Tom and Jerry at MGM - music performed live by the John Wilson Orchestra - 2013 BBC Proms

- A medley of the well-known energetic music by composer Scott Bradley from the 1940's and 1950's Tom and Jerry cartoons. Wonderfully performed live by the John Wilson Orchestra at the 2013 BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall in London. Arranged by Peter Morris and John Wilson.
Pete Morris, who worked on the arrangement with John Wilson, on 4 September wrote the following in response to questions about this video: "we wanted to create a score that wasn't too fragmented and that didn't rely on visuals so the music you hear is a compilation of some of the best bits of Scott Bradley's music. There is no single video for the music - it comes from eight different cartoons: Smitten Kitten, Sufferin' Cats, The Framed Cat, Cat Fishin' Just Ducky, Jerry and Jumbo, The Cat Comes to Dinner and Mouse for Sale".
On 8 september Pete Morris added: "John is a dab hand at reconstructing scores from audio. Check his Wiki page for info. In this case, however, we used score fragments, archives and a lot of patience. I used FCP to extract candidate snippets of video and linked them to create a 3 candidate narratives which John and I then worked on. Copyright is a nightmare (MGM, Warner, Sony, Turner, EMI have all owned bits in the past) - only JW has the clout to cut though that quagmire. Scores are as rare as hens' teeth."
On 16 September Pete added: "Bradley's original scores were played by typically 20 to 25 musos. In fact, if you look at the beginning of the performance there are only 3 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello and 1 bass, to start with the original MGM sound. However, more instruments are added as the piece progresses to the full 100-piece orchestra at the end. Scott Bradley also preferred orchestral sound effects to ones added by the sound department, hence the big "shock chords" that you find at various places".
*Now I realize how badly I underestimated the work put into the creation of Tom & Jerry.*
Yeah they were true masterpiece 😍 and Tom and Jerry will never be forgotten from our heart 💓
That is why making the episodes of the Golden Years was so expensive...
Thats why it will always be remembered
They were some of the most expensive things ever produced minute for minute, and it shows! So much talent, so much effort, so much perfection!
@@yashbingo2283 I think Tom and Jerry will be the cartoon that would be remember for many generations after us
For a lot of young people, now of a certain age, these classic cartoons were their first exposure to classical and real orchestral musics.
I became a concert pianist thanks to Tom & Jerry.
@ Really!!??:-O
I mean there is samurai jack season 5 and primal
Ok boome...
Wait he's right
My son became a classical musician because of Tom and Jerry.

You can tell this was a piece composed for children.
It's so exciting and seems to perfectly embody the chaotic happiness and small worries of a child
Excellent stuff
Not really. One of the creators, Joe Barbera, said that Tom and Jerry was usually released in theaters late at night, targeted at a largely adult audience
Not really, it wasn't composed specifically for children, it was just meant to be lighthearted, whimsical and energetic to match the tone of the cartoon. But there are also moments of quiet and sadness too.
@@shogun2215
That didn’t mean kids who grew up in the 1990’s watching them on Cartoon Network couldn’t enjoy them. I was born in September of 1992 and can positively attest to my statement.
A lot of Tom and Jerry music was popular music of the time. Jack the Bellboy from Sat night Puss, Milkman keep those bottles quiet from I'm just wild about Jerry... etc.
It's not meant to embody the happiness and worries of a child, it's meant to allow Tom and Jerry to Mickey Mouse along to the music.
If you close your eyes you can easily imagine an episode

Me too !

@@canalrandom7912 that was well... Random indeed.🤔😑
That’s a very strange way of looking at it as though you couldn’t find any other real insult to modern cartoons hahahaha
@just me Gumball? We Bare Bears? Regular Show? Steven Universe? Not all the modern cartoons are bad dude.
Well even the new Tom & Jerry Show and Looney Tunes are pretty good.

It is just like a common piece which is hard

The original MGM staff musicians who played this stuff could sight read anything and they would knock out a few cartoons in the morning and then do movie soundtracks in the afternoon. Maybe one rehearsal, if that, before cutting the track. Astonishing. The Warner Brothers staff musicians were incredible too. What a time to be a musician.
Top tier musicians indeed.
Things aren't much different today. Thanks to John Williams and his first Wagnerian cinematic scores of the later 1970s, large orchestras have been doing film scores (again) for decades (after that modernist break in the 60s and 70s).
Today's session musicians of Hollywood are quite like the ones you describe. They may not be knocking out cartoon scores every day anymore (those are all done electronically these days), but virtually all of the big (as well as not so big) budget films engage a proper orchestra, which uses these astonishing sight-reading session musicians who record on sight, without a single rehearsal. Even some TV shows employ orchestras ("Orville", the Sci-Fi brainchild of Seth McFarlane, has a full orchestra that records the soundtrack to every episode -- a condition that McFarlane insisted on before they even started shooting the pilot).

The music is incredibly complex, the rhythms and the colors... I had never noticed it before.
***** " made by various kinds of instruments ". Listening and looking are different senses, and here you've got this piece of art " showed " by its various instruments.
We've got to listen and understand music. You can " show " any piece in your mind, saying " yep that's a piano, okay that's a sax ", then you'll learn about different kinds of instruments, and how it sounds for each one :-)
***** Complex means it's full of many interconnected parts :)
Guilherme Eddino now imagine only having a few chances to play it like this -- that's what happens when they recorded music for this show! Best of the best.

It was good music when I saw the cartoons, but now, while I am seeing an orchestra playing it, I realise how much effort was put in it. The music is so bizarre and unlogic at certain places.. And still it all makes sense.. Amazing, truly amazing.

BlacksmithVRS Well said!
Funny life story. When I was like 13 years old, I was at a candy store for my brother’s 7th birthday. I was standing in line with mom and one of her friends, until suddenly, I hear the roar of Tanner the MGM Lion and the Tom and Jerry theme song playing in the building. I looked around to see where it came from. I found that there was a kids area that has a TV playing their cartoons. Needless to say, I dashed to that area to watch.
I’m 24, now, and I would do that again. You’re never too old for Tom and Jerry!
Had to be a Mad Genius who composed this..!
Scott Bradley
Joseph Hanouna
This is one of the few examples of having the original version of a cartoon being absolutely perfect, the slapstick, the humor and the weird but cool way tom & jerry don't always talk. But nowadays, you don't get that same reaction eith the "newer version" and BTW in my opinion Toms yell is ss equivalent and as funny as the cartoon version of the wilhelm scream.
as i grow older; never laugh to the slapstick, but this Tom & Jerry absurdity is gold...
It truly is the perfect slapstick comedy, every hit was a blast from the original classic.
Nowadays, kids won't get this marvelous, masterpiece cartoon
Tears comes after watch this 😢

-"piano, as usual"
-"just going on with the saxophone"

And screming

and bark
And play with bubble wrap
As a child I never thought much of the soundtrack but now, being 24 with lots of musical background, coming back to this....this style of soundtrack was so good, I wish cartoons still had this sort of music

I don't think you understand the meaning of "underrated." Overrated is something or someone who you think doesn't deserve the credit they or it receives, while UNDERrated means someone or something deserves MORE credit than what they or it currently has. So in essence, the guy above is stating that Scott Bradley deserves more fame, being he is a great composer and conductor, considering that he's not very well known in that field of music.
Precisely.
To think, he wrote all the music for Tom and Jerry and then 50 years later set up Postmodern Jukebox on RUclips!

This must be actually pretty difficult to play. Lots of sudden changes in rhytm and style... I never realized that Tom and Jerry’s music is actually so sophisticated.
Very difficult I imagine
@Kagereneko without a doubt!
@Kagereneko You have that backwards. The sound comes first, then the animation is plotted to fit the music and the dialogue on a bar sheet. Also, the score is never recorded all at once as performed here. It is recorded a short section at a time. What the orchestra does here is incredible (performing the entire score at once).
The older cartoons had a great appreciation for complex, classical style composition, hence why you hear so much classical music in MGM and Warner Bros cartoons.
It is incredibly virtuousic music. Make no mistake about that!
Shoutouts to the percussionists. They really brought out the soul of classic Tom & Jerry. The snoring part was hilarious 🤣
