Re: kit, we made the portable kick thing ourselves. It's just an old leather suitcase form eBay. We reinforced it with wood and then used a floor tom kick conversion kit to attach the kick pedal and keep it steady. [www.drumshack.co.uk/pearl-floor-tom-jungle-kit-adapter-jg-16/p/1202]
We then stuck an Audix D6 inside with a wireless transmitter but to be honest any dynamic kick mic would work.
We then blend the sound of the suitcase with some gated 50Hz sine wave goodness.
