- It's been less than 13 weeks since Ex-SR Rebuilt 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34053 "Sir Keith Park" entered Swanage Railway's Herston Works. At the time, the Bulleid pacific comprised of little more than an overhauled boiler resting on a partially stripped chassis, and a kit of unrefurbished parts resembling an Airfix kit. Following a whirlwind of work by both the Swanage Railway and 34053's owners, Southern Locomotives Ltd, the Bulleid pacific has emerged as a near-complete and steamable locomotive.
34053 was withdrawn from service in May 2022 following the expirey of its boiler ticket. This overhaul has seen the locomotive receive an overhauled boiler from 34010 "Sidmouth", another pacific from the SLL stables, with 34010 taking on 34053's old boiler for eventual overhaul and use. 34053 entered Herston Works in late February 2024, shortly after the overhauled boiler had been lowered onto the partially overhauled chassis.
The timescale of 34053's completion is owed in whole to the gargantuan effort displayed by the workforce involved; some of those involved having worked 12 hour days, across 6 day weeks. In this day and age, where money, means and manpower are not abundant, the achievements of both Southern Locomotives Ltd and the Swanage Railway cannot be overstated. Once out of Herston, 34053 would be taken to Norden for offloading onto the Purbeck branch line. Provided the subsequent steam tests and running in trials are successful, 34053 is due to feature at the 'Strictly Bulleid II' Gala on the Swanage Railway.
It's also worth noting that on the same day as 34053 left Herston Works, 34059 "Sir Archibald Sinclair" emerged from the paint shop at Horsted Keynes on the Bluebell Railway. It's thought to be the first time in preservation that two Bulleid pacifics have been outshopped on the same day; and both being examples of Rebuilt 'Battle of Britain' pacifics.

To think that this project involving such a huge amount of work, was completed in this time frame to such a high standard is just amazing and a true credit to all those highly skilled people who were involved. Superb 👍
I really think the Bulleid Pacifics are becoming my favourite class of Express locomotives, they continue to shine and reign supreme in the Preservation era of Steam.
An unbelievable achievement in such a tight timespan. Credit due to all involved. Look forward to see her at the Bulleid Weekend ! Thanks for sharing, Matt.
Glad you enjoyed it, Nigel!
Well done everyone. A fantastic effort by you - and the chaps at Bluebell too of course. True English grit!
GREAT WORK and a high 5 to all who took part .
A magnificent sight - guaranteed to warm the hearts of all steam fans! Carried in triumph by another form
of engineering genius.
Excellent work by all concerned. It seems like only yesterday that my hubby and I were riding behind it on the Spa Valley Railway. Amazing job in an amazingly short time.
Brilliant job. Looks fantastic. Thanks everybody and of course you for filming and keeping us up to date. All the best Mick.
Fantastic locomotive, enormous credit to everyone involved
Another beauty about to return to steam! 🎉
Stunning workmanship on an engine named for a truly great man.
A "truly great man" indeed.
The workmanship is even better in person - the camera doesn't do it justice
Brilliant video that locomotive looks amazing I just love the look and the sound of them keep up with your brilliant work and videos Bernard
Brilliant - you must be very proud of doing so much so quickly. Good luck with the steaming trials.
Another excellent job from the boys at the works👍 Just within the loading guage coming out of the workshop!! Thanks Matt, superb detail work as ever.
The standard of work that they adhere to, and the timescales, are constatntly as impressive as the resulting locos that they produce.
Glad you enjoyed it, Bob!
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel That was a real team effort, took me some time to realise it was just a few weeks ago she went in, especially after seeing her in Alresford siding, incredible.
I think you might be thinking of 34058 "Sir Fredrick Pile", which used to be at Alresford. Currently at Sellinge in the early throws of its restoration.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel There's a lot of 'em about, I can't keep up😄😄😄
Fantastic. Thank you. 👍🏻🏴✌️
Cheers
Very interesting. I never saw an fa category when I was at Preston loco depot. The super D' s there were all 7F and the class fives 5 MT. The 7F super D's could pull and stop a 40 wagon loose fitted, loaded coal train.
Can't wait to see it back on the spa valley!!
Amazing work...what a beauty!
The camera doesn't do it justice. The team behind it really have done a fantastic job.
The rebuilt Bulleids are handsome locos similar to standards. They are much better looking than the ugly unrebuIlt locos. Don't forget that they survived into preservation because they went to Barry scrap yard. That is why there are a lot of them. Nice to see 34053 being restored to running condition
The Rebuilt locos are handsome, but it's all subject to individual preferences. I much prefer them as they were built.
Yes, thanks for the interesting video of Sir Keith Park. Actually, I still enjoy seeing any steam loco and I still drive two on heritage lines in Northern New Zealand. Keep up the good work.
Glad you enjoyed it
Well done,beautiful job.
Hopefully this majestic locomotive will be ready for testing at swanage railway
Good video of a stunning engine ,total credit to the gang who did this
Thank you
Speaking to a few of the team behind it, there was definitely a sense of relief going around.
Excellent Matt 😎
Cheers
Good to see a BIGGLESWADE COMPANY moving it. Nice loco even if we are LNER, all steam is special.
An now, it’s ready!
Great video :)
Cheers
Can't wait to see her back at spa. Well done to all that done the work.🎉
By the way, what does 7p 5fa mean? In BR days they were designated 7p denoting passenger power classification
It's the full power classification from BR days.
7 Passenger
5 Freight
A suffix, denotes a loco with superior braking power, which can stop a train heavier than it can start.
It was present on the cabsides during its service life, as other examples of the class.

I thought Sir Keith Park was what Taw Valley was renamed as a little while back? Or was that Lord Dowding? Or was that Braunton? I get confused 😶
Braunton was renamed to Lord Dowding. Taw Valley was renamed Elizabeth II and later this year Sir Keith Park will be temporarily named after one of the Polish air Squadrons (303 Squadron I think).
How did they do it so quick
A lot of hard graft, and selflessness in giving up the time to ensure it would be completed.
Some of the people involved pulled 12 hour days regularly, while working 6 days per week.
What tender is it going to use?
New Build Tender No002, same one it was paired with during its previous ticket.
Where did it go?
Transfer from the works to Norden for offloading onto SR metals.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel thank you ☺️. Btw great video once again. Never let down :)
@@Eurospotter58 Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
So where is she of to then ?
Norden on the SR, as listed in the description
Typical highly professional job by SLL.
SLL and some SR staff. A true credit to all involved.
As a train spotter in the 1950's I thought that the unrebuIlt Bulleids along with his 0 6 0 's were really ugly, even uglier than the austerities.
Each to their own
Personally I'd like him to stay on the Swanage, I know they have a partnership with spa valley, but I'd wish they'd Stop sticking 75F on things that never birthed there.
It's a personal touch, and at worst, some light spirited fun while respecting the history of the preserved sheds and their codes. TWW carried 75F, and as it's preserved with locomotives still 'based' there, it causes no harm. Swanage have done similar with 71B on occasion.
Moaner.
