I started eating a tin of sardines every day for lunch and the weight has started to fall off. I never thought of using them for weight loss, but I am seeing results. A tin of sardines is surprisingly filling and nutricious (and delicious). In the country where I live they come packed in olive oil, and that's fine. I remember being in the US and seeing them packed in mustard or tomato sauce, I would like to try them someday. Sardines and anchovies are plentiful fresh local fish and many restaurants serve them fried and I will try them soon. I also see them on sale fresh at the fish market but don't have the courage to attempt to clean and cook them. Thanks for the recommendation.
Dr. Boz is an MD and knows her stuff. You can question her or try her advice. Personally, I have tried IF and "dirty" keto but have simply lost and regained the same 4 pounds for months. This week I've tried her "sardine" fast and have found it relatively easy. I began Monday at 1p with a can or sardines and here I am, Saturday at 9am after 116 HOURS and the only thing I've had are 5 cans of sardines throughout the week. MUCH easier than I anticipated and I'm down 11 pounds. Sure part of this is water but I know my body has made a huge shift as my ketones are at their highest (2.2) that I've ever measured. Give it a try! (Hint: I drain the oil from the can and replace it with higher quality evoo and mct oil. I also add a sprinkle of Old Bay and about 1/2 tsp of horseradish. Yum!)
@@julieellis6793 Great question! (I hope I'm not stepping on Dr Boz's toes but here's my understanding.) Part of the point of eating sardines is: 1) to have a balanced ratio of protein to fat (for instance canned tuna or salmon have too much protein vs fat) and 2) fat is satiating - it will help "fill you up" even though there isn't much. The medical/health industry did us all a great disservice telling us all these years (decades!) that low fat is good. When you cut out the fat, you have to replace it with something and that something is often carbohydrates. While water certainly isn't a carb, draining the oil from sardines to replace it with water will 1) make the sardines taste more 'fishy" and 2) won't leave you as satisfied/full, causing you to become hungry again sooner. Hope that helps!
Thank you Dr Boz. I have just recently found your channel and watching some of the older videos. I’m grateful for this one as you mention that ‘food addiction’ is real. Most medical doctors or teams don’t understand this. I am interested in learning more about this way of eating.
▬ Should I stop adding powder-cheese on my sardines, whip-cream in my coffee and added butter? Or is it ok? ▬ Can I add Butter or better Bacon grease or Beef tallow?

Did the 72 hour water fast each week for 6 weeks when your new book came out. I had great results. I must say I was white knuckling through the whole fasting process. I wanted to try the water fast again but just could not face it. I think the Sardine fast might be the key for me. Thank you Dr. Boz.
you overdid it. 3 days every week for 6 weeks is not sustainable. too much of a good thing is a bad thing. 3 days of water fast 4 times a year is enough.
I'm on 56 hrs sardine fast and my ketones are 0.4. Im wondering how much fasting and sardine fasting I will need to do to become insulin sensitive. I am on a ketogenic diet. Just proteins and vegetables and fat. Edit:on 66 hrs, I had a reading of 1.9. So happy After my water fast, 72 hrs, my reading was the same. Except that I felt awful on the water fast and better on the sardine fast.
if you are keto, you should already be insulin sensitive. but if your ketones are 0.4 then you are eating too many vegetables. or the wrong kind. go to straight carnivore. no need for veggies.
Dr Boz, do you think that doing the Sardine Diet on an Alternate Day Basis, 3 times per week (i.e. M, W, F), could be equally as beneficial, if the person follows Ketovore on their eating days? (Keto & Carnivore). TY!
If you have been suffering from insulin resistance for many years, fatty liver, fat belly, high cholesterol, you are not aware that you are not metabolically flexible enough to switch to ketosis very easily just because you are willing to water fast again and again. Thank you for showing that sardines during fasting actually primes the ketosis process for the next time. Thank you for pointing out MCT oil can also promote ketosis. I am so grateful for this truth Dr.Oz , I can fast for the rest of my life not just to reduce my weight but also my insulin resistance😅.😅. I am hoping reducing my insulin resistance can eventually reduce that LDL..
I just finished reading a book called The Great Cholesterol Myth by Jonny Bowden, PhD & Stephen Sinatra, MD. Cholesterol isn't the cause of heart disease. It's sugar, oxidation, insulin resistance, and processed foods. They do become an issue when we are insulin resistant and diabetic. We are here with Dr. Boz to fix the insulin resistance and lower the likelihood of a cardiac event. Back in the 70's, cholesterol could be in 350+ range and be OK. Read the book. It is very interesting! Good luck!
I love your information. I hate sardines. My A1C thankfully is 5.2 from 6.0 a year ago. I’m a figure competitor and a Chiropractor and I have always been lean. So the high A1C was a surprise to me since I’ve always been extraordinary lean. Around 12 % BF for most my days. Also my fasted insulin is always less than 3. I have many patients doing keto or at least low carb depending on their goals and blood work. Thank You for what you do. I know I want to start my own channel as well as share yours!
The wild planet no salt in water (not oil) whole sardines (head cut off, liver typically not present, unfortunately),…. are good,… they've got 'x-factor' for me.
If I add kimchi to sardines I can do this. Is there a minimum number of cans per day? I don't feel hungry but messed up ketone production. Is one meal per day of sardines good enough?
What kind of sardines do you get? I recently started having a tin with my packed lunches. Normally I eat 3 or 4 pickled eggs but needed something different. The taste is growing on me. Mustard or hot sauce helps.
Thank you Dr. Boz for the freebies, and looking forward to reading everything, going on the sardine fast and then the water fast. At that point I will make an appointment. God bless you, your family and your practice in fathomless measure.
One of the live questions asked if you can go into autophagy on the sardine fast. You can’t go into autpphagy on sardines as the mTOR pathway needs to switch off and AMPK needs to switch on to allow autophagy. This won’t happen while consuming proteins.
I am hoping Dr. Boz sees this question; would an egg fast be as beneficial as a sardine fast? I really like sardines, but to strictly eat sardines only for 3 days would make me not eat another sardine. Eggs, on the other hand, maybe more doable with the different ways to cook. There are a lot of info on RUclips regarding an egg fast. Just a thought…
Sorry all! but I need to understand. Is sardine fast Better Than a WATER Fast ? For how many days? I would like to do 7 days. So, need to decide about sardines or water. Need help!
Hi, I liked your analysis method today! I'm trying the sardines, but have not got any meters. Beginning every Sunday at noon, I will try it. Not a sick person, I'm looking for preventive maintenance.
Riga Gold smoked sardines are great, right out of the jar. A cheaper choice is Walmart sardines in oil. I take them and split , take backbone out , heat a tablespoon or two of butter in frying pan with some garlic salt. I think they are pretty good.
One thing is for sure when a person reaches autophagy they know it!!! Of course this is only my opinion but on my fourth day of fasting I was amazed at the energy and was tempted to fast another five days
The same thing happened to me, my first can and I got a DAY LONG burst of energy like nothing I have ever felt before in my entire life ! , I am assuming its because of either high as hell ketones or if the metabolism (and IR I assume as well) did a jump up or something, the selenium can boost thyroid stuff as well... One of the most interesting things I have done on my keto journey. I now mix them with avocado mayo for a mock "tuna salad".
Water Fast! the term water fast Always confused me literally that would mean fast from water. Whenever I fast and most people do they drink lots of water. Sardines are great but eating any thing will keep you from autophagy.

I needed to hear this. One year keto, carbs under 10g, high fat protein, lost 72 lbs and lowered A1c from 9.5 to 5.1. Triglycerides from 1386 to 200. Still too high and have another 40 lbs to lose. However I have been OMAD mostly last 6 months and losing zero wt, BG seldom under 100. I cannot afford a meter that measures ketones but have my glucomter. Still going to try the sardine fast as 36 hr fasts seem to have little effect.

Dear Dr. Boz, I thought that autophagy was about restricting proteins to under 16 grams while fasting and carbs under 20 grams. I'm confused about how eating sardines can keep someone in autophagy because of all the protein intake. Isn't it true that we want the body to eat its own protein? Anyway... I'm learning and I've learned soooo much from you! Thank you for all your hard work and your videos!
@Poire Tartin I wasn't following Longo's mimicking fast, but rather I did a 72 hour water and coffee fast and got my GKI down to 0.9 to 1.1 then after 72 hours I switched to fat only for 4 more days and kept my numbers 1.1 to 1.5. But i didn't take any protein. I was confused about taking the protein in the sardines. If that works I'd much rather do that.
Recently discovered your channel and slowly working my way through them all - great stuff!!! Thank you for taking the time and effort to make and upload all your videos. Question about cans of sardines. Every can of any brand of sardines in olive oil or water seems to contain 0g of trans fats. I know that means there is less than 10% per serving size but it’s still odd and also worrying to see it labeled. The ingredients list says “fish, olive oil” or “fish, water” - so where is the trans fats coming from? This is also the same for any brand of cans of salmon. I’m very disconcerted about this - does anyone have an answer why, or perhaps a theory??

I will be having a bilateral mastectomy in 9 days. I plan on trying sardines (not a fast at this time). Any advice going into surgery and post surgery. I have lost 32 pounds since May on Keto.
At about the 52:00 mark Dr. Boz addresses what to do the other four days and I want to make sure I'm understanding. It seems like she's saying basically do sort of a one meal a day for those 4 days. Am I hearing her correctly? {I lost 45 lb doing OMAD for 8+ months. Then lived in Germany for 9 months while learning about ALTERNATE DAY FASTING, which I only started this past April and did successfully. I did 148 hour fast as a test and it was fairly easy.} I understand the fast (timer) literally starts with the first can of sardines consumed. My question (and I'll go back and listen to other videos also) is:: after that, do I only eat the sardines when I'm hungry?
I have been Ketovore for over 2 yrs, my weight has stabilized with this. But...glucose stays above 100 and low ketones (breath testing). Got a Keto mojo and started sardine challenge BS now in the 80's after 24 hours and ketones 2.2 after 24 hours. Not hungry and feeling good. Had been on metformin many years. So must have been very insulin resistant. Thank you so much. PS I will be 76 in March and am 5ft 2inches.
I just did the Sardine Challenge. I liked the Sardine Challenge because I slept better during the challenge. However, I haven't done well after the challenge. First, the morning afte (which was today) I woke up at 3:00 am, BP normal but my glucose was 124, which iI don't usually have. I will admit that I'm concerned about metabolism because of high insulin, and fasting glucose of 94 to 104. The biggest problem is that if I don't eat my usual foods for three days, when I go back to eating, boom, terrible reactions, which is what happened today. So, not sure. I like the Sardine Challenge because I have food allergies and I don't have a problem with sardines. Who knows? I could lose weight. I have done water fasts, but the hyper reactions to food after a water fast is about the same.

When you fast your body consumes weak and diseaqsed cells first! That is why God so commands us to fast! 72 hrs is NOT enough! I've cured several cronic ills I had by fasting for over 30 days!
Why would your body break down muscle tissue for energy if you still have lots of body fat available? I have listened to quite a few of Dr. Jason Fung’s lectures, and he says your body is very smart and will not break down muscles for energy if fat is available.

i have eaten 3 days only the sardines . day 1 and two i had around 1 to 1.5 ketones day3 was 2.5. now im water fastin in the 30. hour and my ketones are around 4. blood sugar 70 ketones 4.edit: after 48 hours of fasting i broke my fast with 5 eggs 2 pieces of dark chocolate and a hand full of pistacios. 2 hours after breaking my fast i measured glucose (72) and ketones (round about 6).
i feel amazing and im not hungry at all because im eating my bodys fat, which i have a lot of. best wishes from germany.
I didn't think pistachios and dark chocale would be fast breaking meal and still have good numbers! I be eating bone broth and eggs cours I go for long fasts. Usually not too short but I didn't think about the fasts we do naturally everyday.

I just can't see how eating a can of sardines every day would cause you to lose weight. Am I missing something?
Yum!)
@@adamstewart4368thank you. Would using sardines in water work as well?
Also, do you eat a regular dinner or fast during that time?
▬ Should I stop adding powder-cheese on my sardines,
whip-cream in my coffee and added butter? Or is it ok?
▬ Can I add Butter or better Bacon grease or Beef tallow?
Depends upon where you’re at
Eventually that’s important .. but timing for that reduction is important
WOW.... I really appreciated you covering this topic in detail. I am one of those detail people with learning especially medical learning where I can easily get obsessed with all the minute details, cause and effect and projected success and Recovery.

Im wondering how much fasting and sardine fasting I will need to do to become insulin sensitive. I am on a ketogenic diet. Just proteins and vegetables and fat.
Edit:on 66 hrs, I had a reading of 1.9.
So happy
After my water fast, 72 hrs, my reading was the same. Except that I felt awful on the water fast and better on the sardine fast.
Yay!
AWESOME!!! They shot up fast. Nice.
Thanks for sharing 😊
if you are keto, you should already be insulin sensitive. but if your ketones are 0.4 then you are eating too many vegetables. or the wrong kind. go to straight carnivore. no need for veggies.
You did?
Good luck!
Good stuff!! Common sense, no fads, consistent data.
@@bonsummers2657 Do you add extra evoo? I ordered this case from amazon. Claims 8g of fat but doesn't feel fatty.
I'm glad you get to fill your cup. If you don't fill up, you have nothing to give.❤
This is why it would be better to do a straight fat fast.
@Poire Tartin I think sardines or any keto diet are a great way to prime your body before doing a water fast.
Maybe raw eggs.
@@njsongwriter , how about poached, or soft/hard boiled?
I eat three or four raw egg yolks a day and cook the whites in a little butter to kill the avidin.
Maybe eggs scrambled in a liberal amount of MCT oil (highly ketogenic).
I've over consumed eggs. Stay close to a toilet.

Water fast or sardine fast?

I read that the two best brands for sardines are King Oscar and Crown Prince. The Brisling sardines are with skin and bones.
