Nobuo stated that when writing this song, he would write two to four scores a day until he had about thirty, and after deciding on the first two to start the song, rearranged the remaining until they fit together in a jigsaw kind of way. Which leads to the song having that sporadic feeling of uneasiness.

I'm glad you were able to listen to this and break it down! This was one of the first ever video game songs I learned on piano and posted on RUclips (different account, although I think I reposted it on here as a #tbt) when I was just a high school sophomore in '05. Honestly, I remember for most of the 2000's that this song sat up there as one of the most recognizable video game songs outside of the Mario/Zelda themes. Everyone knew OWA. Everyone loved OWA. Everyone talked about OWA. It's been... a long time since we had a song as well-known and liked as that (arguably Megalovania, although it seems the general internet more likes it for memes than actual compositional brilliance). I know it was mentioned that the lead guitar and cymbals ride over the mix, but that might've been slight overcompensation when this was first made. I remember the original orchestral version (not the one from the actual FFVII, but an orchestral version later on) was basically this exact version minus the rock instruments and that rock-esque interlude in the middle. When the sequel movie (FFVII: Advent Children) came out in... I believe it was 2006, it was just the same exact orchestral part with the rock instruments added on top. It's possible that to accentuate this change, they might've gone slightly overboard when it come to the mixing to make the new instruments stand out over the original song. Your Mileage May Vary, but I actually prefer the original version without the shredding guitars and loud drumset. You can really hear the interplay and counterpoint in the orchestra that got drowned out in this version and the intricate harmonies/voicings in the winds/strings, plus the timpani and snare in the original really do well to both accent rhythms and provide some harmonic context. (Timpani gets used like a percussive bassline with the double bass, similar to using a piano to double the bass guitar in jazz, to really punch out the chords. Uematsu's genius writing of the original sadly does get overshadowed by the wailing, face-melting guitar, which some do prefer but isn't quite my cup of tea.) But, man... no matter how critical I am of this (or the original version) or how many other VG songs I eventually turn to and love (and are arguably superior from a technical standpoint), this one will always hold a place for me as a piece of my childhood. It will... never be a memory.
Growing up with Nobuo Uematsu as a kid writing most of the FF music really does a number on your musical standards ! him and the final fantasy music people are insane
This track is actually from the movie Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. Smash Bros is just using that track. It's not actually from Smash Bros. BTW. Have you played FFVII? FFVII & FF in general has some of the best game OST ever, if not the best! Would love if you dived deeper!
FF7AC OST and a Pikmin song are the only songs in Smash from a film (be it movie, short, series, or advert). No I’m not counting Tetris as they build so much on the original folk songs AND those FF7AC and Pikmin tracks aren’t even remixes for Smash, just the same original track.
You should give One-Winged Angel Rebirth from the Remake a try. it's a 10min orchestral spectacle and one of the most impressive video game ost's i've heard!
There's a live performance of this that really knocks it out of the park -- this original version seems so fast, but the live version is a tad slower and has some real oomph to it
really recommend both the original version and the version from final fantasy 7 remake; it's so good. also love that you picked up the stravinsky influence right at the beginning!
So the original composer of this track is Nobuo Uematsu, a name you'll see come up very often if you start going through like the top Final Fantasy tracks. The man is objectively one of the greatest composers of our time, a master of the craft.
The original One Winged Angel piece from the game Final Fantasy VII was arranged as a fully orchestral piece. It didn't have the rock guitar and drums. This version is a remix from the movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which is a sequel to the game. One Winged Angel has been remixed more than once, as it and the game are the most popular in the Final Fantasy series, so Square Enix have always taken the opportunity to revisit it.
Nobuo Uematsu will lead you down the rabbit hole of some of the greatest music on the planet(in my opinion) so I hope you discover tons thank you for the breakdowns.
Stravenski and Jimmy Hendrix's Purple Haze. Also, the mix is muddy because this version was originally for film, so it was most likely mixed down for smash. Also the music from the Disgeae series is amazing!
Personal notes 0:23 Stravinsky (upbeat militaristic and imposing tone set) 0:36 Windwinds and Brass used as transitional devices, with seamlessness 1:06 Wonderful long phrase w/ the Muted trumpets, clarinets/flutes (windwinds)… malo percussion, dynamic use of chords, perfect transition,..de crescendo, guitar players and lead trumpets lead the way, with exceptional support.
I love your appreciation of the song but more so how you are breaking down the enticing parts. Im very passionate about music and love hearing someone explain what im hearing and why it works so well. Love the channel so far :)
I'm sure since this video is a year old and this is fairly well known that you likely already know or the comment was already made. However, the composer, Uematsu, did an interview on how he came up with One-Winged Angel. According to Uematsu, he actually composed each individual piece separately and did a sort of puzzle like thing where he put the pieces together like some Frankenstein's monster kind of deal to see what would sound best and ended up creating one of the most well known pieces in video game history and then proceeded to never do that again. Its amazing
this song was used in the game but is actually a song for a movie Final Fantasy advent children! thats why you have a lot of different set ups in the song like everything is saying different emotions cuz the scene was crazy!
It’s interesting you mentioned that the section at around 8:15 felt different because that is the section which was sandwiched in the middle of two parts of the original version
As others have said, the composer is the master Nobuo Uematsu. He is regarded as one of the best composers of the Final Fantasy franchise and not only that, but gaming in general. Even tho I'm not sure if Final Fantasy VII was the 1st one who did it, it definitely has the most memorable boss fight music WITH LYRICS. I think no other videogame had clear lyrics before. To put into context: you have (kind of) fought with Sephirot during the entire game, so the final boss you have to go trough 2 phases and when you think it's done, the screen goes entire to black then, suddendly, One Winged Angel (not this version, the OG version) starts to sound, screen goes to bright white and Sephirot appear in his safer form, straight to heaven to earth. It's really something the 1st time you experience that battle and how difficult it can be/over the top. There's another piece that I like even more than One Winged Angel and it's Dancing Mad. It last 16 minutes of barroco/classical type of music and, as Jeremy Jahns said about that piece in particular "For a musician, the SNES sound engine is like an artist using Crayola crayons. Nobuo Uematsu used Crayola crayons to paint the Sistine Chaps"
Dancing Mad is truly a master piece. No surprise he proceeded to make the epic One Winged Angel. Any other master pieces you think even come close to rivaling those 2 pieces?
@@rafael502 I rarelly hate a game but FF13 brings out the worst parts of myself. Having said that, 13 has one of the best OST of the entire franchise. Maybe there isn't a particular piece that rivals both OWA/DM but personally, Saber's Edge is fucking amazing and it's done in such a good way cuz you feel the urgency from the music alone. I love the new song from 7R, Hollow. It's not as epic as those BUT I love power balads and the lyrics is clearly about what Cloud feels about Aerith. Also, Nobuo wrote it :D From other games, from MGS it has to be The best is Yet to come. Such an out of place song when you hear it... until you finish the game and it clicks!
not scrolling through all the comments, someone probably said it, there's lots of changes basically like movements and in short intervals and the like. In a lot of games certain sections will repeat to a point and then in a new boss phase a new movement will play. It might not make a lot of sense as a standalone to have so much happen in one song, but it's what it represents.
The composer is Nobuo Uematsu, this is his band The Black Mages. They have some wicked songs from the Final Fantasy series, you might wanna check them out.
There's also the original version of the song and several orchestral remakes and remasters of the song (no guitar). But no matter what version you listen to, it's all great. It's an iconic piece fit for a legendary character~
I just wanna say that i heard this first time waaay back in 2005, watching it with my highschool friends. Our jaws collectively dropped. One: sephiroth appeared for that final fight with cloud. Two: THIS SOUNDTRACK Aerial, superpowered swordfight with this music playing in the back. N this was 2005, so the CGI for that time was nothing short of mindblowing.
not me out on a random ass youtube adventure. Found another content creator reacting to the OG version and I search for "Winged Angel React" and here's my old buddy DRT reacting to the BEST version. TSAN homie checking in. Uematsu-sama also is FULLY self taught. Dropped out of school, the whole nine. Composed MOST of the Final Fantasy soundtracks through most of my life. What a track. Good to see you again, my guy!
The "tango" is also intentional. As this is the penultimate final battle between the protagonist and the antagonist in the "final" chapter of the FFVII series (which later gets built up in the "sequel" of "remake" in 2020)
Ha! Hey man, hope all is well. That's wild. I saw someone the other day that looked like you and I was like "Slevin!!??" RUclips adventures are fun, glad you ended up on the video
This tune may as well be the Imperial March of video gaming. It's no doubt one of the most recognizable and beloved villain themes in gaming and immediately identifiable with Sephiroth to anyone who knows the name.
There are so many versions of this piece now lol. If you were more into the orchestral side, it might be worth listening to an orchestral version of it… The original one used the PS1 sound chip or MIDI of some sort, but there are full orchestral versions from various games that reused the track, or simply from live concerts. There are other great versions from other Final Fantasy 7 games too.
Just to reiterate a what people have said here, the black mages version, which was this one, is great when put in context with the movie Advent Children. That middle section where the guitar solo and the riffs are at add to sephiroth talking smack to cloud etc etc. The original version which is just the orchestra and choir, that's some next level stuff 👌
I always love One Winged Angel. The original piece comes from boss BGM in FFVII, before being remixed for Advent Children movie, which is this one. They don't do much modification (maybe none?) when they added it to Smash Bros., probably because it's already perfect to begin with.
The part that you said the song was building anticipation and the part where you said you were the most impressed, those two segments actually were composed together in the original song, One Winged Angel. The heavy metal was incorporated into this song as the style of the movie was a bit edgy and the original characters were always kind of edgy anyways. But I always loved how the orchestra was building so much suspense, then a lone flute breaks that suspension with a little melodic line. I prefer the OG, but I appreciate this version too, for what it’s worth.
Purely for your own time fun - altho if you can work in a react to it too ! :D - the scene from Advent Children this takes place over is utterly, utterly, insane. Fits the music perfectly.
As many people pointed out - pleeeease also listen to the original from Final Fantasy VII and from the remake Final Fantasy VII rebirth. I'd love to see a reaction to that as well. Great stuff, keep it up!
I think you should hear the version from the remake of FF7, One winged Angel Rebirth. An amazing, relentless version of this song that I think does an amazing job of paying Homage to the original with its own madhouse vibes.
Have you check Airbuster Theme from FF VII Remake. That is my most fav piece from FF series, after Jenova : Advent Children Version (which share the same origin as this one)
Very telling that what you liked less is the stuff they added to the original one winged angel from ffvii. Look for the version in Nobuo Uematsu's channel (he's the composer), the distant worlds one is pretty good. This one is ok and fits advent children, but I like the orchestral better. Or for a metal version, the one the black mages did (now that I think about it, I think it's the same you heard, but I don't remember it sounding so busy. Nostalgia, maybe?)
I love how the only part you thought was mid, was the part added for that version for the Advent Children movie. You thoroughly enjoyed pretty much all of the original version (first half and last part). Honestly you're right, this rearrangement has some indesirable new elements that were added to it.
Since you liked One-Winged Angel, you should definitely give "Chaotic Guardian" and "Caius' Theme" from Final Fantasy XIII-2. There's also "Liberi Fatali" which is the first theme from Final Fantasy 8 and was also composed by Nobuo Uematsu.
Would love to see you react to other Nobuo Uematsu tracks. He's a self taught musician and composer who wrote all the parts of the original one winged Angel
Maybe I’m making connections where non exist however is the choir meant to have a resemblance to church music? The sound of them just reminded me of being in church and hearing the choir singing in Latin. Also by a story perspective this would make sense as it could be a reference to Sephiroth’s god-like power.
One-Winged Angel is SO good, but I would really love you to react to the One winged angel Orchestrated version from FF7 Remake, that one, is a masterpiece
So, the original piece was made for the old video game called Final Fantasy 7, the song is called the same, One Winged Angel, the creator for this one is called Nobuo Uematsu. This was the version for the movie called Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, as someone pointed out already (in the comment section). Nobuo Uematsu also had a hand in this version, but rather than making the piece for a game, he had to write it for a movie. A remake of the Final Fantasy 7 was made a few years ago. The version we got from the remake is called One Winged Angel: Rebirth. Nobuo Uematsu, the original creator at least had a good hand in remaking this masterpiece, which he had made a few of according to me at least, that he has made. This track is actually from the movie Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. Smash Bros is just using that track. It's not actually from Smash Bros. BTW. Have you played FFVII? FFVII & FF in general has some of the best game OST ever, if not the best! Would love if you dived deeper!
Oh.... well that would have been good to know. LMAO.... oh well
FF7AC OST and a Pikmin song are the only songs in Smash from a film (be it movie, short, series, or advert).
No I’m not counting Tetris as they build so much on the original folk songs AND those FF7AC and Pikmin tracks aren’t even remixes for Smash, just the same original track.
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Yeah, the original song if from FF7 and this version is from the movie. Anyway it's a great version
😱 "I'm ready for Despair" The new Remake version of the song titled One Winged Angel Rebirth is also an amazing listen
Oh were doing FFVII now? You gotta check out the airbuster theme from FFVII REMAKE
I second this!
Third
You should give One-Winged Angel Rebirth from the Remake a try. it's a 10min orchestral spectacle and one of the most impressive video game ost's i've heard!
There's a live performance of this that really knocks it out of the park -- this original version seems so fast, but the live version is a tad slower and has some real oomph to it
really recommend both the original version and the version from final fantasy 7 remake; it's so good. also love that you picked up the stravinsky influence right at the beginning!
The most iconic final boss theme
I can imagine you fall asleep playing the final boss in final fantasy 7. The music is like a lullaby for you
So the original composer of this track is Nobuo Uematsu, a name you'll see come up very often if you start going through like the top Final Fantasy tracks.
One Winged Angel has been remixed more than once, as it and the game are the most popular in the Final Fantasy series, so Square Enix have always taken the opportunity to revisit it.
i life in germany and there was an orchestra concert from the final fantasy composers and singers. it was a blast.
For context, very heavy, dark, and powerful theme for a godlike character
Happy you quickly noticed the reference to Rite of Spring.
The original is a genius piece of music, IMO. But this version is awesome as well.
I agree, listening to the original is a must.
Damn you finally reacted to the theme of the equivalent of Darth Vador in the video game industry ! Nice !
Nobuo Uematsu will lead you down the rabbit hole of some of the greatest music on the planet(in my opinion) so I hope you discover tons thank you for the breakdowns.
This REALLY reminds me of a lot of FMA soundtrack, really awesome music & analysis! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you much!
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Here is detail on how this song was formed,ruclips.net/video/9BzkrgVivk4/видео.html
the original One Winged Angel is all orchestral btw, this one is a Metal Version made for the movie.
Just a quick fact though
It's actually from animated movie "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children".
Stravenski and Jimmy Hendrix's Purple Haze. Also, the mix is muddy because this version was originally for film, so it was most likely mixed down for smash. Also the music from the Disgeae series is amazing!
Petition for tony to react to every one winged angel
Personal notes
0:23 Stravinsky (upbeat militaristic and imposing tone set)
0:36 Windwinds and Brass used as transitional devices, with seamlessness
1:06 Wonderful long phrase w/ the Muted trumpets, clarinets/flutes (windwinds)…
malo percussion, dynamic use of chords, perfect transition,..de crescendo,
guitar players and lead trumpets lead the way, with exceptional support.
best song of a villain in videogames.
I would say this Ganondorf's, Dracula's and Bowser's
I love your appreciation of the song but more so how you are breaking down the enticing parts. Im very passionate about music and love hearing someone explain what im hearing and why it works so well. Love the channel so far :)
got a good laugh about the lead guitarist and trumpet comment. haha so true
Nobua Uematsu is a Legend composer from the company Square-Enix. He's mostly retired nowadays, but still does projects here and there on the side.
Also, Nobuo wrote it :D
From other games, from MGS it has to be The best is Yet to come.
Honestly Tony you could probably do a few months on just Final Fantasy music. There's SO many good tracks to go over.
Two: THIS SOUNDTRACK
Aerial, superpowered swordfight with this music playing in the back.
You nailed it with Stravinsky. He was one of Nobuo Uematsu’s inspirations for this piece.
This tune may as well be the Imperial March of video gaming. It's no doubt one of the most recognizable and beloved villain themes in gaming and immediately identifiable with Sephiroth to anyone who knows the name.
I imported the original multi disc soundtrack from Japan in middle school. Takes me back.
I love this track, probably my favorite version of this song. I always love to see people enjoy it for the first time!
They don't do much modification (maybe none?) when they added it to Smash Bros., probably because it's already perfect to begin with.
it does have those "Rite of Spring" vibes for sure
If you dig the orchestral parts more, you NEED to listen to Liberi Fatali from Final Fantasy VIII.
Watching this performed live by an orchestra is pretty amazing, just saying
final fantasy has some absolutely fantastic music
I’ve been waiting for this 😭
Have you check Airbuster Theme from FF VII Remake. That is my most fav piece from FF series, after Jenova : Advent Children Version (which share the same origin as this one)
There is a full orchestral version of this (without the guitar solo and stuff.) But yeah, this was made for a movie.
There's a full orchestral version for the FF7 remake. One Winged Angel Rebirth.
The version of this song from Final Fantasy 7 Remake, One-Winged Angel: Rebirth is one of the most technically complex tracks I've ever heard.
Nobuo Uematsu is an absolute god for giving us this masterpiece
I love how the only part you thought was mid, was the part added for that version for the Advent Children movie. You thoroughly enjoyed pretty much all of the original version (first half and last part). Honestly you're right, this rearrangement has some indesirable new elements that were added to it.
One winged angel is the ultimate boss music, and no one can suggest me otherwise.
I was actually bummed that it wasn't the original.
Now for the original song, there are many versions of this song the weight of this song is incredible.
I feel like, after this, Tony needs to hear Dancing Mad.
Would love to see you react to other Nobuo Uematsu tracks. He's a self taught musician and composer who wrote all the parts of the original one winged Angel
Good catch on Stravinsky influence!
Maybe I’m making connections where non exist however is the choir meant to have a resemblance to church music? The sound of them just reminded me of being in church and hearing the choir singing in Latin. Also by a story perspective this would make sense as it could be a reference to Sephiroth’s god-like power.
Nice,FFVII ost.Cant wait for Neo:The World End With You or Kingdom Heart
One-Winged Angel is SO good, but I would really love you to react to the One winged angel Orchestrated version from FF7 Remake, that one, is a masterpiece
Nobuo Uematsu did the One Winged Angel for the movie Advent Children, and this sounds to be the exact same piece.
Nobuo Uematsu he did all the music for the original FFVII
Super fun reaction btw, I have been following your reactions for a while now. Would easily like to see you react to the ost for the remake called J-E-N-O-V-A, another great piece from Nobuo Uematsu. The version from the remake is called J-E-N-O-V-A - Quickening
The old Jenova is one of my favorite songs from a game ever and when that iconic tune finally hits in the remake. Pow.
Advent Children's OST hits hard
this is a very different version from the original, but still very good. I hope you end up covering more Final Fantasy tracks. They have some of the best music in any game I've played
