    Safety is a priority, because, you have been doing engine, lawnmower, truck, and car repair long enough to know what you can get away with.,of course, you wouldn't do something obviously nuts.
    My grandpa had a grinder on a small table upstairs in his garage. It was the belt driven kind. He passed away, and about 2 or three years later, I started cleaning up.
    There was an old 5 gallon tin container under the grinder. I used that thing for 20 plus years.
    THE CONTAINER HAD RUSTED, IT WAS OPEN ON THE SIDE, AND HAD 5 STICKS OF DYNAMITE IN IT!!
    So, never say you are unsafe.

      @@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 I remember, probably about 1972 or so, you could buy dynamite at the hardware store. He used it to blow stumps out of the ground. I was told that you need a blasting cap for it to go off. I think granddaddy simply forgot it.

      Yeah that's unsafe. Sparks flying right near some old 70s dynamite. Probably more dangerous because it's almost 40 years old!

    • @michaelcook768
      @michaelcook768 5 лет назад

      @@wildman510 I took it to a friend who hat a speed shop downtown. It had nitro seeping out of the sticks. I think they were bought in the 1960s. My friend took it into a rock quarry he owned...used the area for target practice. He tried everything to get the dynamite to go off...a total dud. He put some brush around, lit on the side. And moved up the entrance road going down into the quarry. Nothing. It had destabilized to the point UT was harmless. It did have a moldy look to it. Oh well.

    Nice score! "Signature" was the house brand for long defunct department store chain Montgomery Ward. MTD used to build mowers for them back when they did exist.

    I have the same thing. It was gifted to me in 2014 after the original owner had no use for it anymore. Maybe a smaller mowing deck and less hoodvents. It's got the same engine too. We took the deck off though because we already have a tractor that we use for mowing. It's a great tractor to ride around and do some yard work, even if it burns through gas kind of quickly :) Also I know you were wondering when it was built. Mine was from the 90's, so I'd assume yours is from the 90's too.

    Great work on that riding mower, those fuel shutoff solenoids on the carb can get gummed up pretty easily and prevent them from working. What that valve is actually for is anti-backfire for when you turn the key off so it doesn't pop or backfire, you can eliminate that altogether by getting a bolt that's the same length of threads to put in there. Keep up the good work!

  • @gordonwilloughby8793
    @gordonwilloughby8793 5 лет назад +1

    My guess on the solenoid is either the battery went down a bit and running the engine charged it enough so it started or a sticking safety switch. when you started it it the last couple of times it sounded like the battery was low because it was having a slight problem turning past compression.

    I boughtt a 21 horse MTD commercial 3 blade 46 inch deck with grass catcher for 200 bucks! The automatic transmission is awesome ! They said the battery was dead, I removed the battery and trickle charged it cleaned the terminals and it worked like a charm! I rebuilt the carb this spring and did a tuneup! Im doing commercial mowing for a condo association, about 5 acres! Plus my own and a couple of neighbors!

    The “transmatic” sticker is talking about the variable drive pulley system, the belt glides in between two plates one that moves to make the pulley bigger or smaller that’s why it doesn’t launch you off. Edit: it was a decent design. And the only downfall is there are actually 2 shorter drive belts rather then just one long belt

    I bought one from Wards in 1989 and it’s still going. Parts were easily available until the “throw away” mentality of 2000. I had another ‘75 MTD from Western Auto that lasted 20 years. Bought a Poulan 15 /38, in 2004, it was a piece of junk from the getgo, worst mower ever made. Briggs engine has the crappy Nikki carburetor. Finally was able to buy a good John Deere 4 years ago. You may have trouble finding exact fit blade, transaxle and vari-speed belts for it. The cross section of the belts are an odd size.

    ariens is made by ayp or american yard products. they made craftsman tractors. husqvarna now owns ayp. the transmatic is because the transmission is just a forward and reverse. the speed adjustment is made by a double variable speed pulley underneath. transmatic is because you can shift the speed lever forward or faster without pressing the clutch. these are solid built machines. at least back then. the mtd's made now are crap. although everything made today is

    • @michaelcook768
      @michaelcook768 5 лет назад

      Yea, MTD ruins everything it touches. Roper made Sears in the late 60s(they bought David Bradley), into I guess the late 70s into the 1980s. Roper was bought out by AYP..American Yard Products...which was owned by Electrolux..but is owned by Husqvarna for at least 10-15 years.
      The Roper machines were blue/white, red/white, and butterscotch/cream white. Those tractors were wonderful...tugh machines. Think about this..the David Bradley garden tractor has been around, in great numbers, since the 1940s to 1967. Many are still running...newer engines, but the rest of it will easily last 100 years.

    • @corysgardentractors7084

      @@michaelcook768i have to admit though... AYP Craftsman Tractors were pretty solid. i got a 1999 Craftsman GT. Looks like a GT5000 but green. It has mowed 3 acres of grass every year since new. and i have never had any major issues. biggest thing was the deck rusted out. but i was able to buy a new shell. the kohler 20 vtwin has to have at least 5000 hours. and it runs great still. i just picked up a sears custom 6. man it is all cast iron. wish equipment was still made like that. instead JD Tractors have plastic transaxles.

    Oh and if you find that this machine ever were to flood itself the antibackfire solenoid is not the cause that solenoid on carb bowl is only there to stop fuel flow when you turn the key off to prevent backfire if you ever have carb flooding issues its pretty much a bad needle and seat problem in the carb. I see at the end you mentioned maybe the wiring got knocked loose on the ride home if you havent yet you ought to when you get time take the plug off the back of the ignition switch and clean the switch and plug up if they are dirty just to make sure its making good contact thats probably what was causing in part of the video when it wouldnt even turn over from the key.

      @@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 your welcome and something to think about is if someone tries to argue the solenoid is what causes them to flood and due note by flooding I am talking about when your crankcase gets filled with gas tell someone to explain why if you go back on these briggs or anyone small engine before a fuel shutoff solenoid what caused them to flood thier crankcase. You can cut the tip end of the solenoid off and run without it worst risk in my opinion you run into doing is getting a backfire which some still do that even with a working solenoid I run a kohler command vtwin for about 3 years with the plunger part of the fuel solenoid cut off never had any issues and amazingly it very seldom ever backfired on me.
