Glass Fountains and Totems

  • My glass totem designs, garden glass sculptures and fountains have been very popular with Pinterest and on my blog, so I thought it was time to video the process of building a solar fountain and making some repairs to broken pieces. I think I will make a few more videos to help with the "how to" design and assembly process. It seems my crowded workbench makes for a "busy" setting and background. Ah, well. Enjoy the video and I hope you get some inspiration to try it for yourself.

As I try building a few new pieces I will be sure to try another video or two to share some design ideas. I also have a few more repairs to make that might mean some reconfigured pieces. It keeps me busy and I am glad that folks enjoy the videos.

I'm glad I happened to see your channel - and you have a new subscriber. I use a lot of glass items outdoors to create solar lanterns, even if it's just to use something upside down over a solar light. As a bonus it protects the solar panels.

Very good video. Very clear instructions ❤ finding centre is difficult. I would enjoy seeing your garden.I enjoy making birdbath’s. About 3 years ago it was great, lots of glass available but now not so much. Sometimes I would drill a hole for solar lights and silicone the hole closed. I sold a few for fun. I also made 2-3 tier fountains with punch bowls for the base. I like how you put the blue lid inside. Thanks for sharing your video ❤

I have a couple of punchbowls that I want to make the next fountains from, but I am searching out some sturdy bases. As soon as I find those I will try a few more videos. There are some more repairs I need to make, so that may be another opportunity to share some design ideas. Keeps me busy, along with my bread, photography, RV travel and blogging about it all. I think maybe I need to clean up my workbench a bit, since it looks pretty busy and crowded in the video.

Lucky not to have that problem so far, but it would likely mean separating pieces at the silicone seal.

I had so many boxes of all kinds of glassware. Came from my uncle and my grandma when they had passed away. I just donated after hanging onto them due to a move. It would be nice to have a space to play around and make artsy stuff like that.

Your fountain is gorgeous. The Goodwill near me has a lot of glassware, but hokey smoke Bullwinkle they are a bit pricey for me. There are other resale shops in the area so I will be checking them out in order to make something similar for my porch. This was a very informative video.

Very cool! (literally) 😊 Thank you for your videos! I've been collecting different pieces of glass for a few yrs now but haven't had the time to make anything. Now is the time. I love how you used the fairy lights. I have extra pkgs of them from the holidays. I'm not finding the interesting pieces of glass or dishes as much at our second hand stores. I think they get bought fast since a lot of people now make the garden art to sell. Hobby Lobby has some nice and different pieces of glass ware, though its more expensive. We live in the southwest, and have been in a horrible drought for the last several yrs. We have a well on our property, so water is precious. I never thought about it (running the water) before we moved here, and we were on city water. We're not planting many flowers. In fact we're going to re landscape with drought resistant plants and trees, with more hardscape. So, my glass garden art and flowers will be in the raised flower beds, my hummingbird and bird baths on both patios, as well as some recycled glass feeders for the birds. It makes me feel good to recycle. Every bit helps. I'm going to see how to make the dandelion flowers out of plastic bottles next.
If it weren't for great people such as yourself for making videos, none of us would learn. I'm a visual learner. Thank you again, Doug! Blessings ~ 🌷

I agree about the "availability" lately, but of course that depends on people actually donating their unwanted glass. Some of the bowls and glasses I find have small chips in the rim, which would not make them suitable for use anyway, hence the donations. I also think thrifting and upcycling is much more popular at the moment. Probably my fault for posting these how-to videos! What I really miss are small saucer plates and glass candle holders.

It took me a while to figure how to use the large glass base in a sculpture until I hit on the idea of a fountain. The downside is that it needs cleaning and filling frequently during the summer, but that is simple enough.

  • @lisaevans8403

Why silicone it all down bc you cannot break it down to clean for next yr and the bell should have a few lights on it.

I don't want to leave it to chance that the bowls won't fall off. Between the squirrels that come to drink and our dog, grandsons and such, I want to be sure everything is sturdy. And I also don't want to have moisture inside the large vase bases. Good thoughts, though. Maybe that will work out fine for you.

I haven't had any problems with it here in the South for several years. The pieces I would expect to separate would be some of the larger hanging ones, yet I have only had one where the hook separated from the base. Other pieces that came apart were due to a paint layer between the glass and silicone that peeled off. So far so good.

  • @claudiamcnabb7500

Would a heat gun help to loosen the silicone when doing replacement work or would it be too messy?

    • @adventureswithdougandjackie
      @adventureswithdougandjackie  4 месяца назад +1

I haven't tried that. The silicone might soften a bit. One reason I don't use epoxy or other permanent glues is that I do have to repair and replace some pieces and silicone works to eventually separate and start over.
