Hello officer! How often do you do the physical training at the Academy? Do you run and do calesthenics (push-ups, sit-ups) every day? Or just a few times a week? Thanks again for creating this channel. It's been super informative and is a great service to the LAPD to know what to expect and to prepare.
Thank you very much for the kind words Barry, truly appreciated! Let me give you an example of a typical day during training: We get there at around 4-5 AM. We prep our gear, uniforms and study materials. There are remedial classes offered at 5:00 AM for those who want to improve their performance. At around 6 AM if there are no Flag ceremonies, we would be given instructions for the day. It varies a lot after the Drill Instructor gives the morning message but this is usually followed by either PT or class hours. Each class is about 1-2 hours depending on topic and there are about 6-7 different classes per day. After the classes, we get about 30 minutes break of which 10 minutes we use to eat, if we're lucky! The break is followed by tactical instructions like baton strikes, handcuffing, jiu-jitsu, de-escalation tactics, radio broadcasting, etc. After this, you're pretty much done for the day and your DI gives final instructions including what to expect next day or in a few days, how the class performed and what he expects the class to know in the future. The DI then dismisses the class by turning it over to the Class Leader and if there are no scheduled class meetings for the day, everyone is free to go. The schedules vary a lot because of the number of classes, number of staff on board and even the number of teams in a class. Now for your actual question: We run and crisscross around the ARTC neighborhood, it's not easy to say, however if I will estimate it, I'll say a good 1-3 miles. The distance of the run depends on a couple of things, the slowest runner in your class and how much time is dedicated for the run with consideration to what's planned for the rest of the day. I hope the above helps!
@@LAPDOfficer1118 Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I feel I can better prepare thanks to you. But how often is the running? Os it every day, M-F, or a few times a week? Thanks again!
If I remember it correctly we ran about 2-3 times a week depending on what's planned for the day.
Hello! I know this video is pretty old so I’m not sure if you’ll see this, but how do station assignments work? Do you get to choose your preferred divisions, do you get to choose which bureau you get stationed in like valley bureau, or is it just completely random? Thank you
Hello and thank you for your question. Before graduating from the academy, you will be given, sort of, a "wish-list" of up to three division assignments. However, in the end they will be assigning you to a division that badly needs new recruits and when they do, they will actually consider your place of residence. They do not want you to be too far from home yet not too close to your residential address that people will recognize you or you're a familiar figure in the neighborhood. I hope this helps.
@@LAPDOfficer1118 thank you, that really helps! Thanks for your time and service
Hello, what type of boots do you wear at the LAPD academy? do you have link?
Hello and thank you for the question! During my days in the academy, we used Bates Durashock E03140. Here's an eBay link for you just for your reference on the model: www.ebay.com/itm/355867664165?_nkw=bates+durashock+E03140&epid=1300784264&itmmeta=01J7C7T4TBW9RDA2MR51MPE4N3&hash=item52db5d9f25:g:rlAAAOSwBoFmkstM&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA0HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKkGlF5krOwDeLKhLsDC2g3opLs9O0mSUT2yK9yWOFYbHuTd5vXMj8nHN6olVUiOUUsHklCZx0aqjdILReDlCTEjZKV%2FqRYJBE16OIDQJqk%2BPFHvXijTJzDjPLU7plaKG11oVlb7yswxMi0lCPxPI2%2FbqphX3qFWGif%2B2wZ1G7ulWEVmHxWNjl3fysOnhzMk3Tvx%2BI2%2FRqgaO8LlaPu36%2Fb8tAGYnwFZyH2eJyqreYX0CrWoxeQoBBEUzZuKIV0dm1c%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR57N6Ie7ZA&edge=1 Thanks and I hope this helps.
What is the brand of the silver name plate? 6:37
Not sure about the brand but we have them made locally like from GALLS for example. I hope this helps and thank you.
I do taekwondo can this help?
Hello. Any form of martial arts help but do not be surprised if the LAPD teaches you a mellowed-down version. Thanks foe the question!
I’m from Greece and I live in Greece. Can I ever join the lapd?
Thank you for the question Ma'am. You need to be legally in the US to be allowed into the LAPD and if you're not a US Citizen you need to have started the application process.
Does anyone know how many are invited to your badge ceremony and actual graduation?
For Badge Day, they request that you invite a minimal amount of family members so I brought along two. They didn't say the same for Graduation Day and I saw many, many family members come in groups. I myself invited six people.
If I have a non-U.S. certificate, am I still eligible to submit an application?
Yes but you should also be in the process of becoming a US Citizen. That "might" change soon though...
@@LAPDOfficer1118 Thanks you I'm starting to have hope.🥹
What if you are a out of town applicant, what could you do to be prepared if you can’t attend CAP
Thank you Mr. Smith. The CAPs is designed to help you prep for the PFQ. If you can't attend CAPs because you're from out of town, make sure you do these regularly and create your own personal log: The PFQ test is usually push-ups, sit-ups and a 1.5 mile run For the Sit-Ups, a good score would be about 42-46 per minute while a poor score will be 33-37 per minute. Anything that falls in between is fair. For Push-Ups, 37-44 per minute is good, 22-27 is poor. For the 1.5 mile run, 10.34-11.27 minutes is good, 12.53-13.58 is poor and finally, for the 300m sprint, 51-54 seconds is good and poor is a minute or more. GOOD LUCK!
Thankyou for the advice, take my pfq next month
Best of luck!
do you get oc sprayed?
Hello sir, what is the pass rate for probation and what is the reason why people don't become police officers one year after the academy? Is it common for officers to not make it past probation? thank you
Thank you for the question Sir. Let me answer your questions with some numbers. Only a third of applicants will be pass the selection process. Only a third of selected applicants will actually end up in the academy. Only a third of successful academy graduates will still be officers a year after graduating from the academy. These are facts that they tell you while you are in training. This is why I always advise to have a PLAN B. It is a sad truth but not everyone is suited for this job.
Hi. Do you think a trespassing charge that resulted in a fine (I didn't go to court and I was not convicted) will be a DQ? This happened when i was 14 years old. I'm now 24 and graduated college. I was an idiot back then and I trespassed on someone's balcony as a dare lol.
Hello. Thanks for the message. I have seen and heard of worse issues but it wasn't an automatic DQ. If I were you, I would try and remember, BE HONEST. Good Luck!
Thank you 🙏🏽
You are very welcome and good luck!
I am considering joining the cadet program. If I am applying to the actual LAPD later on would my past membership of the cadet program show up?
Hello. Thanks for the question YesNo. The answer is YES. When they conduct your Background Investigation (BI). Not only will your past participation in the LAPD Cadet Program show up... everything about you will show up... school performance, previous employment, even what your neighbors think of you! Good Luck!
Do you recommend any books to study for LAPD?
No need for books Ma'am. But here are some tips: Know the LAPD Mission Statement by heart and be able to recite it while doing push-ups, Know the LAPD Core Values, Memorize LAPD Phonetics (A=Adam, B=Boy, etc.) which are very different from military phonetics and practice your facing movements... if you know all these the first few weeks will be a little easier.
Sounds quiet exhausting... no wonder
I made it to the next class. What’s your some of the best advice you have?
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Here are three of the best advise I give: 1. If they can do it, you can do it! 2. Listen, pay attention, study! 3. Have a back-up plan! Not everyone who passes the academy will be police officers after one year!
Thank you! Absolutely! That’s why I never burned my recent bridges. Is that a common thing?
Hey officer! Thanks for this video! Would you also be able to share the CODES like Burglary, rape, robbery etc etc so we can start learning those as well? Maybe list them underneath this comment?
Im 2 months post poly and my BI still hasnt reached out to me. Just need to clear backgrounds and psych eval
A bit late to the comment section. But what happens if you become sick during academy? Do they allow several days off to feel better?
Most people who go thru the academy does not get sick but every now and then there would be that one person. If I remember it correctly, the most they will give you is one day off. After one day, your continued participation becomes questionable. I hope this helps and thank you for the question!
God willing! I'm in Phase 3!
Congratulations! Good Luck!!!

What are the written tests like throughout the academy?
Hello Nugget. Thanks for the question. Yours is a simple question but there are many factors involved so here is my response: During academy training you will have about 2-3 short quizzes or tests every week but every month or so there will be a big written examination which you really need to study for. They are all written exams but towards the end of training, there would be a lot of scenarios where you exercise and practice the tactics you were taught. Some are simply for training but some are Pass or Fail tests. There are many reasons why a candidate could fail scenario tests, for example, not removing your finger from the trigger after shooting, shooting an innocent civilian, etc. The Ambush Scenario and the Night Time Shotgun Scenario are tests that would really challenge your skills and patience. When you fail a first attempt, they make you sign a piece of paper that says if you fail again, you will be removed from the academy immediately. Luckily, most Recruit Officers quickly learn from their mistakes and are able to recover after the second attempt. They always remind us during scenarios that in the academy, it's pass or fail, but out on the streets, it's life or death! The big exams depend on what you've been studying in the past few weeks. Subjects include illegal substances, citations, domestic violence, illegal firearms, concealed weapons, etc. The questions are often multiple choice. To be physically successful in the academy make sure you don't neglect physical core exercises like running, pushups and situps. To be academically successful in the academy, try to join study groups, use flash cards, take lots of notes and pay attention to detail. I hope this answers your question.
Hello Officer, what month do recruits get issued their gun in the academy?
Hello. Thanks for the question. Pretty early in training, about a month or two into the academy if I recall correctly.
Good for you to make a video to help others out. I JUST retired after 25 yrs w a major city. My two cents , stay out of trouble. Dont hang with people who are trouble makers, and driver resposnibly. There arr many factors and when I went thru it was tough... be realistic, not everyone is cut out to be a cop. Good luck to all. Police work is so different now. My hats off to you all.
Thank you Sir, God Bless!
Just wanted to know if you have to get tased in the academy?
Hello Tyler. The answer is yes and is in fact considered somewhat a "Rite of Passage" into law enforcement by many.
Is there a list available of what we need to purchase for the academy? I’ve heard from candidates they receive that on orientation day
Hello Mr. Steven. Thanks for the question. The answer is that you will be receiving most of your gear and uniform on Orientation Day. Whatever you don't receive you will be asked to secure within the week. Make sure you watch Part 2 and Part 3 of my video series so you get a little heads-up on the stuff that you'll need. Good Luck!!!
Could you do a video on how to properly shine boots and Sam Browne?
For my first day of CAPS, what do I specifically wear?
Hello John. Thanks for the question. See page 11 of this document: assets.website-files.com/63db1d04e804176dcb525fc5/643a384a03d2932a85a0a879_CAP%20Manual.pdf Good Luck!
How is the polygraph part of the hiring process?
Hello Mr. Lopez. Polygraph questions will be based on your psych eval and the questionnaire you filled out upon initial application. They ask questions that disclose your character... repeatedly! They want to see if there are any changes to your responses. NEVER watch a video online on how to cheat the polygraph test. I hope this answers your question, thank you!
hello, so is it possible to go to the LAPD as a german citizen if you own a greencard?
Hello. The answer is yes and the LAPD has very specific rules about this: The City of Los Angeles requires that a Police Officer candidate be a United States citizen, or that a non-citizen be a permanent resident alien who, in accordance with the requirements of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), is eligible and has applied for citizenship. During the selection process, each non-citizen is required to prove that USCIS accepted his/her application for citizenship prior to the date the Police Officer written test was taken. California State law requires that citizenship be granted within three years after the employment application date. For information regarding citizenship requirements, contact the USCIS. I hope this helps and good luck!
Awesome video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you so much sir
do military veterans receive a free suit?
Unfortunately not Sir, I don't believe so.
Hello Sir. there is any chance during the academy I get out for not passing any exams during those 6 months?
Thank you for the question. The answer to your question is YES. Has this happened before? YES. BUT... please know that the Academy will give you multiple chances to prevent this from happening. From group studies to early morning remedial classes, you will get many chances to avoid failing academically. I hope this helps.
I’m taking my multiple choice test in about 3 weeks nervous !
How did u do?
How was it
Kinda sucks you can’t be accepted into the academy over minor mistakes you made when you were younger
Do you guys do hand written memos in the academy
Hello. There are a lot of writings during the entire process of the academy. The training team wants to make sure you are prepared in writing reports that would stand in court. Thank you for the question.
I'm 17 and I aspire to join SMPD or LAPD when I'm old enough. Some days I struggle to get up, but this is pure motivation and it helps so much. Thank you for your work.
It's all about determination and discipline. Two skills that doesn't only help you breeze through the academy, but in daily life as well. Good luck!
class 11-18? I was 11-07
Very informative information! One question. How soon you do you join the academy after passing and getting accepted for academy? Thank you!
Thank you for this excellent question. This depends on two things. When you get your docs and evals completed and how many spots are left in the class that's coming up next. In my case, I was supposed to join the December class but since I got my papers squared away and there are a couple of spots open for November, I got in sooner. From the time you completed everything that is necessary for recruitment, often it's just a matter of weeks before you get assigned to a class and begin training.
@@LAPDOfficer1118 awesome! Final question! Can you have a mustache in the academy? Or completely clean shaven?
@@horrorfreak9653 I can tell you right now that during academy training none of us had beards or mustaches. Hope this helps.
I have orientation day on the 8th, how much should I expect to spend on that day?
Hello Eber, if I were you I would have $1,500 - $2,000 on stand by... don't quote me on that but it's a good number.
Hello Officer, during the academy how many exams is it ? After the academy is it a lot of opportunity for overtime work?
Hello. I remember us having tests regularly, as in almost every week regularly. They test us on what was taught the previous week or the past couple of days. Yes, there's a lot of overtime opportunity. The paperwork alone sometimes pushes you to do an hour or two of overtime work after your watch.
Hello Sir! Thank you for all the info! I am starting academy March 13th finally after 11 months process! For orientation day they mentioned we don’t have to wear full on suit due to the different things we will be trying on. Was this your experience too or did majority had suit on ? Another question is we’re the tests mostly what you learn in class or ? Thank you for your time! Thank you!
Congratulations and welcome to the LAPD family! Suits only on the first day of the academy (Black Line) not on Orientation Day. You will be busy during orientation day picking up your gear and uniform. The family member you will bring will also be busy as they will be informed of the entire process that you will be going through... important dates, healthy meals, uniform preparations, paycheck deductions, etc. it will be a busy day that will start really, really early in the day. You will be tested on what you learned in the classroom, yes. Good Luck!

Please upload again…I miss you’re presence.
Thank you so much for your videos! I am currently in the process and I have a couple of questions. Once I pass everything, does the agency email me my start date? If I cannot make it to that start date, is there a way I can defer and join another class at a later date? I am out of state. I had bought tickets and cruise rooms for my trip in July 2023 but I will be back August 22, 2023, I talked to my mentor and she advised me that there is a start date on August 28.
The good news is that the Department is flexible on dates (BEFORE you start training), there are classes beginning every month and I'm sure they will work with you but you need to communicate this with them ASAP!
@@LAPDOfficer1118 do you know who I would reach out to?
@@aelitanguyen5266 I would try anyone from recruitment (866) 444-LAPD if you do not have a mentor.
Thank you so much sir! A day after I asked that question, a BI reached out and I forgot to disregard the question.. thank you so much for your help. One more question, during the proper spray (OC spray), how does that work? I wear contact lenses and cannot see without them and I know there are obstacle courses I have to go through..

Question! When you said head shaved for interview, do you mean a buzz cut? Or full bald shaved?
Some buzz, some full... thank you for the question... but here's the point... you intend to show them you are ready for what is ahead. I hope this helps.
I was born and raised in L.A. (Hollywood Division). I went the Fire Service route, retiring 12 years ago after serving 32 years. I just wanted to say I have the highest regard for the LAPD. Watching them in-action as a kid and teenager, and later being friends with several (even had a relative who was a D.I. With LAPD, now retired) I can say the LAPD truly is a highly professional organization with good standards and training. This is a tough time to be a cop anywhere, but if you are, or aspiring to be, a member of the LAPD hold your head high, stay safe, and continue to uphold the excellent traditions of professionalism as you “To Protect and to Serve” just like it says on the doors of every black and white. Good video series.
Thank you very much for the kind words Sir! Thank you very much for your service Sir! God Bless!
