    What do you think is the most useful stat in baseball?

      I see this video is almost a year and a half old and you did a good job. I was a fantasy baseball and football commissioner for many years but haven't been involved in sports for the last 9 years or so. I am also a vet and decided to take up other hobbies for a while. Now that I am getting back into sports and am restarting some of the old fantasy leagues and dusting off some of my friends, I see that sabermetrics has become rather popular, even on Sportscenter, etc.. I remember that WAR and a couple of other stats were creeping into the leagues when I took a break but they seem to be rather mainstream now. The WAR stat does absolutely nothing for me as far as an important stat goes, it seems to be nothing more than a tier group that most people that followed closely already knew in which category a player ranked. I did like the "scrub" comment with a sub 1 WAR, lol. The wOBA stat is also something that doesn't seem to be a huge asset if you are familiar with BA, OBP, Slugging, etc., but the FIP is an excellent stat. Like you said, if the defense isn't great or if a coach calls for an intentional walk, etc. it shouldn't count against the pitchers stats. Thanks for the tip on using ERA numbers as a guide to FIP. Good job on the video. Thanks. 👍

    I love sabermetrics/analytics. I think it paints a better picture of players' worth.

    Thanks a lot. I find a lot of different statistics that seem similar to each other. I guess my other question would be how does FIP differ from DIPS ERA?

    I am very old school. I look at it this way: 1. Can he hit? 2. Can he run? 3. Does he have power? 4. Does he drive in runs. Basic information and I think using that simple basic info is good enough.

      the eye test doesn’t really work these numbers are the only correct way to evaluate players

      As a fan that way of thinking is fine. If you are a general manager and thinking like that then you have failed your organization.

    So for the batting runs component of wOBA, do you use RC (runs created)?

    • @TomTalksSports
      @TomTalksSports  2 года назад

      You're close! Just have it a bit backwards. wOBA is a component of the weighted runs created (wRC), which is a version of Runs Created (RC) that you mentioned. A great resource to learn more about wOBA and other sabermetrics is fangraphs. If you look up wOBA on google and click on the "wOBA Sabermetrics Library" search result it'll answer any questions you have about wOBA!

    If your WAR is positive, I wouldn't call you a scrub. Scrubs are replacement-level guys - folks at zero or below.

      Just because something is too complicated for you to understand does not make it nonsense.
