Yup. Remember the lines "We provide what is missing" and "I once was blind but now I can see". He could never understand how a man (his father) who seemingly had it all would choose to end his life. He was blinded to the reasoning behind his father's action and not knowing was making him bitter and shut off from other people (primarily his Brother and ex-wife). The game was designed to push him to rock bottom creating a mental state of total despair (killing his own Brother). By freely choosing to kill himself (as his father did) he gained the understanding of how his father could do what he did and that will in turn free his mind and allow him to reconnect with people.
I loved this movie. I used to watch it with my dad when I was a kid. I still think it's such a good movie. Trigger warning: My dad unalived himself when I was 17 in my bathtub. I held his hand waiting for an ambulance while he died. This experience wouldn't help the trauma at all. Like not even a little. It would push me way over the edge at the end. In the process of healing I've met other people with similar experiences that this wouldnt be helpful to either. I think the perspective of losing it all to become grateful for it all and enjoy it makes sense. Strip him of all the things that fueled his ego to help the perspective. The seeing why his dad did what he did tho Idk. The reason he jumped was vastly different as well which I don't think would lead him to understanding what his dad did.
David Fincher's "The Game" remains an underappreciated and highly misunderstood masterpiece. A lot of people who watch this movie get hung up on how improbable its events are, but those harping on suspension of disbelief are not only hypocrites (they've almost definitely made larger, dumber leaps for much worse movies), but while they're pointlessly counting "cinema sins", they're completely missing the brilliance of the film. The entire point of "the game" is to strip Nicholas of the wealth and position that were socially isolating him. He needed to be left, a broken husk of a man in a foreign country, to force him to give up his father's watch and the emotional burden it represents. The game isn't just a plot device. It's about having humanity and excitement re-injected into a miserable prick's life. It's an intervention. A total rebirth. It's like a modern version of A Christmas Carol, but with the holiday setting discarded. Nicholas Van Orton stands in as our 1990's Ebeneezer Scrooge and Michael Douglas absolutely nails the role. This movie has an amazing script, an excellent score, brilliant cinematography and incredible performances top to bottom. As far as I'm concerned, it's as good as mystery thrillers get.
A terrific reaction to a great film. I'm very pleased you enjoyed this suggestion as much as you did. Your apprehension at the beginning of the film was obvious but it didn't take long to recognize you were fully sucked into the experience just as I was when I first watched this movie. Have always loved this movie. Some critics thought it was too unbelievable that CRS would go to the lengths it did, but I felt they were missing the point. He had to believe - TRULY believe - that he had lost everything he thought mattered (his money, his home, his career and so on) to make him see what really did matter in his life. He showed resolve throughout the entire film to find out what was going on, but never truly broke until he believed he had killed his brother. And from that point on, he began looking at life through a different lens.
I get the point of the movie and thank God it's just a movie because if my brother or sister did this to me, I would tell them, "You think I was an a**h*** before?! You ain't seen nothing yet!". 😅 .
My attempt to answer your question, "What if he had jumped from one of the other corners of the building?" I guess the writers have an image about psychology like the old Newtonian worldview [as taught in schools in the 70s]. Some kind of B.F. Skinner plus classical Pavlovian conditioning in the mix.
