- The Dillinger Escape Plan {DEP} is a heavy metal rock band founded in 1996 by Ben Weinman and Chris Pennie. In 1997, the band recorded their first album with Relapse Records. Their second album, Calculating Infinity, received critical acclaim from both underground and mainstream press. The band is best known for the intensity of their performances, which have incorporated light shows, fireworks, fire breathing, and other special effects. The New York Times said about DEP, ?The lyrics are nonstop dystopia. But the words hardly matter. Dillinger Escape Plan is about extreme musical craft: fast tempos and sputtering, rubbery start-and-stop structures.? Their latest album, Ireworks, was released in November.

Charlie Rose is prettymuch the man for having stuff this diverse on his show.
Greatest Band Ever
this band represents exactly what music should be: the display of an artist's creation. note the creation, not regurgitation. in their case, the creation happens to be a chaos that very few others are capable of stirring up and executing so well.
i knew the guitarist was my favorite. what a badass
"The band is best known for the intensity of their performances, which have incorporated light shows, fireworks, fire breathing, and other special effects."
What the fuck? The intensity of their shows is comprised of light shows, fireworks, fire breathing, and other special effects? How about the band going completely fucking nuts. The bands reckless abandon and extreme music is what makes the shows intense. The other shit is consistent with things you'd see at any other concert. ha.
just saw these guys live. Insane! best show ever! Love these guys so much.
Yes they did. Billy Rymer from Kings Park, NY.
I saw them last night and Billy has stepped up to the plate and delivered.
DEP is a must see band. Anyone who is a fan of live music should go to a show.
this alot of things with it !!!! this is more then that .
DEP has always reminded me of a more hardcore version of Mr. Bungle.
thank God there are still real bands out there like the dillinger escape plan.
THIS, IS, SPARTA !!!
great band!! brilliant off time jazz beats and pure unadulterated madness blended together with skull-crushing metal!! truely one of the great bands of this generation.
I get what you're saying, but they are definitely rooted in punk.
think of them as having a framework made of hardcore punk, with everything else about them built around it.
Is it just me, or did I see Greg wearing a mayhem shirt? Neverthless, great interwiew!
anybody know the opening song played?
Where can I see their interview?
No, its their THIRD album, the first is a Self titled and the second is called "Under the Running Board"
Nice
wut song are they playing throughout the vid?
Well that's good to hear dude! All of them are so talented.
It's a shame they haven't come around Northeast Ohio in 2 years now :/
kick ass. I always knew Charlie had good taste
"The Dillinger Escape Plan {DEP} is a heavy metal rock band"
:)
i came to that very same conclusion this week
real talk
unpredictability :)
Here's my awesome Dillinger moment: In the crowd at warped tour with my girlfriend. Dillinger is the only reason we went to that shitty festival. And they play to a pretty empty crowd coz those young kids don't even know the awesomeness that is Dillinger. We're standing in the crowd and Jeff points to me and my girl and says in the mic "I'm coming to you" then about 10 minutes later, he fucking comes marching out of the pit doing a boot stomp and damn near runs me over.scared the shit out of me.
This is why I love DEP. They are absolutely the opposite of the "heavy music" archetype.
anybody know the song at 3:18 ?
Do you see a scarf on that man? NO. DEP are Geniuses. (full stop)
1 Week and an hour from now, DEP will be will be playing in Pumpehuset denmark.. Me be there ;P
Okay, that proved some kind of point. I'll leave you all now. Thanks.
Calculating Infinity is their second album??? What's the first?
its funny how in the live shots its Chris playing drums, yet there interviewing Gil...
Whats the song starting at bowt 3:17?
MarcusAurelius a bit late - Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants, I presume you found that out already though haha
heavy,post-punk,progressive,jazz-core
agreed
lol only noticed that when i read this
Makes sense that Patton made a record with them then, eh?
i usually hate metal, but dillinger escape plan is different . i like em, they're instrumental craft is extremely complex .
@loldongsize John Dillinger had helped conceive a plan for the escape of Pierpont, Clark and six others he had met while previously in prison, most of whom worked in the prison laundry. Dillinger had friends smuggle rifles into their prison cells which they used to escape, killing two guards.
that's right.
Ben Weinman says "you know" a lot. Has anybody else noticed?
gil is pretty fuckin cool im gonna give him a chance
@DillingerCapone Yes.
I think i've watched every DEP clip on youtube..in some cases multiple times. I think i'm developing a problem.
@BattleOfNY They didnt get rid of Gil! He left because he had too many other things going on. I love his work with them, I hope he works with them again. They didnt part on bad terms
One of the sickest shows you will ever see. Great way to spend 20 bucks. I haven't seen them play on those fucking megastages though, thats a waste of my time. To really get DEP, you have to see them in a small venue.
4:39 Gil Sharone
I miss the days when Greg could keep up with his own vocals...
DEP must love playing this song, i personaly never listen to it or others of this kind
He got out of DEP to play for coheed and cambria
@shinfo002 nope, they got a drummer named Billy Rymer now. He's good tho
Who the hell is Gil Charone?
they must crack up at comments like that. . .
really funny voice cracks ben
well, he only did 4 songs with them, and he wasnt their godfather at all. He came like 7 years after they first came out. I love Patton though, more power to you.
Hi
they would go well with your comments.
4:50 fuck yes Gil !
well, I should have said that mr bungle was the godfather. not only mike. But the two bands are great. dillinger into emo? cant believe it, gotta hear it by myself.
@awkwardspeaker
Weak?! he could level buildings with that voice!!
setting fire to sleeping giant
@Scratch47 Totally agree, but I'd almost go as far as to call them punk rock.
Mmmm... I used to like DEP because of their challenging sound, and because of the fact that Mike Patton was the godfather of that band. Ill have to listen to the new album to give an opinion, but I guess that after this change of sound, comparing them to Mr Bungle was a big, big excess.
that forhead... where in the gym... gah guess I have to figure out. Nevertheless it's a great element of visual persuasion. Überinterview
im not a huge gil sharone fan...the drummer i saw them on warped 2010 was fuckin sick tho, hope they have him still
i wouldnt say pennie is better than Sharone ...personally i like pennie more...but shit i admire everyone who can play this on the drums
the guitars kick DEP's ass becuase its not just random noise, and the singer doesnt just scream like an idiot
good taste in dissent, anyway ;-)
first of all, greg doesnt just scream. and second of all, just because ben's guitar parts are more complex than coheed's doesn't mean its just random noise. c&c doesn't express nearly as much emotion as dep. and certainly don't have as much energy. and definitely couldn't deal with the complexity of the mixed time signatures of the dillinger escape plan. they don't deserve chris, but it was his decision to leave. for money or personal reasons, what have you.
cause they didn't get along for a second
I think "math metal" makes it seem uber-creative.
His collar is like a mobius strip
Heavy Metal band?
@buffcode07 If he could level buildings he would have already done it, as he has very little control.
Everyone else seems so precise, except the singer, in my opinion.
Sorry, they don't care about comments like that.
yeah thats what ive just said...but they call it jazzmetal.....some call it mathcore
Nah it's a Testament - T-shirt:)
I respect them, they have done well, Calculating Infinity was groundbreaking - I just don't think this new direction is going to do them any good. It's as if you put all your hopes on a band that comes shining through the fog of truly terrible bands, and then they just intentionally stall and do what everyone else is doing. Candiria really stank on their last album, and one band I really had high hopes for, to continue pushing the boundaries was DEP. Surely people can see the difference?
they didn't pick very good music clips to demonstrate dillingers insanity.
i dont understand that but yeah thats your opinion ...I dont think that they try to do what everybody does, theyre just doin whatever the fuck they want...anyway CI was very good but i think Puciato is way more versatile then Minakakis ever was ..
@TheMawBlasphemy yeah haha i wonder if he did that on purpose?
...at drums ofcourse
you sound like Skwisgaar from Metalocalypse.......
Ba-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!.........
sharone pretty sounds like a punk nerd. lovely.
...didn't they get a new drummer?
oh gil....
Ben looks really ill these days, anyone else think so? Like he's lost a lot of weight.
@Spacecowboyy
Anarchy is not chaos.
@stratocaster1986able Setting fire to Sleeping Giants :D
no because Coheed and Cambria could kick DEPs ass
Gil Sharone is tank haha
Gil Sharone>Chris Pennie>Me
ive come in late here harry, but gotta agree with you. dont know who youre writing off here but if he doesnt understand that dep is FREAKING SICK, then, well, what a loser.. these guys are the most passionate, technically brilliant, creative and brutal band around. ummm..... cosmo metal core...
thx i already took a valium at breakfast...shit yeah i label musicians....so please stop commenting me now..
you must be a noob so i will not tear you a new one over this, they play in constantly changing time signatures,i.e. the guitars are doing rhythym and melody parts, the bass can be playing a counter part in a different time sig. and the drums are shifting every few seconds on the heavier songs,it's jazz,go listen to Frank Zappa for a while and it'll make sense, these guys are jazz on steroids
@xBillyTheKidx
No shit, right!? (not being sarcastic)
What's up with these fucking PETA ads with them. Goddamnit...
"You know..."
lol...in what way?.. i think greg could take claudio down pretty easily
