      Well said brother. For people of all kinds. The Truth is the truth. Both in Lyrics and in Music. I saw the great man and his band just once, special guest at Womad 1985, one of the early ones. Me and one or two mates were in Heaven. That band was so hot. GSH was so chilled. He had everybody absolutely letting go, digging the music, even the rain stopped on Canvey/Mersea Island's, just so the great man could direct us, towards a greater goal.
      Ranks as one of the best evenings in my life. Whether he is resting up or working in some other realm I know not. I do know he planted seeds. I watched them grow. Thanks GSH. Mad props to you. 🤩😎🤗

Guys fatter than me cramming there bodies into their fave T-Shirt. I saw a few other people walk buy looking baffled. Just going to the corner shop I think. If the gig starts when they're in they're they might never get home.

    This exceptionally beautiful person seems to prove, through the life he had, the sufferings he endured, the mystical side of his immense poetry, his over-powerful political awareness, his voice sending shivers to everyone with some kind of Heart & Soul, GSH seems to prove that however gifted you are, it doesn''t mean you gonna have a happy life. Happiness will not be televised either, cos it doesn't exist, and that's precisely because we love this Man so much, forever. Keep on fighting, bro'.

    I was so sad when I found out (I started listening his music after he died, I was born in 96) that he was hooked on heroin and contracted AIDS. Heroin, crack and AIDS are still a huge problem in the African-American community to this day (I say this as a white man, from Europe) and it pains me to know that so many great black artists and humans died from their consequences. But this still resonates today. Looking at the state of the media today, the revolution may never be televised, but Gil Scott Heron at least warned us about that ahead of everyone else. Rest in peace, legend.

We're talking centuries of struggle and oppression, not some immigrants from Ireland here. That's some die-hard stuff to go through. Dehumanized, sub-humanized then second class citizens to equal rights. Never forget, it wasn't given to them, they had to fight for it.

    This is very true. And the understanding is constantly changing and deepening if you're open to the experience. It's one thing for me to be a white kid raised in a white neighborhood by great parents who taught me right from wrong, but who themselves did not have the shift to comprehend the depth and complexity of the issue beyond "Don't be prejudiced". It's another thing to get to the very end of bamboozled and start crying. It's one thing to like a Malcolm X speech and to read the autobiography of Malcolm X. His closing statements about where the ones is something that I've shifted from listening to to actually understanding and identifying with. Which might be weird for many black people but I think it's as valid as any black person today who of course is looking backwards at the pass and themselves having to identify with a. In time period that they did not exist in. Onward and upward. Keep your eyes on the prize and peace.

      I’m a 19 yr old white man in a similar situation. I understand that white liberals have largely overshadowed white socialists, making it hard for black people to trust white people who claim to be on their side, especially in my generation.
      White liberals lack class consciousness and, therefore, fail to see the black liberation struggle as their own struggle. This is what leads to the “white savior” whose only incentive for participating in the revolution is projecting a virtuous self-image for approval.
      I’ve become increasingly more confident in expressing my radical views around black people, and I found them to be a lot more welcoming than I initially anticipated. When you prove that you are quite knowledgeable on the subject and passionate enough to study it on your own, you clearly set yourself apart from the white liberals who just want pictures holding signs for their instagram.
      It’s a problem that isn’t talked about enough though. There are probably MILLIONS of white Americans who shied away from a book, article, or documentary that would’ve changed their entire perception on our society simply because it wasn’t “meant” for them.

    • @exzisd
      @exzisd 5 лет назад

      I really just think Etika is a victim of his own success. He went from a normal dude with a big personality and became a huge success on RUclips quickly garnering a huge fanbase all the while dealing with scars from his past like his brother dying and God knows whatever else may or may not have happened in his past. Power and money can corrupt good well intentioned people. I believe personally he had a mental breakdown in the form of a manic episode. The line between who Etika was on stream or video vs who he really is underneath the surface may have became blurred. He worked so hard but lost a lot of people along the way and that has to be traumatic. Really I don't think there's any grand conspiracy behind it. I think it is just a manic episode fueled by a desire for both attention from him fans and maybe a subconscious cry for help. I think he needs people closest to him to help him and love him and to take some time away from the internet to get real help or sort out his thoughts. I wish the best for the guy. Really has a great way of speaking and inspiring others and so much charisma it's infectious. He also recently bought his own house. Real estate in Brooklyn is not cheap and that is a big accomplishment. I think we could speculate all day but I'm just going with Occam's Razor on this one. The simplest solution is usually the correct one. I could be wrong but it just seems like symptoms of unaddressed mental illness. I pray he gets better.

    " Never underestimate the power of influence art can have. It simply motivates people..."
    But you should keep in mind or acknowledge that the influence of conscious music can be a mixed bag. Because different people listening to the music can get something different from it. Many people may or may not agree with every conscious artist's viewpoint. I don't agree with those conscious rappers who reflect a Marxist viewpoint.

    Well one problem I see with political/conscious rap music is that it's appeal can be limited because the messages many of these artist come with may not appeal to everyone. Political artist are coming with certain views on race,economics,history and gender that many consumers may or may not agree with. I prefer undergound artist who aren't overly political myself.

    Ain't no "revolution" coming through music anyway. People put too much dependence on music to change things. Want to see Black people lives improve? Then more Blacks need to start businesses,spend more of their dollars with those businesses,utilized Black owned banks more,learn to invest money,give more money to the UNCF. This is what Blacks need more of and not more conscious music necessarily. What can more conscious music do for unemployed Black men?

  • @digimaton

    @AshleyDoubtsYou so what about all the black jazz artists who were treated like superstars in France while in America they were beaten, abused, and segregated? Apartheid was still alive and well in the Southern US states until the 1970s (and arguably it still exists in certain rural areas). The proclamation "in fact Europe is more racist than America could ever be" an inaccurate sweeping statement, especially considering the racial diversity that exists there, racists are a tiny minority.

    Then more of those conscious rappers need to step up on the business end and start their own lables. Much of the gangsta rap was put out by artist who owned their own lables or belonged to independent lables that catered to that style of music(Ruthless,No Limit,Sick Wit It,Suave House etc).

    Maybe like in the end of the TV series "The Prisoner" when a revolution happens when number 2 announces that number 6 is the 1, it is cool, all of the sudden after he announces that 6 is the 1 the entire village turns around and stairs right at the one because they know he's they're savior, and it is a revolution because it meant they finally were free of oppression.

    @mrnipmip Oh, I noticed how he hides his tooth like that because I do the same thing. It gives him a little character and style. He has very wise eyes. But it doesn't do that for me. I want to see the 60's version of The Prisoner.

    This guy hides his broken tooth well. Has anyone seen the last Ep. Of The Prisoner...When the whole Village turns around when they find out number 6 is really the one to free them from the oppressive # 2? That is like a secret untelevised revolution .

    West Indian and African immigrants are well known for starting businesses through the use of pooled savings called susu loans. More Black-Americans should consider this approach.

    I think what he meant by that was that Blacks were the only group in America thus far (besides LGBT, but I don't think they were prominent at the time) who had to march, protest, and fight in the court to overcome disfranchisement in the U.S. With a literal interpretation of his words, you would be absolutely right. KKK did do all those things, but they were never deprived of any basic rights; they were on top from the get-go.

    @phadedlife LOL!!! I don't know what comes next but I don't think it is oblivion. I just don't, and that is based on years of reflection. Still, if the pure quiet of resting in the ground is all we can hope for it is probably a little better than what we have to put up with above it. I just can't believe the shit that goes on out here. You couldn't dream up stuff this screwy if you were trying to write a bad movie.

    @Snowman374th What do you mean by a real African American? Americans are all the people who inhabit the Americas, that's from the top of Canada to the bottom of Argentina including the Caribbean. Just because the United States co-opted the word American, to mean them, doesn't make it correct. Would Gil Scott Heron be American enough? His father is Jamaican. By the way, Obama's mum is American.

    @clatn75 If you havent ever noticed there are ALOT of positive black rappers. Its just your mainstream media does not idolize or promote positive people. The ones that break through into the industry frequently sell em selves out, or "sell their souls". Becoming puppets for the people behind the limelight selling the idea that money cash hoes is good for reasons you have to research to understand.

  • @sweeneykovar
    @sweeneykovar 13 лет назад

    @clatn75 the same reason young white, brown, red and yellow kids sing about that same shit. its a bit naive to think all black people are born with, or given access to by their personal context, intimate knowledge about people like Gil Scott. instead of speculating what an "insult" it is for them to be speaking about their own hopes and dreams, however misguided and destructive, how about you engage just ONE of the kids you are referring to in your community & have a convo about Gil Scott Heron

    @danathor99 right, only a handful of us are innovative and are able to see things for what they are. most of us just go along with what the next thing is instead becoming our own. alot of people in our generation wanna be rebels, they swear they're badass and arent followers of society. yet when the next hottest thing comes out they are right along with it just like everyone else. they swear they know everything but really dont know shit. our generation needs more leaders and strong figures.

  • @RISQUE1963

    @clatn75 One of the problems is that even if a rapper or hip hop group wants to put out something that has a message or is political, the labels won't sign them and radio stations won't play it. It's like there's a mandate from the corporate and media worlds to only promote only negative, self-degrading hip hop. They don't want music from groups like A Tribe Call Quest, Brand Nubian, Public Ememy, Grandmaster Flash etc to ever become popular again. Then Gil's Revolution would surely begin.

    @clatn75 how does your comment have thumbs up? "young black guys/rappers sing or care about making money and hanging around with beautiful girls"? you are basically saying that young rappers are the face of black people and apparently you need to point them out as if black guys only rap. Um excuse me but black peoples talents go further than rapping. dont sit there and act like you are part of the solution when you obviously just group young black men into a single category. dont comment nextime

    they weren't involved in the same movement as Gil, sadly. Gil was talking about the advancement of the black community as a whole, these new guys have experience the failure of that movement sadly, and have to deal with the fact that escaping the poverty line is an individual thing for them. Money and bitches are important because they are what people the other side of the tracks measure their life by. people like Saul Williams and KRSone still carry on Gil's message though, don't fret

    @clatn75 Hey. Actually it's about you and it's about everyone. I understand why you ask that question. Although the answer is a lot deeper than that, I can say that it's an observation that the late Gil Scott-Heron said precisely. It begins in the mind. If you feel like you have no shot, you will act like you have no shot. Hence the low self-esteem. I grew up in the hood but i never brought the hood with me. I've done a lot of traveling too. So it's really what you want out of life.

    @GuitarMirth...you guys are the First Nation, which goes way beyond just being American. And yes, your people were also truely screwed over in the process of greed and power. We haven't forgotten and I'm sure Gil didnt forget either. Would have loved to hear his thoughts on the treatment of Native peoples in this country.

    @cwize Yes they did, They funded an organisation with Portuguese merchants who ferried them via slaver ships to the American mainland, if your gonna discredit what i'm trying to say, base it on some historical fact please... I also love how you say Africans set themselves up for slavery, they were convinced by the slavers that they were heading to a new promised land, soon as they got on the ship they were bound and locked up... Like i said get some historical accuracy

  • @cwize
    @cwize 13 лет назад

    @danathor99 The Americans certainly did NOT set up/fund Slave trading. The Africans did that themselves in agreement with many other nations, England included. Africans STILL engage in the slave trade. At least England, America, and other Western civilizations abolished slavery. Playing the slavery card is so tired. If you really hate it, go to Africa and advocate for its abolition.

    @roywarning You make an important point. Yes, absolutely, it's very important to note that Black people didn't do it all on their own. But I don't think it's right to say they "won't do a damn thing"/ wouldn't have done/ couldn't have.. They would have done things, but it wouldn't have succeeded until they got Whites to listen with open hearts. Until then, it would have been like Palestine. So I agree with you, we're all in this together. Compassion is substance.

    @AshleyDoubtsYou And yet Europe never had segregation. Europe never had the colour bar. Europe never had black people sitting at the back of the bus.
    But, you know, even if hypothetically Europe had done all of these things, how exactly would it alter what the USA had done? Do you really believe that a vile history of racism and slavery can be dismissed by saying "Yeah but someone else did the same thing"?
    Shameful.

    @vanderrhuc Britain's still pretty racist, outside of the big multicultural cities like london you find alot of intolerance, BNP and the like. The only difference is in England the main social divisions are that of class with racial divisions operating more in the background, in America this is pretty much reversed. You can't really paint the Uk as a racially tolerant Utopia when the current government is targeting the public services that benefit the poorer minorities with austere cuts.

  • @Oloo
    @Oloo 13 лет назад

    @vanderrhuc it's good to hear that england is so tolerant, however how does that help anything? everyone should move from america to england? I see people complain about racism, but no one is trying to spread the word about open-mindedness, they just pick an icon and let him do it. If anything is to be done, it must be done ourselves. Although it is nice to hear that england has progressed so far, still too expensive lol
    TL;DR: yeah america sucks, we know, thanks for the reminder.
