    BI without question. PU needs to be bigger, louder, and come out in front of the plate. "That's Interference!" and point over the top at batter when the BI happens; play ends; now walk out in front of the plate, big "TIME!" call and mechanic; turn towards the batter, point bigly, "THAT'S INTEFERENCE!" "BATTER is OUT!" with strong out mechanic; turn back towards 2B, point at runner "You! Return to First!" and point at 1B; repeat as needed.

    So very interesting! At first glance (maybe 5th?) there does not seem to be any batter interference, except exactly at the the :40 mark where the batter clearly interferes with the catcher, because the catcher takes his throw and the batter's foot is in the way (the catcher was hindered in making the throw). As an umpire, I'm not sure I would have caught that as except for the foot, the batter didn't interfere, IMO. But the foot is enough to hinder the catcher, good call blue!

    cleaning the plate: whoever this is, please, stop cleaning the plate with your butt pointed at 3B. be square to the front of the plate.

      I was taught that the plate umpire should call time and clean the dirt off home facing the catcher/backstop. It minimizes the number of people who have to endure seeing the plate umpire’s hind end in the air.

    other notes to the plate umpire whom I will address as "you":
    0:20 - I'd like to see you down, completely locked in and set before the ball is coming out of the pitcher's hand. for this stance, it's ok to stay hands-on-knees like that until the pitcher comes set, but once he comes set get to your final position and lock in; still moving as the pitch is released is a recipe for not being set while tracking the pitch which brings us to...
    0:22 - still settling as the pitch comes in, and then head movement as the pitch moves off the outside corner. if you can't see that corner, it's because you're too far from the catcher and not up into the slot enough. get into the slot, get set sooner and stay still. now I will turn my head if a catcher lunges way out to catch a pitch, to see that he catches it (or not), but it sure as heck isn't even close to a strike if I do.
    0:23 - put some pop and snap on that called strike mechanic. come up crisply, and snap that hand out strongly. omni-directional mic or not, I ought to hear that verbal strike call.

      It's mentioned that there's a field (base) umpire. They should be making the out call on the play at first after the uncaught 3rd K...not the plate umpire.

    what is the league rule for the batter walking away? I am not sure all other areas of the states but in high school and batter can walk up to the dugout, not enter it, and turn and run to first.

      NFHS and Little League give the batter until they leave the playing field time to run to 1st here, but I believe (may be wrong) MLB and NCAA give the batter until he leaves the dirt circle.

    Seems like the catcher came out of his stance and stepped forward before receiving the ball placing himself over the plate. I'm not sure that makes any difference, but I would not have called batter interference.

    Great call on the interference.
    In regards to the dropped 3rd, unless you are playing NFHS, the OBR rule is "batter's circle". There is no batter's circle. If I were umpiring on this field, I'd tell the coaches at plate meeting that we are playing NFHS rules for uncaught 3rd...you aren't out until you enter the dugout. It removes all sorts of confusion and anger that can occur from the peanut gallery.

    I'd have to brush up on the specifics of dropped third strike there by league, but I think the end result was the correct one, since you had abandonment (kid walked away, although I acknowledge that part's often a judgement call...) and then they made the throw to first to complete the put out. It looks like the ump should have made a standard strike indication instead of the out signal prior to the "safe" that indicates (basically) a live ball and to play on, but otherwise seems correct. So a few notes for the plate ump, but overall better than I would have handled it, probably. (oh, and a check swing for a third strike the catcher drops is even more of a mess...)

    • @jstr9569
      @jstr9569 Год назад

      ya, I'd call abandonment in this case since batter walks the other direction out of the box ( out of the picture). Most of these kids at bat don't even know what's going on and walk away on a drop3rd with 2 outs and then require the parents or coaches to yell "Run!" ... stupid rule at this age (10u), no one learns anything. As well, the Catcher should have just followed and tagged the batter headed for the dugout for good measure, but I understand he was probably upset he didn't get a chance at the lead runner because maybe he thought he was interfered with.

    For the called third strike, most of 9u-12u in tournaments use straight OBR, with some modifications (no head first slides, for example). So, in OBR, that's why you have the white circle around the home plate, or in most cases, just grass, but still a circle. I am not a huge believer in that the 'batter gave himself up'. The reason? As a fellow human being, how can you ever know the intent of another person? Lol. But with a dirt area like this, I think it's reasonable to call the batter out once he strays too far.. again, based on the rule set (National Federation of High School Rules being wayyyyyy different).
