    My heating went out 2 days ago. I got it repaired today. The cost? $806.00 I am so glad that I keep a hefty emergency fund so I can write the checks when needed and not go into debt. Two months ago I had $800.00 in fence repairs. Same thing; I write out a check. When I was younger with no budget or much of a savings account, these kinds of repairs would have knocked me flat and did....often. And I was always broke living paycheck-to-paycheck. Having a budget is key, but so is saving money for life's lighting strikes. You just have to do it.

      @pnwflipper2089 Месяц назад +2

      Yes, but if you think about it heat systems and fences are not really lightning strikes. Anyone who owns a house should have a fund for repairs. I’m glad you got ahead of it!

      Glad you got some proper money! We all need that. And if 800 is a drop in the hat, how much do u have saved as an emergency fund btw? I am thinking 50k would be a solid FU savings so if anything comes up and or you loose your job and dont want to work for a good 1/2 a year, that would be perfect amount and then some wiggle rooms too

    Five tips to stay under budget:
    1) Add item to the cart and wait
    2) Keep an intentional list of your needs.
    3) Make sure you have money set aside in the budget.
    4) check your motivation- why are you buying this item?
    5) Create friction.

    Easy, I never shop on line EVER. Put item on list. Eventually will get around to purchasing. I only purchase in store for cash. Know what that is called? Discipline. Parents don't teach that anymore.

    As an etsy seller I'm seeing smaller orders this year. I've stopped myself from buying all be things I see by making a list of who I need to buy for and what I bought, and keeping it on my phone. I put where it is stored, bc I buy through out the year to not hurt us so much in the winter months. I have lost things before, especially when we moved.
    ♡ Best of luck everyone!!

    • @carolyncook6970
      @carolyncook6970 Месяц назад +1

      I have a piece of paper for each family member. I write everything I’ve got for them, like you, where it can be found in house, then that item on paper gets a W by it when wrapped and under tree!!😂😂

    • @rachaelt3294
      @rachaelt3294 Месяц назад

      @carolyncook6970 That is perfect! Very organized and you won't forget anything that way.
      The downside to buying all year is just finding things after a move. We are just now getting things from storage after 3 years!! My daughter has outgrown barbies and mini toys so I can't gift her anything from the 2 totes I found. Lol I'm selling them on mercari and getting her a few different things she actually wants. I decided a couple small items and stockings are all we are doing this year. Then we are setting aside money for one day of fun at a theme park or something of that sort. We don't go on vacations, we never have, so a day of fun is like a vacation to my children. We go for a walk in the woods and make smores on the campfire in the back yard. Lol
      Since we are having our smallest Christmas ever this year I only have 6 people to buy for so it makes it easy.

    • @robertwalker5521
      @robertwalker5521 Месяц назад

      Replace gifts with a Christmas card that contains a hand-written, heart-felt personal message .
      'chances are it will be be kept, appreciated
      and thought about at times - during the year .

    • @rachaelt3294
      @rachaelt3294 Месяц назад

      @robertwalker5521 not for my non immediate family members. They aren't getting anything this year. Times are tough so I'm only buying for my immediate family of 6. I usually give a small gift and a few soaps from my shop but I just can't do it this year. We all agree. Maybe next year will be better.
      I'm hoping by Valentines and Easter things turn around and sales pick back up. ♡

    Great video but I wouldn't add the purchase to the cart because you can get emails and targeted ads for it. I keep a note of stuff I want on impulse and revisit it - no cookies involved.

    Some of us are spending more money because the cost of food has risen so high, and we are spending more on health care as we age. Some of us are pre-paying for our cremation ahead of time $5,000 just for one person's cremation. I have a 2012 Subaru and in the past three years I've put in 1) $3000 for an engine rebuild (This vehicle only had 98,000 miles on it so figured it was worth repairing during COVID when used cars were impossible to find) 2) $250.00 for a new battery 3) $1,600 for new rotors and brakes as well as an oil change 4) $1,000 for new tires.. money out, money out, money out!! In the past 6 years we needed a new furnace, new water heater, new a/c unit and new kitchen appliances.....

    Cancelling Prime was incredibly "surprising" to us as we now in hindsight see how much we did and did not buy on a whim. It was too easy to think "I would be nice to have this" and then someone tosses it on your porch tomorrow. Now we put things in the cart and when we hit the free shipping threshold, we often take it back out of the cart because a few days later, we didn't really need it that much any way.

    Can't go wrong being honest about your wants versus your needs.
    Do I want or need to pay for cable?
    Not as much as I want to save that money.
    I said this to myself $18,000 dollars in cable tv savings ago.
    I asked that question about a lot of things I used to spend money on which has put me in a position to be 100% debt free by 4/17/25 or sooner.

    As someone who struggled for years with underspending, these strategies seem to work. I now purchase on impulse, don't budget, make it as easy as possible to buy online, and use a credit card for everything. That's helped me reduce my savings rate from 60% to 30% and have a more balanced, happy life.

    2:44, which is why I have my always-on microphone on my phone turned off I don't use smarthome products at home (Alexa, Hey Google, RING), and I use adblockers so Google and other ad companies don't know what I'm constantly talking about so they can then in turn personalize me ads and try to entice me with that product on my screens every time. And that one click pay I've never done, I always still want that threshold so I'm sure I want to buy it yes or no. It shouldn't be too easy.

    I don’t know how everybody is having so many problems. I own my own house. I paid 50% of it off in four years no car payment going to retire early and 51 years old. Been saving 15% for almost 30 years. And I only make 70,000 a year and I’m just perfectly fine.

      It’s marketing. They are sponsored by businesses that they support and approve. They aren’t making anyone spend money but they are giving you info on something if you have room in the budget to pay for that then you now know about it. At least they’re not supporting other companies that are cut throat and don’t care about their consumers. I appreciate their marketing 🤷🏼‍♀️
