!

      Hello Mr. Mills. The LAPD is very specific on it's educational requirements which states:
      "Graduation from a U.S. High School, G.E.D. or equivalent from a U.S. institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate. A two- or four-year college degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution may be substituted for the high school requirement."
      What I would recommend/suggest you to do is either get your High School diploma and transcripts for "accreditation." But before you do that try to contact a recruiter or at least send an email through www.joinlapd.com . What they want to see is that your HS diploma is comparable to a High School institution in the US.
      This is actually a very valid and interesting question you asked Mr. Mills and please keep us posted. I'm sure a lot of other potential candidates have similar questions. Thank you so much and good luck!

      Thank you very much Sir. I try my best to educate all those who are interested, based of course on my own personal experience. Some of the questions I honestly do not know the answer to but I try to find it all in the efforts of dissemination of information. When I was preparing for the academy, I didn't see any video online that would help me figure out the "little" details. I had to painstakingly do research, ask the right questions and even make mistakes and get punished to learn the answers to my questions. The purpose of my channel is so that candidates would already learn and know what I didn't. I try to make it easier for them so they don't have to go through what I went through. Every now and then, I would get a negative comment, nothing educational, just hurtful. I delete those right away because it does not serve the purpose of my channel. The good news is that 99% of the time, people just want to learn, get educated and they are very appreciative like you! This is what keeps me going! Thank you for the nice words.

      We usually run 2-3 times a week but this could be more if your class tends to underperform (Physically or mentally). Your distance will gradually increase over time but they will start you off at about 1-2 miles. You will run inside the academy track, stairs and out on the streets as well. While running, they will test you a lot on Mission Statements, LAPD Policies, Directions (North, South, East, West of the streets you're on), etc. in the beginning. Towards the latter half of training, the testings will be replaced with cadences.

      I believe the training for an armed security personnel is about 40 hours if I'm not mistaken.
      The training to become an LAPD officer is about 6 months plus probation.
      Not because you get "hired" means they give you a pistol and make you patrol the streets on day one. It's a process Mr. Dizzoe. The first 6 months after you get "hired" you will be subjected to intense training and you're not even considered a Police Officer, you're a "Recruit Officer."
      I hope this clarifies things for you Mr. Dizzoe Sir, again thanks for the statement and be healthy and safe out there.

      Hello Miss Suzy. Thanks for this excellent question. Yes, this is the sad truth that no one wants to talk about but your Drill Instructors will definitely mention this to you during your six months of adventure in the academy!
      Passing the academy does not guarantee many years of employment in the LAPD. Like I always say, LAPDs filter is not the academy, it's the probationary period. You may be one of the best in your class, but it doesn't mean anything out on the streets. There are many factors that contribute to an officer being unable to pass the probationary period including repeated errors in tactics, common sense out in the field, how you react in tense situations, immaturity is a big issue and even being assigned to "Boot Killer" Training Officers who will dump "Unsats" (Unsatisfactory Performance) on your records because they think you're not doing good and/or that you'll just end up as a liability for the department.
      Police Officers are a rare breed Miss Flores, the cops that have been with the department for a long time, those are field-tested officers, the cream of the crop, they are a very tight-knit community that is very unwelcoming. They survived the tough streets on their watch where a lot failed.
      Although I wish everyone good luck Miss Suzy Flores, I hate to say this but it also helps to have a Plan B.

You don't need to have mastered the english language and in fact they discourage the use of "big words" especially during the written test. Having said that, it is good to have a basic working knowledge of the english language. But FYI, knowing how to speak spanish is a big bonus and will definitely work for you. Think of the best answers you can give to questions like why you want to join the LAPD, how you reacted in emergency situations, how you work under stressful situations and the like. Also, pay attention to little instructions like "sit on the third chair of the second table to your left"... this may sound innocent instructions but they are nonetheless, part of the test! @LAPDOfficer1118  4 года назад +1

      @@malachishakur That sounds like a good plan. However, instead of the number of paragraphs, they will be looking more into the meat of your response. They want to get an idea of who you are, how you structure your sentence and paragraphs, they want to peek into your moral values and they want to see if you are able to write proper police reports in the future!
      Here's a tip Mr. Shakur:
      Don't try to impress them by using big words! That's a fatal mistake! If you spell these big words wrong or use it in error, it won't make you look smart. They like people to use simple words because they want officers to be able to submit reports that everyone in court would understand, especially the jury!
      Also, make sure you answer all the questions in their entirety otherwise, they'll just disregard your response. This is very important in police reports.

      Hello Mr. Martinez. My background investigation didn't take very long. About 6-8 weeks if I guessed it correctly. Some of my fellow Recruit Officers took a lot longer, like a few months. This again, all depends on how many places of residence, personal activities, number of jobs, employers you've had in the past couple of years. I spoke briefly I think with my BI just to clarify some information but other than that, no real communication. I've had fellow Recruit Officers who never even met or spoke to their background investigators. I hope this answers your question Sir. Thanks...

In 1974 Commander Paul Gillen died in a helicopter crash he was piloting for a Swat team. I guess you can be a Commander and keep your wings. Hello. Hope you’re a staying safe out there. I’m interested in applying for LAPD. Just a few questions.
    1.Are they still hiring giving the political climate?
    2. Do they place you at the station of their choice or do they consider where you live/preference of where the candidate would like be stationed in ?
    3. Lastly, how long are you in patrol ? Let’s say if you’re looking to promote to detective

    • @LAPDOfficer1118
      @LAPDOfficer1118  4 года назад

      Hello! Thank you for these excellent questions! I'll try to answer them for you:
      1. Yes the LAPD is continuously hiring. The political climate does not affect the LAPD's need for new recruits as older officers resign or retire. The need for new officers is constant and in fact a new class starts every 28 days.
      2. Before graduating from the academy, you will be given, sort of, a "wish-list" of up to three division assignments. However, in the end they will be assigning you to a division that badly needs new recruits and when they do, they will actually consider your place of residence. They do not want you to be too far from home yet not too close to your residential address that people will recognize you or you're a familiar figure in the neighborhood.
      3. You need to have at least 4-5 years of patrol experience before you're given the opportunity to move up the ladder as a detective or sergeant. Performance, skills, politics, demand, etc. all play an important role in this process.
      Thanks again Sir and I hope I answered your questions to your satisfaction.

      Hello. The answer is yes and the LAPD has very specific rules about this:
      The City of Los Angeles requires that a Police Officer candidate be a United States citizen, or that a non-citizen be a permanent resident alien who, in accordance with the requirements of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), is eligible and has applied for citizenship. During the selection process, each non-citizen is required to prove that USCIS accepted his/her application for citizenship prior to the date the Police Officer written test was taken. California State law requires that citizenship be granted within three years after the employment application date. For information regarding citizenship requirements, contact the USCIS.

    What are the written tests like throughout the academy?

    • @LAPDOfficer1118
      @LAPDOfficer1118  Год назад +1

      Hello Nugget. Thanks for the question.
      Yours is a simple question but there are many factors involved so here is my response:
      During academy training you will have about 2-3 short quizzes or tests every week but every month or so there will be a big written examination which you really need to study for. They are all written exams but towards the end of training, there would be a lot of scenarios where you exercise and practice the tactics you were taught. Some are simply for training but some are Pass or Fail tests. There are many reasons why a candidate could fail scenario tests, for example, not removing your finger from the trigger after shooting, shooting an innocent civilian, etc. The Ambush Scenario and the Night Time Shotgun Scenario are tests that would really challenge your skills and patience. When you fail a first attempt, they make you sign a piece of paper that says if you fail again, you will be removed from the academy immediately. Luckily, most Recruit Officers quickly learn from their mistakes and are able to recover after the second attempt. They always remind us during scenarios that in the academy, it's pass or fail, but out on the streets, it's life or death!
      The big exams depend on what you've been studying in the past few weeks. Subjects include illegal substances, citations, domestic violence, illegal firearms, concealed weapons, etc. The questions are often multiple choice. To be physically successful in the academy make sure you don't neglect physical core exercises like running, pushups and situps. To be academically successful in the academy, try to join study groups, use flash cards, take lots of notes and pay attention to detail.
      I hope this answers your question.

      Hello Sir. Thanks for the question.
      I think this is a question Sir that only you would be able to answer. A delicate balance of pros and cons that would matter within yourself.
      When you ask an LAPD officer he/she would say, LAPD is the best for you!
      When you ask a deputy or an officer from the Sheriff's department, they would say LASD or nothing!
      But in my humble opinion Sir, the key to this answer is within you.
      My suggestion Sir, if you would take it, is this, talk to several officers from both organizations... in person... not online.
      Ask questions regarding benefits, pay, employment stability, turnover rate and most of all, how each agency would meet your long term goal.
      Good luck Sir and I wish you all the best.

      @LAPDOfficer1118  3 года назад

      Hello Mr. Valdez.
      Here's a link that gives you good information regarding your question:
      www.joinlapd.com/events-prep/step-3-physical-fitness-qualifier-continuous-physical-prep-pfq
      Basically, what they mean by "maximum" is just that, the maximum number you can perform in the designated time limit or the shortest time for a prescribed distance.
      For example:
      For the Sit-Ups, a good score would be about 42-46 per minute while a poor score will be 33-37 per minute. Anything that falls in between is fair. For Push-Ups, 37-44 per minute is good, 22-27 is poor. For the 1.5 mile run, 10.34-11.27 minutes is good, 12.53-13.58 is poor and finally, for the 300m sprint, 51-54 seconds is good and poor is a minute or more.
      As long as you score above 50 on the PFQ you're good. I can't give you a good benchmark because the academy will factor in age, height and percentage of body fat into your score.
      I hope this helps Sir.

      @LAPDOfficer1118  3 года назад +1

      Hello Mr. Sajid Rahman. The screening, process and training is very similar if not the same to become a reserve officer.
      If you're 21, I assume that you're applying for Level I or II Officer Reserve (250 Hours of training).
      If you're only 18, I assume you're applying for Level III Reserve (Unarmed, 240 hours of training). Until you turn 21, you cannot be an armed reserve officer.
      During my interview I noticed some wearing military boots, I don't think it's an issue. It's how you present yourself among other factors.
      In our class, there were a couple of Officers who had asthma but made it through the medical screening process.
      Good luck Sir and I hope this helps.

    • @LAPDOfficer1118
      @LAPDOfficer1118  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the question Mr. Gutierrez. On Orientation Day, one week before the Black Line or the first day of academy training, you will receive your gear and supplies, most of which you paid for. This includes your boots. When I knew what brand and style they wanted us to use for uniformity, I ordered a couple more pairs online. The reason I did that is because I wanted to have reserves in case they break, wear out, etc. and it also gave me the opportunity to focus on studying instead of polishing my boots every night. Because I had extras, I polished my boots on weekends and once during the weekday trainings instead of everyday. These are the same boots you will use out on patrol after graduation. I used all the boots alternately so that at the end of training, none of them were brand new from the box. I hope this helps Sir.

      Hello Mr. Andrew, congratulations, at this point you can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel!
      In my experience and this was in 2018, I received a letter telling me to report for "Family Orientation Day" and "Black Line."
      Family Orientation Day is where you come in with your family and they give you details on what to expect for the next 6 months, for some weird reason, there's a lot of emphasis on holidays and schedule. It is also the day you receive most of your gear and sign up for insurance coverages, charity programs, etc. A lot of paperwork this day and they start very early, like 5:00 AM early!
      A week after orientation day is the black line, this is the actual beginning of your training. You will be wearing the black suit for this day. It will be a "fun" day as you will learn in a couple of weeks.
      My initial reaction was... "YES!!!".... my reaction immediately after that was "Oh Shit!"... I guess that makes me human.
      Here's a tip:
      BI's are very busy and they could easily misplace or lose your paperwork so have extra copies or everything!
      Again, good luck and WELCOME the the LAPD family!

      Hello Mr. Navarro. I am not an authority nor an expert on this but let me try to address your question. The LAPD color blind test is or similar to the Ishiwara Color Blind Test if I'm not mistaken. There were three sets, Red/Green, Blue/Yellow and Total Color Blind. They try to detect if a candidate has color blindness and if yes, how severe? I am not quite sure if there are any alternatives or waiver to this as this is obviously very critical out in the field.

A two- or four-year college degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution may be substituted for the high school requirement." As for the interview… there will be three people sitting in front of you. They will ask questions like "Do you believe you can take a life? Can you recall a time where you were the first person to act in an emergency situation?" Have you ever had a time when you disagreed with a co-worker? If so what happened?" Questions of this nature. They may even give you a scenario and ask you what you would do in specific situations. Be ready to explain yourself and justify your actions. The questions are different for everyone. Try your best not to go back on your previous answers in an attempt to change it. If you keep stumbling with your answers you'll probably crumble when you have to explain yourself in court. Overall the interviewers want to ask you questions just to get a basic idea of who you are and where your morals stand.
      Dress properly! Be respectful, be smart, pay attention! Most of all, never lie, never hide anything from your past... they already know who you are.

PT is not done daily, it's done about 3-4 times a week and the closer you get to graduation day (About 2 months before Badge Day) you'll be doing very little PT as you now focus on scenarios, tactics and academics. However, depending on how your class performs, this may change! Push-ups are a daily thing especially in the first couple of months. If your class is well organized and performs very well, you may see less of these later on as in 20 push ups in the morning and that's about it. I hope this helps.

These questions may range from why you want to become an LAPD Officer, how you were the first to react in an emergency situation, to any instances where you disagreed with a superior as an employee... questions of these nature.
      Be sure to answer the questions in their ENTIRETY! If you do not, then they cannot trust you to properly fill out paperwork in the future. Do not use big words, if you spell these words wrong or use it incorrectly, these will count against you! It is better to write with simple, understandable words that a "jury" will easily grasp. You do not have to answer all questions in essay form but you need to be able to express yourself and again, answer each question in its entirety.

      Hello Mr. Tran! Thanks for the question. I'll tell you what I remember and of course based on my experience. The written part of the Psychological Evaluation is mostly scantron type and is made up of hundreds of questions that are actually simple and all about you (Choose the most appropriate answer, complete the sentence, etc.). There were so many that it took me a couple of hours to finish. I noticed that some of the questions are similar and repeated towards the end but worded differently. Here are some tips: Be honest and constant! Your response should be the same even when the questions are structured differently. They ask you questions like: Do you wash your hands repeatedly throughout the day? Do you see ghosts? Do you hear voices? Are you still paying attention to the questions on this test? I feel bad when I ______ and then you complete the sentence. After a few days, maybe a week or so, I was instructed to return for an interview by a psychologist. That took about 30 minutes and the questions she asked were based on my responses to the written test. They don't really tell you but your response to the written must correlate with your background investigation. The purpose of this portion of the application process is to dig into an applicant's mind and see mental stability and hints of bipolar disorders, obsessive compulsive behavior, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, etc. Good luck Mr. Tran!

But sometimes I think I’m not brave enough like these people and would like to know how. I live in the City of LA and want to join the LAPD. What’s a good college major to stand behind if you want to go federal or just a cop in general?

      Hello Mr. Spartan and thanks for the question Sir. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Technical Management and a Master's Degree in Business Administration. Why? Because after HS, I was advised by friends and family members who are in the LAPD that a business and management education works best in law enforcement because Police Stations are somewhat run like a business entity. I asked why not criminal justice or law? They said all the law that you need to know will be taught in the academy. Also, I noticed that business degrees are very popular among LAPD Officers who have been in the force for a while and are wanting to better themselves. Now this is just my personal experience Mr. Spartan. You should also think beyond the LAPD. You should choose a career that could also help you in case a career Law Enforcement does not work out the way you wanted it to. Good luck!

      Officer 1118 Hey officer , sorry to bother you, but it’s just an idea. You should make a video on the common fears a rookie or police officer thinks about when on the line and how to deal with the psychological factors , fear of death etc. or maybe cover your first months as a rookie and what to expect. Many thanks stay safe 🚔

      Thanks for the question Sir. BA degrees somewhat help during the application process but will help more after training. The higher the educational level, the more pay. The number one reason in getting kicked out of the application process is by submitting false information and/or lying. The more inconsistencies in your responses and paperwork, the less chances of getting in. What you tell them and submit should be the same from beginning to end.

      @@shlummped9682 Any military experience, reserve or active is always a bonus! Reservists, veterans and anyone with a military background is already familiar with the discipline and demands of training.
      The LAPD Cadet Program, makes an individual become more familiar with law enforcement and what it takes to be an officer in the LAPD. in many ways, it definitely helps. However, not a lot of people are aware of this program. Most of my fellow Recruit Officers including myself were never part of this program but we made it just the same.

    Is there some benchmark scores you could give us to reach before we do the PFQ? My running and sprinting is lacking but my push ups and situps are good. Also are there some exercises you could tell us to do before we get into the academy so we are not struggling? How long and tough are the runs in the academy? Would running for long distances at a slow pace be better compared to going to hiking?

    • @LAPDOfficer1118
      @LAPDOfficer1118  4 года назад +1

      Thank you for your question. As long as you score above 50 on the PFQ you're good. I can't give you a good benchmark because the academy will factor in age, height and percentage of body fat into your score. If you're around 18 years of age they will be expecting high marks. Focus on running, push-ups and sit-ups because that's pretty much what the PFQ as well as the bulk of the academy workouts demand. If you are not good at one of the tests, that's fine. Your push-ups and sit-ups will carry your score. The instructors don't expect everyone to excel in every category. If you want to train yourself, try to do as many push-ups and sit-ups as you can in one minute everyday when you get out of bed in the morning. As for running, just time yourself for two miles and try to run with friends whenever possible. The runs in the beginning of the academy vary upon which instructor you get. In my case, we ran laps uphill and downhill in groups of four. Later, we went on about three mile runs in formation. As you progress in the academy you will perform longer runs. During the runs you will also be quizzed on what you have been taught so far. Make sure you're paying attention in class and got the basics down like the LAPD mission statement and the LAPD's core values. I believe that long distance running will serve you better than hiking.

      Officer 1118 perfect answer thank you. Is there any weight lifting in the academy? Or just running, sit ups, pull ups, and push ups? How fast should our mile be before taking the pfq and how tough was the academy physically and mentally?

    • @LAPDOfficer1118
      @LAPDOfficer1118  4 года назад +1

      @@MastaCrackz Hello again Sir. Weight lifting is actually a part of training and the amount of weight lifting exercises depends on your instructors. It varies from one class to another. There is a gym at the Ahmanson Training Center that is available for training for Recruit Officers and active officers alike. However, as in my class, we were banned from using the gym after a couple of weeks into training because a handful of my fellow recruit officers were branded as "too noisy" and lacked respect by not putting the weights back where they're supposed to be. So, try to be respectful, be quiet and put the weights back. As they always say... "when in the gym, suffer in silence." Regarding timed mile runs, 13 minutes per mile is not good... in the beginning, aim for 10 minutes or less per mile and a half (10 minutes/1.5 miles). Don't forget that each is judged individually with consideration to age, weight and body mass.
      How tough is the LAPD Academy physically and mentally? MastaCrackz, you're planning to join of the most elite police organizations in the world. You will be subjected to extreme mental and physical stress during training and what do the instructors say? ... "The academy is Disneyland compared to the streets".

      Hello Miss Tiffany. I went through this process just mid of 2018 so it's fairly fresh Ma'am. What I mention in this informational video is based on my own experience and what is on the LAPD website (Join LAPD) which is the standard or regular way of getting in. I didn't discuss about the expedited process because I never went through it and not everybody gets that opportunity as well. I'm not saying what I went through and discussed in this video is right or wrong, it's just what I experienced, what the LAPD brochures say and what LAPD posted on the website. I am happy that you passed everything last week, it makes you one step closer to your dream! I hope my 2nd and 3rd videos would help you prepare for the academy. Thanks for the comment Miss Tiffany, I really appreciate it Ma'am!
