So cool to see your 1 year review. Your initial video inspired me to order a custom Ryker AT. I ordered it about 4 months ago and actually received it about 2 weeks ago. I've been wearing them trying to break them in going for walks around town, and wearing them doing yard work. My intent is to use these as a versatile work, hike, and hunting boot. I basically built it just like yours. I did got with a pull tab, but I am absolutely in love with it. Seems like the toe box is a tiny bit wider than my Nicks Robert boot, which is great! The Robert is kind of a go anywhere casual (and sometimes dressy) boot. This Ryker boot that is just like yours is definitely the go to the ends of the earth type of boot. I am in love with this thing.
Man that is so cool. If you are on instagram or Facebook please send photos at Gentleman's journey. I have my eye on that Robert boot over at Nicks as well. Thanks so much for coming back around the channel and I can't wait to see where yours end up taking you!
I have Franks type 1 commanders and a pair of the wedge ground pounder. Great boots. I did the custom fit and they really did a great job and the customer service was above and beyond.
Crazy how time flys! Really appreciate that feedback, keeps me going. I finally got loose from some busy work stuff at my business and can give this channel the attention it deserves.
I like these a lot (well, I would say the same to almost all your collection) and I see them as a casual boot, not a working boot (IMHO). Good stuff buddy!!!
I agree, It has the bones of a work boot but still has a bit of a casual ascetic to it for some a couple reasons. I randomly like to work in Cowboy boots for a lot of stuff. However, not that I have the smokejumpers from Whites, those may fill my work needs? Appreciate you watching!! Curious what boots you are wearing most in this season of life?
@@GentlemansJourneywell, it’s still quite warm here in southern Spain so I mainly wear flip flops. Fall is coming and finally I will have the opportunity to wear my Panama jack boots (it’s a Spanish brand that manufactures boots and I bought a “timberland” type of boots). And finally, next November I’ll travel to the Netherlands and will buy a pair of 1907!!
So I have a pair of patriots. Two days in and mine started peeling like yours. Just the right though. Turns out that’s a relatively common thing with PNW boots, maybe they didn’t put enough glue, or we sweat just enough to peel it up. Either way, I slapped some shoe goo from Walmart in there real heavy like, let it dry for 3 days and haven’t had it peel back up. So that’s always an option too. Good looking boot man. Keep it up.
Great video I’ve watched a lot of your videos. I find them very informative. I do alot of research before I buy anything and that’s how I found your videos. I was looking into purchasing a pair of Franks Patriots and learned a lot from your videos and went ahead and ordered a pair. It took 34 days to build from the time I ordered them to the day I received them. I’ve been wearing them daily sometimes all day other days for a few hours. They are pretty much on their way to be broken in which brings me to my question to you. Did you find the Ryker canvass easier to break in than the 7-8 ounce leather the other boots are built with? I would assume they would be but wanted to get your opinion on it after 1 year review. Also, I wish Franks would offer a desert tan canvass for the Rykers as I think that color would be very popular especially for military guys. Anyways, keep up the good work.
Cheers brother and thanks for the comment. I appreciate hearing people watch what I put out. It actually takes a ton of hours on most videos. It seems like you faired pretty well in that you got those pretty quick. I love the Patriot boot, on my list for the future. I found this to break in a bit easier than my Nicks, but not as easy as my Whites. I also have a high pain tolerance and am usually so busy that it has to really hurt to get my attention. Not a boast, just how it is. I agree with you that the desert tan could look really good with several leather combinations. I plan to see the folks over at Franks later this year and will bring that up. Cheers brother and catch ya in the next video.
I was really surprised with the boot you went for. Like you had all kinds of options and the one you pick. I would never pick that boot! I have the Frank's Front Range coming in this week.
I usually get 11 E in my Frank's boots but i got the Rainier boot in 11.5 E and the arch is perfect a little bit roomy but im loving them a few weeks in. Sometimes it seems like the the 11E boot feels good but the arch is to far back towards my heel.
Yeah, I had six inch tall logger boots before and it wasn't a huge issue for casual use, but they were terrible for warehouse use, of course, and they still felt like I was almost rolling my ankle a lot not so much because of the shorter height as the narrower heel with less stability, so I don't know if I will buy many more logger heel ones, but getting used to the tall heel stack wasn't so much the problem but the extra leather was less shock absorbing maybe. Like I said, HORRIBLE for warehouse, etc.
I bought a patriot boot (it's still being built) and I followed their guide for sizing online, what they say is one full size down from brannock and one width size up, and I called them up and told them I wanted to put a 3mm thick foam insole and asked if it would change sizing, and they told me to size up once in width, so I ordered my boot in EE width, I hope that the insole fills it up, if it doesn't they have a 5mm and a 7mm thick insole. Also my question is do you think the sizing will be right?
Hey man, First thanks for watching the video!! From everything you are saying I think it sounds like the recipe for a good fit because you went to that EE width. Curious what style build you went with? Send some pics on instagram or Facebook to Gentleman's Journey when it gets to you. Pumped for you!
@@GentlemansJourney Patriot in walnut all smooth and with a composite toe. I can't wait to get it, I'll get them sometime between thanksgiving and Dec 14th based off the 12-16 week estimation on their Patriot ST page.
Yup I agree, sounds like the stitching issue is fixed in their end. I hope to see Franks this year so I’ll bring to the sole peeling and see where that goes. Thanks for watching! 🥾🥾

👍👍
My Nicks and Whites both did that, they told me it’s sweat. I just put some contact cement on it and that’s lasted for me.
Great video. I’m going to wear a pair of Ryker in the Stitchdown Patina Thunderdome
That’s awesome man!! Good to hear from ya.
I can see how that’s not an ideal shop boot but I would sure love to have that for a deer lease boot.
Now we are talking, sounds like an adventure I'm down for!!

I love how Franks uses properly sized heel counters.

Yeah, canvas is pretty durable. I usually prefer canvas pants to denim ones, especially in summer, but obviously not as thick as denim or leather.
Yeah, I don't know how you would actually NOTICE breathability except for like when a breeze goes through a shirt on a warm day and such.
[there are different weights of canvas, too, just like about any fabric]

I think rawhide laces are hit-miss. I have one pair that they broke in a spot already the first time.
Yes, I will likely try the honey sole. Don't know you really need to condition the roughout part, though.

At the price point of these boots it’s unfortunate to see the canvas stitching issue and inside sole peeling
Yup I agree, sounds like the stitching issue is fixed in their end. I hope to see Franks this year so I’ll bring to the sole peeling and see where that goes. Thanks for watching! 🥾🥾
Is this a high Arch boot
Yes it is! 🥾🥾
As a former Marine, build that boot with a tan/desert canvas and then consider me a customer.
Sounds like a good idea to me!!
They would definitely build that. Call them...
Just fyi if you want your false tongue to be rough out, just flip it over
Yup, thanks! Have a great Christmas season.
I think your design was fine you just need two pair of Ryker AT boots!
Solid point!!
Kill-tie or killtie lol
