      @@billduffe4472 20 pounds my ass. The weight cutting stories are just more myths that add to his mystique.
      Why did he never weigh more than 170 for any non title bout in his entire career? Why would he drain himself for fights he didn’t need to make weight for? Here’s the answer: he didn’t. He probably never weighed much more than that 170 in the ring.

      @@billduffe4472 Yes, this is what I have always thought. I bet Gerald was a light heavyweight in those fights, definitely the second one. On the other hand, I've heard Jackson say he had to keep eating just to stay at middleweight and towards the end of his career actually went back down in weight. Never understood how fighters could make the weight, then add 10 or 20 pounds overnight. I mean they are already supposed to be in shape to begin with and train daily, so I never understood it.

    Having been there myself, you can appear lucid and have your wits about you immediately after a stoppage, but that is only because the intense pressure of having someone beating down on you has been halted. After taking a good shot or shots your reaction time is not the same and you can't see the punches coming and you know you are in trouble when don't feel them. Look at Jackson he was all of the above. Big respect to both fighters but that stoppage had to happen when it did.

    • @marknorris1381
      @marknorris1381 Месяц назад

      A myth. This win did not put McCallum on the map, it was his win over Donald Curry that did. Jackson was not a name at this point in time. By the time of his win over Curry in 1987 the big fights between the four had been pretty well done and dusted, Hagler was finished, Leonard only fighting occasionally. The only one of the four who genuinely dodged McCallum was Duran, who took the fight with Hearns instead of defending against McCallum. Mike complains about being avoided but he really only has himself to blame. Had he turned pro after the Montreal Olympics instead of 1981 he would have had the chance of being in there with them. You want to check McCallum's fight record as well and have a look at all the title opportunities he got, for someone that 'everybody' dodged.

    • @ComaToast1
      @ComaToast1 Месяц назад

      Mike Tyson said something along the lines of this as-well no one really was trying to offer McCallum out

    • @marknorris1381
      @marknorris1381 Месяц назад

      @ComaToast1 I disagree. Mike got multiple fights as challenger for world titles in 3 divisions for someone who 'everybody' supposedly dodged. His issue in more recent times is he didn't get a big payday fight against one of the four which he's recently been vocal about. He never campaigned in Hagler's division while Hagler was still in the sport to get himself into position as the mandatory, he moved up once Hagler was done and retired but strangely Mike has accused Hagler of dodging him? Also noting Hagler's no longer around to defend himself either. A good reference for the facts is Mike Culbert who fought Roberto Duran and trained with Hagler and his people for years. He says 'fab four dodged McCallum' is a fairytale concocted by McCallum, he says McCallum's name never came up at the Petrnelli's gym before Hagler retired, was never on the radar. Just a myth.

And he was also given multiple world title opportunities during his career, for someone who was supposedly avoided like the plague. On paper McCallum was vulnerable to a guy like Jackson. He was not the type of fighter who can just stay away and box he liked to stay inside and mix it up so he was going to get hit especially with right hands. Also a guy who throws a lot to the body is opening up his head to get hit.
