I totally agree, Jerry is a huge force and immense talent, but lest we forget Matt Cameron. Even in his 60s he still managed to play drums for both soundgarden and pearl jam on tour at the same time. That's a powerhouse.

Amen and amen! 🙏 When I think about him and his own demons, the skydiving incident years ago where his shoot almost didn't open, plus other self destructive paths that he once trod, I'm so very thankful he is still with us. Not only because of the music, but because of who he is as a person: solid, humorous, grounded, loyal, and definitely someone I WISH were in my sphere of friends to just chew the fat with for hours....

Jerry has always enjoyed playing with William, that’s why he’s in the band. William and his band opened for Jerry in 01/02 and then they’d pull double duty and play as Jerry’s band for his set. Years down the line when they thought about reforming the band Jerry suggested William and then he came in and the band played together and Sean and mike agreed he was the one. 15 years later they’re all still kickin ass and get along great, fantastic chemistry between Jerry/Will which is so incredibly important for a band like AIC. So happy the band is still around and they brought in William all those years ago, great decision.
Layne will never be replaced. But damn, William is the double threat.. great front man and guitar back up for Jerry. Just killer.
I can’t believe how old this is. I still regularly listen to this and think of it as the new stuff. I’m the one getting old.
Duvall is an EXCELLENT ADDITION to Alice in Chains. He has played a huge underated roll in keeping the spirit of AIC alive and well despite tragedy(s)
I have loved William from minute one in this band. He harmonizes with Jerry in a way that still makes Jerry sound like Alice in Chains. His participation has afforded us three more AIC albums.

Took me awhile to come around to William at first but wow, AIC is still great and he is a talented singer!

Considering Jerry is the "manager" of the group and is the driving force and also considering 2 of his band members basically died from an overdose, I think he wants serious commitment from then on and duval seems like a decent member that isn't gonna party too hard if you know what I mean

Could not agree more. I wish I had half his talent. The older I get the more I appreciate guys like him and the more I feel like I have done absolutely nothing of meaning in my life outside of raising two fine young men along with being a good husband (I think) to my wife. The ability to write and play music is just a talent that I don't have and one I would give a lot to acquire.

Man they harmonize really well together. I'm so used to Layne and Jerry still. This is different from that, but its also just as good. They really play well together. Stoked that AIC found such a genuine talent.

It's apparent some cope in ways to make themselves feel better by putting down someone else about their demons. Man they sound phenomenal. Layne will always be sorely missed, but I'm sure he would be looking down and smiling at this.

Thank you William for taking the spot left vacant by the great Layne Staley. Giving us new AIC albums for many years to come. He took the front man spot humbly and harmonizes with Jerry as well as anyone other than Layne could have. His talent on the guitar adds a little something else to the unmistakable AIC sound!
They are just incredible together. I mean, it will never be what Layne and Jerry sounded like, but William is an amazing singer. I'm really glad they found him
Im one of Staley's biggest fans, he saved my life through his music and inspired me to become a musician myself - but some of you people need to give it (and him) a rest. Good on Jerry and the rest for carrying on and making great music that only further serves to honor the memory of Layne. Without them, his death would have continued to be ignored by the music world in general. They're carrying on his legacy. And much love and respect to William. Them's some big shoes to fill. He's awesome.
I played Takamine for years...when it comes to acoustic guitars I don't want my hands on anything other than Guild...beatuiful instruments and craftsmanship.
Love how they flawlessly switch over the lead and rhythm parts before/during/after the main solo.
at 2:25 their guitars are in amazing harmony.

I always liked AIC, but lately as Im getting older Im realizing theyre a much better band the I even thought they were, way to keep the sound alive, and as much as i loved Layne, Duvall is damn good too.
I hear ya, I heard them before their first album came out. I’m like meh they’re alright and wow have they stepped up their game over the years. I heard them open for great white in Spokane Washington in 88? Or 89.. wild to think how long ago that was now.
Unplugged versions are often the finest form.
We need a new MTV Unplugged, but with this AiC and their new songs.
This genre of music lends itself to the acoustic format really, really well.

Alice in chains are not only the greatest grunge band in history,they are one of the greatest bands,look at there back catalogue of musical styles and directions they have taken,they made Jar of flies which was up there with any Led zep song,songs like Man in the box and rooster solidified there claim on the grunge genre,they can own an acoustic set,as well as selling out an arena,and they play fucking awesome live.
Probably my favorite song since William came into the band!! I'm 45yo and been a fan since the very beginning!!! Layne will NEVER be replaced, but this song is so AWESOME!!!
This came out when my nephew committed suicide. It’s about his decision to me, he was only 23. Great vocals here and Jerry is second to none.

Totally agree with you. Everyone knows that no one can replace Layne. I mean, no one can replace anyone for that matter haha. The dude's a great vocalist and guitarist and also seems very humble. Amazing musician for sure and Jerry seems to enjoy his presence in the band as well.
Good to see people accept William and allow the band to keep on doing what they (and I myself) love so much.
I for one as much as I respect Layne (I grew up with them) I like this incarnation of the band better.

***** A band is a group of people, and its sound is a combination of those people. So yeah, while Layne was a HUGE part of the original AIC sound, he wasn't the whole thing... it was always four guys. Layne was one of the four guys. I like the new sound. It doesn't move me in the same way as Dirt or Jar of Flies but it's still really good. Phantom Limb is the coolest metal song I've heard in years.

I have...many times, usually when I hear something like the song performed here by Jerry Cantrell and William DuVall. Thanks for the video, Guild! (I'm a proud owner of one, by the way. These videos are great, because they not only showcase how perfect these guitars sound, but they capture the beauty of the souls who play them through the music they make. As someone who loved the original lineup it’s taken me many years to open myself up to listening to non Layne songs but I gotta say this is a tune.
This acoustic version is so awesome. Jerry is amazing, as always, as songwriter, guitarist and vocalist.

Jerry Cantrell deserves to be considered "One in a Billion"...he is the only musician part of a huge band, who managed to keep the longevity, authenticity and the beauty of it even after the frontman died...the quality of the songs he made after Layne's death is the same as the quality of the songs he did with Layne...tell me another band that has kept this consistence...and don't forget Duvall, he also deserves everybody's respect, he managed to find his place in this band, without having to be the Layne's replacer, he is unique also..so RESPECT TO THIS BAND FOREVER
Jerry is one of the best songwriter ever, god tier musician and an absolute legend. AIC and whatever Jerry writes will continue to kick ass for as long as he’s doing it, a true genius.

Such a great performance on beautiful instruments. William is just gold to the band...he can sing AND play guitar, opening new possibilities to arrange guitar parts in songs. Also check out his solo album One Alone. I saw him perform live in a tiny club in Berlin, Germany last year...only he and his voice, two acoustic Gibsons, a mic and a bit of reverb here and there, and the small audience was riveted. Awsome performer and a great musician.

William Duvall stepped in knowing people would hate him for not being Layne Staley. He's not trying to be Layne. He's trying to be William. Jerry gave it time and he so talented in his own right. I love Alice In Chains. The Layne years were absolutely amazing. I'm glad I got to see them. Their music fills my soul. Alice In Chains with William are pretty great. Hope to see them when they tour again.

I’m not sure id say it’s the best but it’s really really fuckin good and can hold its own against any AIC record. Completely blows my mind how people hate on this band and call them a cover band now even when they release incredible albums like this one and sound great live too. Those people who won’t give the Duvall era stuff a real chance are fuckin idiots and I’ll never trust them when it comes to music. BGWTB is one of the best albums of the last 2 decades, some of their best songs ever on that record too, TDPDH kicks ass too and rainier fog is very solid as well. Long live AIC

I hadn't yet caught this particular take and version as a harmonizing duet and had honestly never checked out Billy D banging out some licks while in unison. Just holding and emphasizing such a magnificent Diatonic pitch and even getting a chuckle out of Jerry on the finish of the second last chorus`s final line of the verse with his kutzpah. Billy is the Shit fo sho and wish I had picked up on just how much so way earlier. But better late than never,right? Thus Spent a few repeats on take and grabbed one of my 6 stringed acoustics and realized I hadnt down tuned, especially a half step to start in E flat in forever. Felt so natural and strumming out the final product after a quick tap through in harmonic scale to then thrusted out that classic solid sustaining E major after just tuned to ensure the pitch and intonation was perfect....I then realized I was now on a higher plane of existence known as Uncle Jerry`s 5th Dimension of Acoustic Bliss. Hadnt a guitar in the house in a couple years until recently despite a house load of studio gear. My head is still spinning. But as I continued to absorb and repeat the scaled rhythm.That drop to D and shift to C in proper is key and the hook that catches. I embarked on arranging to add a third being me to this tune while relearning it all over again. Splitting it into segments so all 3 had our own and also coinciding parts.. Billy and I are pretty darn rad just off each other imho not just with Jerry ;)
I don't care what anyone says, William is a huge factor in saving Alice in Chains by filling huge shoes left by Layne. He sings the older stuff his own way and it sounds as awesome as all his originals he does with AiC. 'Black Gives way to Blue' is one of my favourite AiC albums. Unreal.
